Wine Spectator: Best Restaurants For Wine Lovers in the South Sound

REPRESENT >>>

While preparing for my weekly disappoint where I attempt to find a wine bar in the South Sound open on a Sunday afternoon, I flipped through this month's Wine Spectator. And lo and behold, their "Best Restaurants For Wine Lovers" cover story includes a couple from the South Sound: Cicada Restaurant & Lounge (700 Fourth Ave. E) and Waterstreet Café & Bar (610 Water St. SW) in Olympia, and The Melting Pot (212 Pacific Ave.) in downtown Tacoma.

Three out of the 3,743 restaurants listed isn't bad.

Well, off to Morso in Gig Harbor. Have a great night.

5 Things To Do Today: Puppets!, Maia Santell, bowling, DJs ...

MONDAY, AUG. 2, 2010 >>>

1. Here's an event specifically designed to turn that frown upside down. We're talking, of course, about puppets! Puppeteers will stick their hands into it for tales of Moby Dick, Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermaid and a host of piratical puppet players from Robert L. Stevenson's Treasure Island at 11 a.m. inside Swan Creek Library. If you can't find anything to entertaining about puppets, well ... then ... there's always Blockbuster.

2. Singer Maia Santell hooks up with Gary Crooks on guitar and Steve Luceno on upright bass for an evening of jazz and blues at the Harmon Brewery and Eatery beginning at 7 p.m.

3. Designed for bartenders, waiters, waitresses, or anyone looking for a late weeknight of bowling, food, beer, socializing and fun, Chalet Bowl in the Proctor District hosts "Hip Night for Hospitality Professionals" under the glow lights from 9-11 p.m. Our guess is there will be some stepping over the line tonight!

4. Hot off the decks at the Best of Tacoma 2010 Premiere Party, DJ Darren Selector will spin Tacoma indie rock and underground hits at The New Frontier Lounge beginning at 9 p.m.

5. Jason Diamond and buds spin roots reggae during Rebel Monday/Industry Night inside O'Malley's Irish Pub beginning at 9 p.m.

MORNING SPEW: red sun, magic bracelets, Corey Hart ...

WHAT WE HAVE FOUND TODAY >>>

Actress Victoria Jackson is 51.

>>> SOUTH SOUND SPECIFIC

Ground breaking for the Tacoma Dome took place on July 1, 1981.  The building was constructed in less than two years and officially opened on April 21, 1983.  The Tacoma Dome hosted its first major concert on Aug. 11, 1983 with David Bowie, which so happens to be another Tacoma Dome first - accidental hairspray to the eyes in the men's bathroom.

>>> NEW WORD FOR THE URBAN DICTIONARY

sunstupid / suhn-stoo-pid

To think it's suddenly OK to stare at the sun.

Usage example: Last night, for a minute, Mitch forgot about pesky trifles like love, mortgages, child rearing, planting gardens, dreams, money, shoes, large wooden letters spelling out cuss words in Tollefson Plaza, parking spaces, mysterious rashes, foreign policy, baseball, Best of Tacoma 2010 and everything else as he stood sunstupid in his backyard weeds gazing at the red sun as it set behind his trailer.

>>> DID YOU HEAR?

The Dutch said "screw Afghanistan."

Magic bracelets make more sense than a card in the spokes.

Corey Hart wears his sunglasses on the field.

Man robs Wendy's, then calls back to complain.

Morning Spew posts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning on this blog. Sometimes it even posts in the morning.

Weekly Volcano Twitter Stalker

The Weekly Volcano follows B & C-list celebrities so you don't have to >>>

Just like most good, new-age, social media applications, Twitter allows people to share and be privy to once personal, almost wholly pointless information about peoples' lives. It's seemingly endless. While Twitter is mostly full of everyday, ho-hum people - just like you and me, sharing info about what type of oatmeal we ate for breakfast and where we get our hair cut - Twitter is also a magnet for the moderately-famous.

Stars of yesterday, illiterate millionaire athletes, former cast members of Saved By the Bell - you can follow them all, intimately, on Twitter.

But, you've got standards. We get that.

That's why we'll do it for you, in a feature we like to call Weekly Volcano Twitter Stalker.

Today, checking in with...

Jackie Chan!

August 1: Jackie Chan has an unnatural obsession with stuffed panda bears... his "babies."

July 31: See...

"I'm taking my two babies LA & ZY to Asia for the first time!! Guess where?" 2:07 p.m., via Twitpic

July 31: Imagine the honor of finding Jackie Chan's two phones. You can see the honor in the woman's face.

"Here is the family that found my 2 phones. Thank you so much! French people so nice! I love France!" 7:36 a.m., via Twitpic

July 27: Oh, for fuck's sake

IN THEIR WORDS: Eight reasons to attend Sunday's Radio8Ball show in Tacoma

Andras Jones

FUTURE THINGS ARE COMING >>>

The Radio8Ball Show is a musical talk/game show based upon the concept of synchronicity. The format is simple and unique. Guests and audience members ask questions to The Pop Oracle. The answers are divined by spinning a wheel or picking a card that determines which song the musical guest will perform as the answer to the question. Speakeasy Arts Cooperative is bringing Radio8Ball with singer-songwriter Jerin Falkner to Tacoma on Sunday, Aug. 8. We asked R8B host and creator Andras Jones for eight reasons why people should attend.

  1. Synchronicity makes you lucky! They say the key to being lucky is the ability to recognize and appreciate your luck. That's what synchronicity does. It's a clue that we are in the right place at the right time. By engaging The Pop Oracle we train the part of our mind that recognizes synchronicity to recognize it more often.
  2. Synchronicity is sexy! We're not saying that Radio8Ball will get you laid but there is a reason that words like fate, serendipity and kismet are all associated with erotic love. When we get that tingling sensation that we are in the right place at the right time the people around us look that much more attractive. Like beer goggles for the soul.
  3. Synchronicity makes music better! You know how it is. You'll be driving in your car thinking about things in your life when a song comes on by an artist you didn't think you liked but the sentiments in the song jibe so completely with your inner experience that you actually listen to it in a whole new way, and you love it! We love creating a venue where songwriters get listened to like this and Jerin Falkner is the perfect artist for this show. Great lyrics. Soulful melodies. A generous spirit. By the end of the night you'll want her CD (if you don't already have it.)
  4. Synchronicity makes you the star! This is a participatory show. If your question is chosen you'll be onstage with me and our musical guest.  The cameras will be rolling, the tapes will be set to record, and our photographer will have you in their sites. The show will be re-broadcast on local cable and, for fifteen minutes, Your Question will be everyone's question. Plus you'll get a prize from one of our sponsors.
  5. Synchronicity doesn't make mistakes! It's not a meaningless coincidence that Radio8Ball comes to Tacoma as a Speakeasy Arts Cooperative project. The cosmic cats and art rebels at Speakeasy are stirring up some major "magick" downtown and if you are a creative person there is probably something for you to gain from aligning with your future friends at Speakeasy Arts Cooperative.
  6. Synchronicity is an invitation! If you are reading this there is a chance that you have even more to contribute to Radio8Ball then your $5 at the door, your questions and your good attention. We are building an entertainment juggernaut in your backyard and we need creative people who are inspired by synchronicity to be a part of it. Film artists, musicians, photographers, graphic designers, potential sponsors and promoters are all needed. We are also looking for energetic healer types who enjoy working with crowds.
  7. Synchronicity can make you seem or feel CRAZY! That's where I come in. I've been working with The Pop Oracle for more than 12 years. I have indulged in its excesses and learned from its sometimes brutally unforgiving mirror. Ultimately, I can tell you that The Pop Oracle, like life, is VERY generous. My job as host is to help you appreciate this generosity, stay grounded, and keep a sense of humor about the whole thing.
  8. Synchronicity is NOW. Seriously, right now, look around you and listen to what's playing in the air or in your head. Synchronicity isn't a sporadic phenomenon. It's a constant and sometimes we notice it. I hope you come out to our show Sunday so we can share synchronicity together but even if you don't I invite you to play with this powerful medium by asking a question and then making or letting something random happen. I've been doing it for years and I still get surprised every day.
  9. Radio8Ball Show

Interview with comedian Doug Stanhope

FUTURE THINGS ARE COMING >>>

The last time comedian Doug Stanhope performed at Jazzbones he took off his pants on stage - or so we hear. Apparently, this kind of thing is par for the course with the booze and cigarette loving comic. Heading back to Tacoma this week, and as critical as ever of the comedy industry, the Weekly Volcano's Rev. Adam McKinney caught up with Stanhope recently to get his thoughts, dragging him out of the pool to do so.

Twink the Wonder Kid set for "soft return" Friday at The New Frontier in Tacoma

Twink the Wonder Kid

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES >>>

Despite the fact Dignitaries drummer Lino Fernandez was recently involved in a scooter vs. automobile accident (with Lino, naturally, on the scooter), and surgeries and pain medication have followed, I just received word from Lino's brother, Reylan, that the band is still planning to take the stage this Friday at The New Frontier - for as long as Lino (a true gamer) can hold up. And why would they not? With a lineup that includes the ultimate "Hard Soul" of Bellingham's The DTs (a creation of Estrus Records head-honcho and Mono Men stalwart Dave Crider), along with what Dick Rossetti is calling the "soft return" of his band Twink the Wonder Kid, Friday night's show at The New Frontier will be one of the coming weekend's high points.

Coincidentally, Twink the Wonder Kid and the Dignitaries will both be back Aug. 21 for Music and Art in Wright Park. Reylan Fernandez tells the Volcano that if his brother's injuries wont allow him to play the show, Umber Sleeping's Peter Tietjen will be filling in.

5 Things To Do: Arts Night Out, eat snacks with the candidates, "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde," metal madness ...

Meet your neighbors tonight.

TUESDAY, AUG. 3, 2010 >>>

1. Over the years, a trend in South Sound neighborhoods has shifted residents' attention from the front porch to the decks, patios and porches in back of the house - and away from what's going on in their own neighborhood. That might not seem so important, but Safe Streets says regularly retreating to the sanctuary of a backyard can hurt neighborhood awareness and organization. So one of many block parties tonight as part of National Night Out and step off your front park, around the kid's skateboard, and into the streets, in front of businesses and into parks to bond with your neighbors. Also, the Hilltop Artist Arts Night Out featuring glassblowing, graffiti art, chalk art contest, potluck, DJ, dancing and more will be held from 4-8 p.m. at Jason Lee Middle School.

2. The League of Women Voters of Tacoma-Pierce County host candidates from Legislative Districts 2, 25, 31; County Council District 1; auditor; and prosecuting attorney for handshakes and snacks at 5:30 p.m., followed by a brief explanation from each candidate on how to solve the budget problem, ending with more handshakes and less snacks at Pierce College in Puyallup.

3. Harlequin Productions will hold a free public reading of its next production, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, (adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher' from the original novella by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde) at 6:30 p.m. inside the State Theater in Olympia.

4. Ralph Porter hosts Ha Ha Tuesdays with guest comics Joe Fontnot and Lance Edward at 8:30 p.m. inside Jazzbones. DJ Omar spins afterward.

5. Infernal Legion, Terra Morta and Gorratorium will perform some lovely devil metal at 9 p.m. inside Hell's Kitchen. But the angels behind the bar will be serving $2 tacos, $2 beers and $2 wells.
