Great ride at the Cage

RON SWARNER: BLANCOED >>>

Blancoeyesclosed I guess I hear it. People keep talking about how Blanco Bronco reminds them of Pavement. Malkmus is a quirky dude with an acute voice and deadpan delivery that makes hipsters feel better about being discarded at high school and jocks feel better about their secret desire to make-out with the hipster chicks. Blanco Bronco lead singer Aaron Wilson is far less subtle, as is the group’s overall aesthetic. If I continue my overhead view of high-school, Blanco Bronco are more suited for the drama club set. The urgent, trembling voice, paired with hard-driving and distorted variety, is pretty and none too subtle. It’s also wonderfully imperfect, which could explain the Pavement theories.

Blancobassfuzzy Blancofade Blancodrummercrisp Blancobleed Oh, I guess I didn’t mention that Blanco Bronco are freakin’ fantastic.  Their show last night at the Acme Grub Cage swelled with energy, talent and just the right amount of slacker attitude â€" at least on the surface. They grabbed every single person’s full attention yet operated in their own world. Brilliant.

Dinner is back

STEPH DEROSA: DINNER WITH DEROSA >>>

My mind is in full springtime mode.  This weekend we filled a truck up with old furniture.  Trash bags were hauled to the dump by the pounds. My allergy attacks took every last bit of energy I had left.  Yet, it was nothing but cold and hail yesterday.  This is just messed up.  It’s like being on the birth control pill: Your body is faked out to think it’s pregnant with all the side effects, when in reality you have no baby in the pouch.

Nevertheless, I have to cook dinner.  And I need guests.

Dinner330hyon Hyon “Luv” Kil, part-owner-manager of Fabulous Firwood Roadhouse, is my first springtime dinner guest.  This guy is a big ball of everything you could ever want in a guy, in a friend, and in a business partner.  And ladies, as far as I know, he’s single.  Since Pappi Swarner vetoed my “Pimp Out Pierce County” idea, I’m going to have to play matchmaker here at Dinner with DeRosa.  He’s smart, extremely kind, and has values to the core.  Spend a few moments with him and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Dinner330denisesmith Denise Smith, owner of A Rhapsody in Bloom Florist and Café Latte, will bring us some of her stunning flowers to help us stay in the spring mode. Aside from the quaint feel, warm ambiance, and friendly vibe everyone receives upon entering Rhapsody, I simply admire her values.  Smith supports her community by using local bakeries, local coffee suppliers, and hosting local musicians weekly.  If you’ve never been into A Rhapsody in Bloom â€" GO.  You will love sipping on a yummy, warm coffee in their gorgeous garden room.  It feels as though you are outside, yet there’s no snow falling on you â€" in March.  (Friggen’ snow!)

Dinner330parkway Oh, sigh: It’s The Parkway Tavern people.  Can you hear my heart flutter?  BanditoBetty, McKenzie, and Nick are Parkway staples and Tacoma’s very own beer ambassadors.  And I love them.  No, not just because they bring me beer, but because they also happen to be really great people. Stop into The Parkway Tavern Thursday nights and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Dinner330ymca Along with our Parkway beer, Rhapsody coffee, and conversation with Hyon, we’re going to need some YMCA love.  These kids from the downtown Tacoma YMCA have consistently provided a smile every time I need it.  Admit it, it’s not always a big bag of fun knowing you are on your way to work out.  I’d really rather be at Satellite Coffee doing some people watching, but I traipse into the gym anyway.  It’s these people that I see when I walk in, and it’s these people I appreciate when I’m there.  They’re always happy, and always helpful.

Since I’m talking about the YMCA and physical fitness, I’d like to personally thank everyone at Frost Park last Friday.  I’d like to thank you for not pointing and laughing at me while I braved the snow for an hour in capri yoga pants after a work-out at the Y.  I looked ridiculous, froze my ass off, yet when I left for the gym that morning I had no concept of the word “snow” on a springtime day of March 28.  Thank you, and I appreciate the ridicule kept to a minimum, or at least behind my back where I can’t hear it.

Viva la Tacoma springtime!

Nobody does the voodoo like they do

STEVE DUNKELBERGER: VOODOO FUN >>>

Lakewood Playhouse is currently staging the Caribbean-themed musical Once Upon This Island. And I don't really know what to say about it. The acting was solid but not overall stellar. The singing was good, with a few mulligans here and there. The set design was simple but effective. All that totaled up and I loved it more than the summary of its components. I was a great show. I found myself swaying to the island beats and diving headlong into the story. By the time the lights flashed back on at the end of the show, I was well into my island trance. If theater is an avenue for escapism, I was well on my way to sitting on the beaches alongside the island workers.

Toss down a pint for NPR

STEVE DUNKELBERGER: BEER AND BANTER >>>

Nothing says home to me than pints of beer and National Public Radio. I am a fan and a deep supporter of both. I began to openly weep with joy when I heard that Doyle's Public House will be donating $1 for every pint of Guinness it sells during KUOW’s spring pledge drive April 7-17.

Previous efforts have brought in more than $1,600 for the voice of liberal media elite fans everywhere.

Doyle's Public House is at 208 Saint Helens Ave. in Tacoma.

Traverlicious

CARMEN JONES: TRAVER GALLERY + BEER = FUN >>>

Traverpeoplehavingfun More than 100 happy faces flew into the Traver Gallery last night for their beer and art pairing.

Traverbeertasting We learned about The Harmon's brewing process through brewmaster Mike Davis and we sampled several different sorts of Harmon beer.

Traverandthecrowd We also listened carefully to Bill Traver who talked with us about the art of collecting, and how art is all about making the ordinary extraordinary.

I have to drop mad props on the Traver for this cool idea and unique partnership that drew so many to their gallery.

I'm now a dedicated fan.

Girls Rock!

FILM
Girls Rock!

The act of picking up a guitar and making some noise becomes a life-changing experience in Girls Rock!, an irresistible new documentary from filmmakers Arne Johnson and Shane King that showcases the transformative power of rock ‘n’ roll.

The film’s subject is the Rock ‘n’ Roll School for Girls; every girl between the ages of 8 and 18 should be required to check it out.  The weeklong summer sessions, which began in Portland, Ore., and now are offered nationwide, give girls the chance to learn an instrument, form a band, write a song and perform before an audience.

The deeper motive, however, is to help girls work on confidence and self-esteem issues.  As the camp’s assistant director, Jen Agosta, explains, the camp is a place where “it is 100 percent OK to be exactly who you are.” Rated PG. Three-and-a-half stars. Full review. â€" Mary Houlihan
[The Grand Cinema, 5:10, 7:10, 9:10 pm, $4.50-$8, 606 Fawcett Ave., Tacoma, 253.593.4474]

Let's kickstart this Monday

BRAD ALLEN: DRINK OF THE DAY >>>

Magoosmanowar There's something about Magoo's Annex and Eatery that always gets the best of me. Maybe it's the fact that when I'm there I'm covered with bros who know how to throw down, and lickable women who are always down for my kind of a good time. Then, mix that together with excellent bartenders like Greg who recently gave me and a special lady one of his finest concoctions: The Man O' War shot.

Tater Tot asked for something light and simple and Greg was the perfect doctor to deliver this order.

The Man O' War looks like a jellyfish and it contains Sambuca, a Bailey's floater with a few drops of Chambord that create the marine invertebrate feel. This shot is a chick pleaser because it not only looks fancy, but it goes down slick and easy, just like I do. Thanks, Greg and Magoo's.
