Old school rock, new school hip-hop

Volcanoblastart VINTAGE ROCK
The Galaxies
While my dad, Little Bill Engelhart, was the first rocker in Tacoma, he certainly wasn’t the last to shape the sounds to come out the city. The Wailers and the Ventures also took R&B and blues and gave it a greasy garage makeover. Following the first wave of rock to be expedited from the rainy state, the floodgates were open and the Northwest sound grew in popularity because of bands such as The Sonics, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and the band performing tonight at the Temple Theatre, the Galaxies. â€" Tony Engelhert

HIP-HOP
Eprhyme
Olympia emcee Eprhyme will celebrate the debut of his new single this tonight at The Clipper. One half of Olympia hip-hop heavies Saints of Everyday Failures, Epryhme will offer a taste of his soon-to-debut solo album Waywordwonderwill with the release of a 7-inch. vinyl single, “Punklezmerap,” on Olympia’s legendary K Records.â€" Brad Allen

Saturday Spiff

Spiffredlineone3108 Love your jeans
Finding that perfect fitting jean is like finding your soul mate and its death till you part. To increase the life span of your beloved jeans there are a few things you can do.

Spiffredlinetwo3108 One nemesis is the torturous chamber within the washing machine. Doing laundry is rarely fun, so put it off more! The less you wash them the longer they survive. Turn them inside out, use regular liquid detergent, and the temperature no higher than warm. Stretch denim begs to be thrown in the dryer after almost every wear which decreases the elasticity. Instead, hang them for 45 minutes before tossing them into the dryer on high heat to finish. For rigid denim hanging is best so they keep your bodies original shape.

Hemming keeps them from getting destroyed and looks better. Wash and dry them (in the dryer) before taking them to get altered.

If a hole appears, don't wait for it to become to huge gash, fix it quick with an iron heat patch or drop them off to a tailor.

Fun, sexy jeans, like People's Liberation, can be found at Red Line on Sixth Avenue.

So love them right and Long Live your Jeans. â€" Alexandra DeLong

Glenna’s Clothing
Fashion reviewers called the style choices of most of the female nominees and attendees of this year’s Academy Awards safe. I call them boring. These broads have access to the most crazed and genius designers the world over who continuously turn out dazzling creations that flatter any figure, and yet, some of them actually picked brown as the color for their big walk on the red carpet.

Lame.

Interesting color choices were worn by actresses Nancy O'Dell, who managed to bring out the glitz in a grey, skin-skimming, décolletage-baring, lace-embellished dress, and Kelly Preston in a bust-enhancing, draped, fall leaf orange, strapless gown of Grecian influence. The only gown of real note was the flaming red, definite haute couture elegance designed by John Galliano. The silk taffeta worn by Heidi Klum held so much old Hollywood high drama that all other designs simply faded away. And while the intense red was carried well by Klum’s strong, mature beauty, young, fragile-looking Anne Hathaway seemed overwhelmed by the very crimson dress she wore. Follow Klum’s example. Get some va va voom â€" like the rest of these high-dollar earning ladies should have â€" at Glenna’s Clothing in downtown Tacoma. Glenna’s Broadway boutique shop specializes in stunning vintage couture, retro finds and gowns galore.

Don’t forget the shoes â€" rounded toe, pointy toe, open toe, sandal (no toe) â€" and accessories, sparkly jewelry, and divine hats to boot. â€" Jennifer Johnson

Volcano winner raps on politics

STEVE DUNKELBERGER: FORMER LOCAL RAPS FOR OBAMA>>>

Back when life was new and we were young, there was a lad named Steven Taylor taking to the stage at Olympia's Harlequin Productions and Capital Playhouse. He turned heads with his boyish charm and melted butter voice.

He was one of the first winners of the Weekly Volcano's utility player awards and later went on to play the role of Mufasa in "The Lion King" on Broadway for two years. See, that award opens doors.

Anyway, he's going to be in town this summer, now that he has landed the role of to  Dr. Frank'n'furter in Harlequin's "Rocky Horror Picture Show."

But until then you can get your Steven Taylor fix by jumping to his YouTube video about some dude named Obama.

Festival nears an end

STEVE DUNKELBERGER: THEATER ADDICTS MOURN >>>

The Festival of Northwest Plays ends its run this weekend with shows Saturday and Sunday at Tacoma's Theatre on the Square. Attendance has been good although the wide-open swaths of seat in the large theater made the festival look more empty than it really was.

But I love the space. A festival of this quality and heart wouldn't work on a small stage.

I was talking to Dennis Flayner after the show yesterday. He drove all the way down from Kent to check out the talent. He is new to Washington and is scoping out the talent in the Puget Sound in hopes of finding his way into the theater scene. He liked what he saw.

"I'm really blown away to be honest with you," he said. "I saw the short works too, and I have to tell you, some of them were really clever."
Agreed.

Saturday's double-feature line up, which starts at 4:30 p.m., includes: "Fish Play," "We Remember Breakfast," "Poor Shem," "Europa & Bull," "Hamlet, Prince of Denny’s," "Memorable Moments with Strangers," "The Man Who Fell off His Bicycle," "Kuwait," "The Soft Sand," "Snippy," "Ravishment," "Mammals and "Chat Room."

The night-time line up will be "Geography Club" and start at 8 p.m.

Sunday's double-feature line up includes:   the hometown favorite and undisputed show stopper "New Orleans Monologues," at 2:30 p.m. then the cleaver buddy show "In the Sawtooths," at 7:30 p.m.

All performances at Theater on the Square, 915 Broadway, near the corner of Broadway and 9th in downtown Tacoma. Tickets available at the door or at www.ticketwindowonline.com. Visit www.northwestplaywrights.org for more information.

HUSTLER OF CULTURE
You can stand atop the mountain and scream your naked desires to the universe or shed that synapse epilepsy and hug the South Sound today with your fellow man:

MUSIC: www.myspace.com/myteetharegold ">Gold Teeth â€" Tacoma’s most rock and roll rock band â€" will play www.myspace.com/bobsjavajive ">Bob’s Java Jive tonight. Gold Teeth is pretty much everything you’d like to be- drunk, loud, and teetering on the verge of craziness. If there’s a perfect venue for these guys it’s certainly the Jive.

MORE MUSIC: What’s on tonight
REAL STORY: Evergreen riot
FORUMS: Check ‘em out

THREATS AND PROMISES COLUMN
When Bobble Tiki listened to Mahjongg, who released Kontab on Feb. 22, their latest record and first on K, he felt like he had a grasp on where these guys were coming from. Their influences are across the board, delving into afro beat as much as electronica and distortion, but their songs remain digestible and almost catchy at times. Bobble Tiki felt like he’d found a band in Mahjongg (named after an ancient Chinese game of strategy and luck) that he understood. Bobble Tiki knew they were arty, but he didn’t feel alienated

Breakfast with Bobble Tiki runs six days a week now. Deal with it.

Upside down on Pacific Avenue

JAKE DE PAUL: ROUND AND ROUND YOU TURN ME >>>

On my way to Mary's Burger Bistro today at 1 p.m. I caught sight of an older gentleman teaching a young man how to hold a sign â€" for two minutes. The Guerrilla Marketing technique of waving a sign in front of motorist to steer them up 21st Street to their new condo home was the goal. However, the young man just wasn't grasping the concept.  He kept pointing the sign with an arrow the wrong way. The older man corrected him several times. The light turned green and I was off to burger heaven.

I opted for Mary's one-pound of meat Almighty between sourdough with mushrooms and swiss.

Marysalmighty It made me sleepy.

Driving home in a food coma I saw the young man on the same corner â€" 21st and Pacific.  His sign was upside down.

Dinner with DeRosa

STEPH DEROSA: DINNER WITH SICK ME >>>

I’ve done gone and gotten myself sick.  This sucks.  It sucks, sucks, and sucks.  I think most people around me are grateful that I have completely lost my voice.  My 5 year old thinks she has to actually whisper back when she responds to me.  Makes those indecipherable words list a little bit more hilarious.  Makes yelling at her just a little bit more frustrating.  Makes beating her all the more worth it.  Just kidding.

This week my Dinner with DeRosa guests are bringing me soup.  Please, I beg you, some brothy soup and lots of Popsicles for dessert!  I know, I know, poor Steph.  I can cut the sympathy cake with a huge ol’ knife, right?

Dinnercaroline3208 First Dinner with DeRosa guest is Caroline from the Key Bank Starbucks in downtown Tacoma.  It’s important she’s there so that I may drill her on what exactly this whole “training” was about.  The training that was so important they shut down 7,100 Starbucks locations nationwide from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. That’s roughly 135,000 employees re-learning how to pour the perfect shot.  She did inform me that they were all forced to watch a motivational video from Howard Schultz.  Do you think he quoted himself from Pour Your Heart Into It?  I can only dream of ever knowing what was said on that video.

Dinnerchristiandoyle3208 But of course to add fire to the coffee training discussion, I’m asking Christian Doyle, master barista to join us for soup and Popsicles.  He is by far Tacoma’s mercenary barista â€" this guy has worked everywhere. I caught up with him at Mandolin Café a few weeks back.  Who knows where I’ll see him working the coffee bar next.

Dinnerjenastedtler3208 Jena Stedler is my next guest.  By far one of the friendliest and best servers I have ever had the privilege of being, er, served by.  She works at Galanga Thai Cuisine on Broadway in downtown Tacoma.  This place, and the servers are amazing.  KAke and I had just always ducked into Fujiya across the street, paying no attention to the surrounding alternatives.  That was mainly because Fujiya catered to our testy girls and their high sushi demands.  We’ll have to return to Galanga next time and give them a kid-induced test run.  They’ll never know what hit ‘em.

Dinnerlouyoderandmartha I met some Wintergrass virgins as I was dining at Galanga: Lou Yoder and Martha Selby, both from Charlotte, N.C.  They’ll be sipping soup with me as I ask them all about their Tacoma bluegrass experience.

Dinnerlordryan3208 Finally, I’m inviting my friend Lord Ryan.  I have no idea what his last name is, nor do I care.  He is logged in my phone as Lord Ryan, and that’s how I greet him when I see him.  Why?  Because he told me to call him that.  I will never argue with individuality, creativeness, and eccentricity.  He’s passed the Steph DeRosa coolness test, repeatedly.  You know the one where I ask him to do something random, and completely for my own personal laugh factor?  You’ll experience it one day for yourself, I promise.

Mangiamo!

Saturday Night Live

MATT DRISCOLL: CLINTON'S LAST DITCH EFFORT >>>

For those who missed it, Sen. Hillary Clinton and former mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani made guest appearances on "Saturday Night Live" last night. Humorous, indeed, especially Clinton's cameo - but it waits to be seen whether the appearance will pack the same punch as Bubba playing his sax on Arsenio Hall. Texas and Ohio will probably be the judge of that.

Here's what the Gray Lady is saying about it.
