Tattoo ink and Stumptown Coffee

BOBBLE TIKI: SUPERNOVA AND SATELLITE HAVE REASON TO CELEBRATE >>>Tiki Photo 10:30

Bobble Tiki loves him a good cup of coffee. Admittedly, Bobble Tiki has never really been amused when people use the phrase “loves him a …” but in the case of coffee, Bobble Tiki’s willing to let even the most annoying of vernaculars slide.

Bobble Tiki’s a quad shot kind of guy. He has been since the beginning. Good coffee helps Bobble Tiki make it through the day, and good coffee helps Bobble Tiki have the motivation to drag his groggy, boxed wine soaked Tiki head out of bed every morning.

When it comes to coffee in Tacoma, few if any do it better than Satellite Coffee on Division near Wright Park. Part of a group of hip local businesses that also includes Supernova Hair and Tattoo, Satellite Coffee will celebrate its one year birthday this Saturday, Nov. 1. At the very same time Supernova will celebrate what owner Pat Brown calls a “grand reopening.” Since the people behind both businesses are close friends, and they all work together as a team, Supernova and Satellite will party together for the celebration, inviting Bob Wayne, along with Eddie Spaghetti and Ron Heathman of the Supersuckers (Heathman’s a co-owner of Satellite, and Brown plays with Bob Wayne) to dish out some rock, while the masses are invited to check out upgrades made to Supernova and drink free French press coffee from upstairs.

Brilliant.

It’s a matter of life and death

ANGELA JOSSY: DIA DE LOS MUERTOS >>>

Death is as mysterious as it is inevitable, but it’s also a part of life. This is the essence of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration â€" to honor and celebrate the lives of people who have passed on before us.

There are four Dia de los Muertos celebrations I know of happening in Tacoma, and they won’t be anywhere near as morbid as I imagined. Two Vaults Gallery and Mad Hat Tea Company have Day of the Dead art shows hanging in their cribs. Tacoma Art Museum's big Dia de los Muertos party begins tomorrow at noon. The Sixth Avenue Procession kicks off tomorrow at 6 p.m. from Masa restaurant on Sixth Avenue.

Read all the details here.

Alexpalooza

MATT DRISCOLL: WORTHY SHOW, WORTHY CAUSE TONIGHT AT HK >>>11c1f012aZZZZZZZZZ8as0541f4e3e7381061

I’ve said it before, and undoubtedly and unfortunately, I’ll say it again.

Sometimes really shitty stuff happens to undeserving people. It’s the cruel way of the world. As long as there is humanity there’ll be pain, grief and people stricken by unforgiving sickness.

But the good thing about humanity is â€" we have the power to fight through the crap. If we didn’t, we would have all given up a long time ago. As long as there have been people dealt crummy hands by life, there’ve been people fighting the odds.

Early this year Alex Macomber got sick. He was 17 at the time. According to his mom, Melissa, Alex just started to feel off his game â€" and the problem only got worse. He was tired, and average, everyday things became taxing. No one knew what was wrong â€" even doctors.

Eventually, though, the doctors found out. Alex Macomber â€" who’s a guitarist and music fanaticâ€"had a rare form of cancer. He now spends most of his time at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center undergoing hardcore treatment. According to his mom, there are only 21 diagnosed cases of the type of lymphoma Alex has.

It’s a bummer, but Alex fights on. And his friends, family and even some around town who don’t even know him are doing what they can to support him.

An example of that support can be found in tonight’s show at Hell’s Kitchen, called “Alexpalooza” and featuring the Drug Purse, Mercy Pirates, Silver and Paris Spleen. The night will be both a monetary and moral benefit for Alex Macomber, organized by friends of the family â€" specifically the locally well-known Julia Harms and Rick King of Guitar Maniacs.

King helped put the impressive musical lineup together.

“It’s the kind of bands you think are kind of hardcore, but you find out they’re all softies,” says King of enlisting bands from around town to help with Alexpalooza. “It’s just such a bad scenario. The show won’t really help much, really, with the expenses, but it’s a gesture.”

“We love both of them,” says Alex’s mom, Melissa, of King and Harms â€" who played a huge role in setting Alexpalooza up, and who King classifies as “a super angry chick with a really big heart.”

“We’re just hoping Alex is well enough to make it to the show,” says his mom, bringing home the graveness of the situation.

So is Tacoma. Support a good bill and a show for a great cause tonight at Hell’s Kitchen.

The return of Tab

TONY ENGELHART: BENOIT BRINGS HIS SMOKIN' GUITAR BACK TO T-TOWN >>>M_37eb79caaf833e69cb9f408c195dffab

I have written about Tab Benoit more times than I can remember, but I always seem to find something new to say about the Louisiana bluesman. Armed with a classic Fender, Benoit rivals guitar greats like Eric Clapton with a deep understanding of classic blues.  His whiskey soaked vocals are as rough as sandpaper, which adds to his authenticity. But the story doesn’t stop with blues for Benoit as he also flirts with real New Orleans Cajun music and classic country. Swamp blues is a little grittier than Chicago or Memphis blues, and like Kenny Neal, Benoit is well versed in the music of his hometown. Since 1992, the guitar slinging Benoit has been releasing great music on both Vanguard and Telarc. His latest, Night Train to Nashville, was recorded live â€" where Benoit is at his best.

Tonight, you're in luck. Benoit will be live at Jazzbones in Tacoma.

Well-Rounded night

SUZY STUMP: MUSICIANS, PAINTERS, POETS ON ONE STAGE >>>

Seems like everybody’s doing a little politicking these days, and there are more people with something to say than ways to get it out. Well, my guess the folks involved in tonight's Tacoma Artists In The Round No. 4 won't just staring at their own navels either.

Come down to Club SOTA tonight for music by Barton Carroll, Star Anna and Motopony; poetry by Luke Smeraldo and Rajnii Eddins; and live painting by Rebecca Mantyla and Asia Tail. The always-provocative Tacoma In The Round series will no doubt touch on Tuesday's election through lyrics, words or paint. The evening starts at 8 with an $8 cover.

Trevalyan tonight

TONY ENGLEHART: JUNKYARD JANE'S SOFTER SIDE AT THE SPAR >>>L_291d528c18d414b66e95209b1b81c45c

After 15 years and still going strong with the incomparable Billy Stoops, Leanne Trevalyan and Junkyard Jane remains one of the most original bands in the Northwest and beyond. Trevalyan’s washboard playing adds an aura of the band’s unique style of swampabilly blues. Over the years, Stoops and Trevalyan have each started various side projects to, in her words “keep them from driving each other nuts.” While he enjoys a heavy rock sound by way of his band, Billy Roy Danger & the Rectifiers, she leans toward the acoustic singer/songwriter genre by way of her project Trevalyan Triangle. For this venture, she swaps in her washboard for an acoustic guitar. With Barbra Blue on bass, the duo experiments with a sound that mixes pop, folk, rock and just a hint of Americana. Once in a while they welcome a third member by way of drummer Chris Leighton or guitar virtuoso Mark Riley.

Tonight, Trevalyan will play the Spar in Tacoma. Show starts at 7 p.m.

Sean Culver is a communist

MATT DRISCOLL: BUT HE BOOKS WORTHY SHOWS AT JAZZBONES >>>L_d4e668fd0fcd40529393b325fe1248cf

This week I was swamped. I'm no horn tooter, but with Pappi Swarner drinking umbrella drinks in Maui and a cover story to write on Tuesday's historic election, I had a lot on my plate- to say the least. Sometimes, being the child of the '90s I am- when there's a lot on my plate I look to cut corners. That's why I had that "slacker" T-shirt. I meant it.

I guess you could call this week's column a cut corner.

There's not much easier way for a journalist to generate content than the e-mail interview. You just send questions off into the ether, and they magically come back answered. Then with a simple cut and paste you've got a column.

Thank you very much.

There's also not much crazier a fellow in Tacoma than Jazzbones' Sean Culver. If you know Jazzbones, you know Culver- probably because he's gotten drunk and talked your ear off about communism or bummed a ride to his mom's house from you. He's been working his way up the Jazzbones food chain, and after starting as the guy tasked with effeminately answering the phone, Culver now is in charge of all Jazzbones booking duties.

If there's one guy in Tacoma worthy of the e-mail interview, it's Sean Culver.

Luckily, tonight at Jazzbones there's a show worth talking about. Tacoma's favorite little barefooted, singing, songwriting, dynamo Vicci Martinez- along with Katie Gray and Olivia De La Cruz- will be laying it down at an early all-ages performance. Proceeds will go toward an unusual and worthy cause.

Read Sean's thoughts on tonight's show, his role at Jazzbones and his communist leanings in this week's Volcano by clicking here.
