Tacoma Opera's "La Traviata" through a professional lens

TACOMA OPERA: It stages Giuseppe Verdi's operatic masterpiece about life and love in the demimonde of 19th-century Paris. Photo credit: Peter Serko

CHATTING WITH PROFESSIONALS >>>

Tacoma Opera is a jewel in the crown that is the Tacoma arts scene. It's all locally produced and draws on both national and regional talent to put on world-class productions of operas known far and wide.

Tonight, Tacoma Opera will stage La Traviata, a Giuseppe Verdi masterpiece about the beautifully moving romance between a courtesan who falls in love with a gentleman, only to have her past come back to get her. It's heartbreaking. It's romantic. It's everything an opera should be.

Tacoma Opera is staging the show for just two nights, but approached it as if it was to run on Broadway for months. Local photographer Peter Serko, who has served as a volunteer photographer for Tacoma Opera for the past five seasons, says La Traviata's sets and costumes are stunning.

"I have seen La Traviata in four other productions at other opera companies," says Serko. "This is one of the best, if not the best I have seen. It is an accessible opera, one that everyone can enjoy right from the opening bars of the prelude to the tragic ending. I have been to many Tacoma Operas."

Serko follows the opera from a unique angle - darting between bushes, peeking through windows, slipping through columns - seeking not only to document, but also to tell a story with his lens. He spent last night's dress rehearsal tucked in a corner, photographing performers taking and leaving the stage. Impressively, the company has brought this opera together in less than a month, including learning lyrics in a foreign language.

"The costumes are absolutely beautiful and I know for a fact that the entire cast loves wearing them," he says. "The set is simple but visually appealing. Unlike many set photographers, who tend to shoot everything from front and center, I like to move around and shoot from different angles. I find that I can tell the story better that way, see the relationships between characters better."

>>> FRIDAY, MARCH 15: MOSQUITO HAWK

Olympia's Mosquito Hawk joins Tacoma band Mahnhammer - the band's first show with guitarist Mike Crum from Mico De Noche - Portland's Dark Country and Seattle's Gang Cult for a house show in Tacoma. "We have some new songs, and some re-vamped old tunes since our new addition," says Mahnhammer's vocalist Micah Hembree. "We are very happy to know that there are great people like Chuck that will open up his home to support the music scene." Sean Lanksbury (vox/guitar) chimes in. "I'm personally stoked because Friday's lineup spans the I-5 corridor and all kinds of heavy music. Varied night of killer music in a great atmosphere? Doesn't get much better." Agreed.

>>> SATURDAY, MARCH 16: WHISKERS WINE & DINE

In support of Coalition Humane's efforts to fight pet overpopulation, the Whiskers Wine & Dine event will go down Saturday night at the Sharon McGavick Center. Not only with the benefit include an exquisite buffet style dinner and drinks, you should also expect an amazing silent auction and help support a cause that is passionate about our furry family. All proceeds benefit the Northwest Spay and Neuter Center. Tickets cost $60 and include dinner and a drink coupon. - Weekly Volcano

  • Sharon McGavick Center, 6-10 p.m., $60, 4500 Steilacoom Blvd., Lakewood, nwspayneuter.org

>>> SATURDAY, MARCH 16-SUNDAY, MARCH 17: THE GOLD RUSH

The Northwest Sinfonietta bills itself as, "an orchestra to be reckoned with," not to mention an orchestra of, "passion, vision, thrill, and creation." Anyone who has seen the Northwest Sinfonietta in action would have trouble arguing with these statements, as the musical body routinely wows audiences in Tacoma, Puyallup and Seattle. Saturday the Northwest Sinfonietta will perform the original score to Charlie Chaplin's flick, The Gold Rush, in which the Little Fellow is cast as "the Lone Prospector," one of the hopeful hordes of prospectors during the Alaskan gold rush of 1898. Chaplin drew his creative muse from grim history, specifically the tragic saga of the Donner Party, an ill-fated expedition of westward travelers who got caught in a bitter winter storm in the Sierras, resorting to cannibalism to survive. - WV

  • Temple Theater, 7:30 p.m. March 16, $19-$49, 47 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma, 800.838.3006

>>> SATURDAY, MARCH 16: BEFORE CARS

Chad Channing, former Nirvana drummer, brings his pop rock band Before Cars to Rocket Records for an afternoon, live performance. Before Cars are promoting its latest album, How We Run, dropped Feb. 26 on the band's record label, Pocket Star Records. Best thing about this album is the acoustic, singer/songwriter feel. Best thing about Rocket Records shows is they start early, you can browse music, there is a cool gumball machine, and owner Steve Gaydich and his dog, Bruno, are never without smiles, making it feel like your living room. Combine the two, and you're golden. - NM

  • Rocket Records, 3 p.m., no cover, 3843 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 253.756.5186

>>> SATURDAY, MARCH 16: SOUR OWL

Ooh! Another free show! This time at Ben Moore's in Olympia - a few-and-far-between music venue that's known more for its Best $3.75 Fish and Chips than hosting a show. But, Saturday, you can enjoy a live set from Sour Owl in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. Rock, pop, jazz, fusion, whatever you want to call Sour Owl's sound, just know that it's sweet. - NM

  • Ben Moore's, 9 p.m., no cover, 112 Fourth Ave. W., Olympia, 360.357.7527

>>> SATURDAY, MARCH 16: HARMONY SWEEPSTAKES

The Harmony Sweepstakes may sound like a new dating service, but it's actually an annual event in Olympia featuring some of the region's best a cappella talent. No kidding. A night of music and awards, Saturday's festivities will include hosts and guest artists Six Appeal, the 2012 first-place champions, along with event emcee Smilin' Jay of Olympia's KGY AM/FM radio. Event hype available on the Washington Center's website promises, "an evening of impeccable harmonies and scintillation arrangements." Hard to go wrong there. - WV

  • Washington Center, 7:30 p.m., $13-$26, 512 Washington St. SE, Olympia, 360.753.8585

>>> SUNDAY, MARCH 17: ST. PATRICK'S DAY AT O'MALLEY'S

Celebrate St. Patty's in true Irish fashion at O'Malley's in Tacoma Sunday night. Bag pipers and performance dancers kick off the night, followed by live music from Shivering Denizens, The Fun Police and The Approach - plus tons of free schwag, food specials and of course, green beers. This will be a Patty Party not to miss. For more St. Patrick's Day parties, check out the Weekly Volcano's St. Patrick's Day Command Center. - NM

WHAT SOME OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS ARE UP TO

CHRISTIAN CARVAJAL Theater Critic
We're seeing Philadelphia Story at Harlequin and Oliver! at Capital Playhouse. Just as happily, we're also taking a bunch of foodie friends to Marrow.

REV. ADAM MCKINNEY Music Writer
Well, it's St. Patrick's Day weekend, so I'll likely be avoiding the bars. Much like New Year's Eve, St. Patrick's Day is amateur hour when it comes to drinking. Best just to steer clear.

ALEC CLAYTON Arts Critic
I'm in play-going mode this weekend. I'll be seeing The Philadelphia Story at Harlequin, Oliver! at Capital Playhouse and The Joy Luck Club at Tacoma Little Theatre.

NIKKI MCCOY Feature Writer
Plans include Friday happy hour goodness with all my downtown regulars. After they have their fun, it's my turn as another bartender and I plan to hit up the Dwell Hole in Tacoma for a kick ass house show. I hope I make it in time to see Mahnhammer and Dark Country (PDX). Hot damn! Saturday and Sunday, it's back to parent-land, which has its perks - like warm morning snuggles and blueberry pancakes.

JOSH RIZEBERG Music Columnist
I'm recording a verse at Kept See's spot for the League of Extraordinary Emcees album. Saturday, I'm teaching my spoken-word/poetry class at D.A.S.H. from 1-2 p.m. Last, but definite not least, I'll be chilling with my family!

JACKIE FENDER Food Writer
Friday evening I'll be sipping on copious amounts of joe at Bluebeard Coffee while listening to local authors read their works from Wrist Mag, to be followed by an open poetry slam. That said, the weekend will mostly be consumed with work feeding the pre-partying and hungover masses. And pow wow with team peace out to talk non-profit awesomeness somewhere in the mix.

ADRIENNE KUEHL Food Writer
I'll be throwing a baby shower for one of my best friends. Let the "oohing" and "ahhing" over tiny clothes commence! Oh, and I should probably do those taxes I didn't get to last weekend. ...

NIC LEANOARD Music Writer
I will be a hermit this weekend while watching the PAC 12 basketball tournament as well as other college basketball games. If I'm feeling up to it, on Saturday night I may go check out AKA's record release party at McCoy's. Other then that, I will be pretty lame.

STEVE DUNKELBRGER Nightlife Correspondent
I'll be hitting A MidSummer Night's Dream at Tacoma Youth theatre at this weekend. I hear the girl playing Lysander is highly talented as well as genetically awesome.

ROCKFORD ROWLEY All-ages Music Columnist
This weekend I am going out in search of a hard copy of the newly released Strike Gently by The Virgins. Stricken with illness and exorbitant amounts of schoolwork this week, there's nothing like a new album to lift the spirits.

Tacoma City Ballet Scavenger Hunt Bonus: Mouse of the Month

CONTEST BASED ON HIDDEN NUTS AND ART CARDS >>>

Tacoma City Ballet is in the midst of a yearlong scavenger hunt for Golden Krakatuk Nuts. You heard right. Nuts. The nuts tie into the company's highly anticipated Dec. 7, 2013 performance, Prequel to The Nutcracker.

The contest in a nutshell: TCB hides hand-painted Golden Krakatuk Nuts inside jewel boxes around Tacoma; inside the boxes is a scroll with prize details, such as gift certificates, merchandise or tickets to Tacoma City Ballet's World Premier of said Nutcracker in December. Each month through the year, Golden Krakatuk Nuts will be hidden at businesses throughout Tacoma. To find the nuts, decipher the poetic clues, which will be posted at Tacoma City Ballet's website, Facebook page, as well as this blog. You find the Golden Krakatuk Nuts and great riches will be heaped upon you! For complete on the contest and Nutcracker performance, click here.

All the Golden Krakatuk Nuts hidden this month were claimed at the secret location, which was The Hub.

But, all is not lost. Fifty art postcards featuring Mouse Prince I from Tacoma City Ballet's world premiere The Nutcracker can be found at local businesses throughout Tacoma beginning today.  The first person to find the Mouse of the Month and bring him to the TCB Office will be rewarded with tickets to the production in December. In addition, a grand prize package will be awarded in late November to a lucky contestant who collects all nine mice - one hidden per month. For more details, go to the Mouse of the Month Facebook Event.

Tacoma City Ballet is encouraging mouse hunters to spread the word about where they find their mice using #MouseoftheMonth on twitter.

Weekend Hip-Hop: "We Out Here" battles, Island Trybe, Blue Nose Music, the Breaklites and others ...

ABOM: Catch him at the "We Out Here" battle league in Olympia.

SLAINTE, YO! >>>

Start the weekend off by supporting SP's brand new "We Out Here" battle league tonight. MC battles are experiencing a popular resurgence - thanks partly to Alliance Battle League and the healthy battle attitude of Olympia MC's. The first "We Out Here" battle begins at 7 p.m. inside the Olympia Ballroom. Scheduled to perform are Tacoma-area MC's Patron, Stuey Newton, Hushhush, Nu Empire, Yak Nasty That Nilla (for some reason I don't like writing the word "Nilla") and Abom. This show looks good, as there are also a lot of well-known Olympia MC's on the bill.

Does hip-hop go well with St. Patrick's Day? I guess it does if ya are House of Pain or Macklemore. If ya want to have St. Patty's Day and hip-hop fun, then Saturday is yo night. Starting at 9 p.m., for $12 (I know, ouch!), Bremerton's The Garage Bar and Grill hosts Island Trybe.

Sunday is a busy day for 253 hip-hop heads. Blue Nose Music has a show in Portland, so tell yo Oregon friends to go check them out. Congratulations to Blue Nose for getting the heck out of the state. Also Sunday, the Breaklites will be performing live on KEXP at 8 p.m. Ya can stream it. KEXP has been showing some proper love to Tacoma artists as of late. The radio station based in Seattle has recently hosted in-studio performances by ILLFIGHTYOU and Bruce Leroy. Thank ya KEXP for shining some light on the talent we have down here in The Tac'!

South Sound Sidekick: How to take care of your back and rectum

DR. SOREM: He practices the plank position whenever he can.

South Sound Sidekick series offers advice from experts living in the, well, South Sound. It posts every Friday. Today, Chiropractic physician Monti Sorem, DC, CSCS, EMT-IV, NSCA - who works at Elite Sports and Spine in Bellevue - has back care advice.

Monti Sorem writes,

Whether you are an office worker for the state, the local bartender at your favorite downtown watering hole, a weekend warrior, or over-the-hill class champion, you will experience back pain at some time.

Depending on activities of daily living, fitness levels and anatomical structure put more at risk than others. Having back pain occasionally is normal, but when it becomes chronic and affects your everyday life, work or sport, than it is an issue. When there is transient pain after activity, it is a signal that your muscles and joints are giving in. If you are in pain, stop doing what you did or train your body to handle what you put it through.

What you DO NOT want to do is try to cover up chronic pain, ignoring it, then go to lift the case of beer that just got delivered to the back door and prolapsing your rectum. OK, so that is an extreme case but it could happen. Some more common injuries are to the ligaments to the spine, muscles of the spine and the intervertebral discs - the cushion between the spine bones.  Believe you me; you don't want a disc injury. In my professional life these are difficult cases and everyone has a very individual experience with pain and disability. Once that disc is injured, you will have continued problems in the future and realistically your spine is a ticking bomb.

So here it my short version of advice to take care of your back and rectum for that matter:

  • First thing upon waking, before getting up to relieve yourself, do the cat camel exercise shown in the video below.
  • Think about your movements. That is, be deliberate with them as opposed to mindless movement, especially with moving objects such as picking up the garbage bag or picking up kids.
  • Yes, the old saying "bend with your knees" is still kind of relevant, but really keep your back straight and hinge at the hips (helps to stick your butt backward).  I call this giving yourself a J-Lo booty.
  • Do a few movements to work on core strength when the commercials come on of your favorite TV show.
  • Watch my favorite low back expert Dr. Stuart McGill and this web video.  Yes he does have a mustache that reminds you of a 70s adult film star, but info is great.

The Fun Police vs. giant toddler at O'Malley's Irish Pub

THE FUN POLICE: The band doesn't want you to be a baby and stay home on St. Patrick's Day.

The Fun Police, it must be said, are one of those workhorse local bands that absolutely fucking brings it. They treat each venue the same, making sure the crowd leaves dazed, a ringing in their ears and smiles on their faces - because they've just seen a show. Through a dizzying mesh of styles including Celtic rock, punk, and reggae, the Fun Police have created a sound all their own. Sunday the band will be at O'Malley's Irish Pub, celebrating the beer-flavored holiday - with many other bands on indoor and outdoor stages - in quite possibly the most authentic place to fall down and get drunk (Irish style) that T-town has to offer.

O'Malley's Irish Pub, with Shivering Denizens, Menace, Smoke Like Daddy, DB & The Struggle, Joe & Lauren Lively, Mr. Blackwatch, Seamus & Suzanne piping duo, Firefighter Pipes and Drums, Sunday, March 17, starts at 10 a.m., 2403 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 253.627.9403

5 Things To Do Today: Drum 'n' Bass Night, artists reception, Rachel Corrie, "Woman in Black" and more ...

DJ IRIS: Her journey has taken her from UK Hard House, into the sounds of Trance and Progressive, finally culminating in her current focus of Deep Drum and Bass, Techno. Photo courtesy of Raichu/Facebook

SATURDAY, MARCH 16 2013 >>>

1. Good news. The folks behind the annual summer Urban Art Festival have fired up the fundraising machine, hosting a drum 'n' bass night at 9 p.m. inside The Loch's. DJ Iris will headline the night. Her dirty, deep and sub-heavy vibe destroyed the soles of UAF attendees last summer. With tunes signed to Metalheadz and Hospital - two of the biggest DnB labels in the world - Iris started collaborating on original productions with DnB veteran Quadrant. Their first tune, "Anthropocene," was spotted by Goldie himself, and snapped up for the Metalheadz Genesis Vol. 4 EP. Iris will receive 253 support from Habit featuring The Specialist MC, D:Fi and Suga, so expect a little ragga influenced dance floor and bangin' roughneck tunes. If all goes well, the speedy, dark beats might have a regular home on Pacific Avenue.

2. Northwest Mosaic Today, an invitational exhibition of artwork by 15 artists from the Pacific Northwest is on display at Tacoma Public Library's Handforth Gallery. An artist reception will be held from 2-5 p.m.

3. Rachel Corrie was 23 years old when she traveled from Olympia to the Gaza strip to fight for Palestinian rights. Tragically, she was killed when a bulldozer ran over her as she defended a Palestinian family home. In recognition of the 10th anniversary of Corrie's stand in Gaza, several events will be held from 1-9 p.m. in downtown Olympia. Read Nikki McCoy's full feature on the Rachel Corrie memorial events in the Weekly Volcano's Mudroom section.

4. Today and tomorrow are your last chances to catch The Woman in Black at the Lakewood Playhouse. It's a masterful production that demonstrates what talent, commitment, hard work, and impeccable direction can accomplish on a relatively minor budget. Read Christian Carvajal's full review of The Woman in Black in the Weekly Volcano's Arts section.

5. If you've seen AKA and The Heart Hurt Goods perform, you've seen how much the band loves its art. You can see it in the band member's fist pumps and facial expressions; in their hip shakes and smiles and in the way they administer their music, be it through a microphone, keyboard, guitar or turn table. Catch the group before it rakes its new album on tour at 9 p.m. inside McCoy's in downtown Olympia.

Tweets of the Week: March 9-16

HOW TWEET IT IS >>>

Whether you've been on Twitter since its beginnings in 2006 or you're a Twitter neophyte, you know keeping up on important tweets can be overwhelming. If you follow everything and everyone that you find interesting, you can end up with hundreds and hundreds of Tweets showing up in your feed on a daily basis.

Don't despair. Every Saturday the Weekly Volcano shares important and pointless Tweets from South Sound Twitter accounts, and sometimes beyond, so you may stay on top of rabbits on a leash and restaurant opening news - as well as the latest action on the streets.

Follow the Weekly Volcano on Twitter. Because otherwise we're coming to your house, and while we will bring wine, we will not, under any circumstances, take off our shoes.

  • There's a spot in my musical life that has been left dormant since the days of Bright Eyes and Death Cab For Cutie - these sensitive indie bands that constructed perfectly poppy songs that somehow managed to sum up how I felt as a lost, confused young man. I didn't know what girls were all about. I didn't know what it meant to be crushed by a day-to-day job. These artists did their part to tell me. At some point, though, I passed them by. I didn't need someone to tell me how hard relationships were, or what dicks bosses could be. I knew all that. Listening to The Saturday Giant - a one-man project of Philip Cogley - I'm brought back to those confusing days of heart-felt indie rock. Come to think of it, girls are still a little confounding. - Rev. Adam McKinney

  • Look, I'm going to level with you: Live performances are where it's at. This is the thing that I'm trying to persuade you to do. To see live shows. What sounds more fun to you: some chillwave band that will allow you to contact the douchiest and most reposed part of your subconscious, or this carnival freakshow that will bring you out of your dumb, useless shell and make you drink quantities of liquor of which you are unfamiliar and dance your dumb brains out? The answer must be obvious, but I'll tell you anyway that Dear Rabbit has the sleazy accordion and weirdo swaying energy to make your Saturday self finally open up and be somebody for once in your dance-less life. It's the least you can do to make yourself a complete and freaky person. - Rev. AM

Oakhouse Restaurant & Bar Lakewood. Dine & Dance with Renaissance Jazz. 7 pm. $10.

5 Things To Do Today: St. Patrick's Day parties, "The Gold Rush," FabLab, Vicci Martinez and more ...

SUNDAY, MARCH 17, 2013 >>>

1. There are better ways to spend St. Patrick's Day than sitting at home in front of a big-ass bowl of Lucky Charms. Plan your ultimate Irish wake with the Weekly Volcano's St. Patrick's Day Command Center.

2. Part high-tech-heaven, part creative design and old-world style, FabLab has been offering workshops - from laser cutting and robotics, to leather and woodworking - to the community since November. From 2-4 p.m. the public is invited to an afternoon FabLab Member Social & Open House. This will be a chance for members to share and the publuc to see recent projects and hear updates.

3. You might remember the title from movie previews in 1993. You might have read the book ... or rather your mom read it. Even if you've done neither, you've likely heard of The Joy Luck Club, the modern classic by Amy Tan about four young Chinese-American women, their traditional, Chinese mothers and the hijinks that ensue as they try to understand each other. TAcoma Little Theatre stages the play at 2 p.m. Read Kristin Kendle's full feature on The joy Luck Club in the Weekly Volcano's Arts section.

4. Saturday the Northwest Sinfonietta will perform the original score to Charlie Chaplin's flick, The Gold Rush at 2 p.m. inside Puyallup's Liberty Theater. In the film, the Little Fellow is cast as "the Lone Prospector," one of the hopeful hordes of prospectors during the Alaskan gold rush of 1898. Chaplin drew his creative muse from grim history, specifically the tragic saga of the Donner Party, an ill-fated expedition of westward travelers who got caught in a bitter winter storm in the Sierras, resorting to cannibalism to survive.

5. There are better ways to get your Irish on than at a Vicci martinez show. That said, there are not many better shows than a Martinez performance, which will happen at 9 p.m. inside her home away from home, Jazzbones. Tacoma's Martinez became a household when she competed on NBC-TV's The Voice
