5 Things to Do Today: Ten Miles of Bad Road, Tim Hall, Ha Ha Tuesday, Northern movie night ...

Catch Ten Miles of Bad Road tonight at The New Frontier.

TUESDAY, DEC. 28 >>>

1. Tuesday night rock shows are the things memories are made of. It'll be hard to go wrong tonight at The New Frontier Lounge, when local favorites Ten Miles of Bad Road bust out the punk-spliced alt-country. Added bonus: It's Justin's birthday.

2. While we're talking about local favorites, it's worth mentioning that Tim Hall will be at the Summit Pub in Puyallup tonight. If a Tuesday night at the Summit Pub doesn't scream for some top-notch blues - the kind Hall is known to provide - we don't know what does.

3. Be honest. Christmas with your parents didn't go well. There's a reason you hate them. Shake off some of that anger tonight at Jazzbones during Ha Ha Tuesday - as always, hosted by Ralph Porter. Tonight's headliner is James Heneghen, and also features comic Ed Rubin.

4. Watch a rare Tuesday night NFL game- the first since 1946 - when the Eagles take on the Vikings tonight. Hell, even better, do it at Tacoma's Varsity Grill, or Ram Brewery, or Loose Wheel Bar and Grill.

5. In Olympia, check out the regular Tuesday night movie at Northern. That's all the info we have - but Northern is an all-ages venue you can trust.

On with the show

WHAT I LOOK FOR, PART III >>>

When I watch a play, I take in all the same elements you do - set, costumes, lighting, music, dancing, movement, acting, writing and so on - but I also look deeper. As I said before, I watch for focused creativity and unity, meaning consistency of setting and tone. Here's how those two elements play into the body of a show:

Do the director's choices amplify or detract from the show? Directors are the last members added to the theatrical team, but they can elevate a quality script to an unforgettable experience. Imaginative staging turns lunch money into spectacle. Is every scene played "on the nose," or has it occurred to the cast that some characters may be lying? Is the lighting purely literal? How about the music? Were the only surprises in the show written by the playwright, or did this troupe come up with ways to keep us mentally engaged during quiet moments?

Do all the characters look and act as if they belong in the same play? Is the acting or performance style reasonably consistent from actor to actor? (It'd be weird, for example, if only one member of a Molière cast rapped.) Does the director understand the world of the play, and has he or she helped us absorb it? Do the details make sense? Props are a dead giveaway. (Next time you attend a production of Macbeth, for example, keep an eye on the banquet scene. Table forks weren't used in Scotland until five hundred years after the time of the play.) Do the characters seem comfortable in their costumes? Are those costumes accurate? (Here's another example: Cleopatra VII seldom wore Egyptian clothing. She was Greek and preferred Hellenic togas for all but ceremonial occasions.) Does each background character have a plausible function in his or her fictional world?

With regard to acting, I'm a Meisner guy - I was trained in the largely reactive technique popularized by director and acting teacher Sanford Meisner - so I'd rather watch actors interact with each other than pose for the audience. "Heroic" and "fabulous" bore me. Mugging annoys me. Does each actor understand what he or she is saying? Are they racing through Elizabethan meter in some horrendously misguided attempt to shorten one of Shakespeare's plays, thereby rendering it incomprehensible? Is he or she droning Sophoclean dialogue because some academic scholar said that's the way Oedipus Tyrranus was performed 2,500 years ago? (It probably wasn't, by the way.) Do the lovers have sexual and romantic chemistry? Is the villain inexplicably melodramatic? No one, not even a truly evil person, actually says, "Bwahaha." I've never seen it happen in 42 years, and neither have you. There is such a thing as reality, even in a thriller.

This week's Volcano music section

I Defy will be part of the Hell's Kitchen "Customer Appreciation Night" tonight.

A LOOK AT THE GOODNESS IN STORE IN PRINT & ONLINE >>>

Before we check out for the week, off the celebrate the holidays with family, friends and copious amounts of eggnog and candy canes, here's a look at this week's Volcano music section - on the street and online today.

REV. ADAM MCKINNEY'S BEST LIVE MUSIC MOMENTS OF ‘10

PWRFL POWER: June 11, The Squawk Box

A man and his guitar, sitting in a folding chair. A virtuoso, keeping his head down and doing his job. Those moments when he rises to his feet as the music takes control. You had to be there. - Rev. Adam McKinney

A LOOK BACK: THE YEAR IN TACOMA HIP-HOP

This year, 2010, was a busy year for Tacoma hip-hop music. Many different individual artists and groups released and promoted good music and built their fanbases. However, there was no clear-cut top artist, and therefore I didn't feel compelled to spout 500 words of my own opinion about who had the best 2010. -  Zach Powers

DISARMED TO THE TEETH: CODY FOSTER ON HIS BAND'S BOXING DAY REVENGE

Sunday at The New Frontier Lounge, veteran local hardcore trio Cody Foster's Army will be playing one of their "disarmed" acoustic sets. The early show (starts at 7 p.m.) also includes Looking for Lizards and Rich Bundy, and has a post-holiday wallet-sparing two-for-one entry policy. I caught up with CFA mastermind Cody Foster to find out more about the gig, and his band's plans for the New Year. - Jason Baxter

PLUS: Hell's Kitchen Customer Appreciation Night, Mighty High, Randy Oxford Band

Best live music moments of 2010

Wild Flag at Northern in November definitely made the list ...

MAKING A LIST, CHECKING IT TWICE >>>

The Volcano's own Rev. Adam McKinney is currently hard at work, compiling a list of the best live music moments of 2010 - at least according to him. It's coming along quite nicely, if we do say so ourselves, though you'll have to wait until Thursdsay to see what he's come up with.

Except for this bit, which we stole while McKinney wasn't looking:

WILD FLAG: Nov. 10, Northern

What a joy it was to see the first-ever show from the all-girl, indie rock supergroup that is Wild Flag -- to be so close to Carrie Brownstein that I thought she'd whack me with the neck of her guitar. The band sounded like Wild Flag had been around forever. I wait in anxious anticipation for the day (reportedly in early 2011) when Wild Flag's debut album is released. -Rev. AM

The Wild Flag show at Northern in Olympia McKinney speaks of was, in fact, totally badass. It was also the band's first ever show. A few nights later they plugged in at Portland's Doug Fir, for a frothing, sold-out crowd. The video below is from said Doug Fir performance.

"True Grit" is coming

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS WEEK'S VOLCANO >>>

Christmas time - and Christmas vacation, if you're lucky enough to get one - is a great time for movie watching. It's also a great time to release a movie, if you're a big time studio or famous director - people will be sitting around, trapped with their families, and looking for ways to burn a couple hours as painlessly as possible. It's the perfect storm.

This week, the famed Coen Brothers release their take on the John Wayne classic, True Grit. Early indications are it's pretty good. The Volcano's own Adam McKinney - one of the only remaining local movie critics around - will have a review of the film in this week's paper.

Until then, here's a peak at the trailer, followed by a refresher on the movie that came before it ...

5 Things To Do Today: Mount Eerie, Michael Powers, Broho Anniversary, "Mighty Tacoma" and lots of lights

Michael Powers will be all up in the Marine View Church tonight.

SUNDAY, DEC. 19 >>>

1. Tonight at Northern, Mount Eerie will perform alongside the Hive Dwellers. The show is intended to help raise money for Northern, now nearing its second year of operation. Support an awesome cause; see awesome bands. It's a win - win.

2. Jazz artist Michael Powers plays the Marine View Church tonight at 5 p.m. It's free, and there is no cover.

3. Anniversary at the Broho in Olympia, y'all! Western Hymn, Morgan and Organ Donor provide the tunes.

4. Today would be an awesome day to check out Mighty Tacoma: Photographic Portrait 2010 at the Tacoma Art Museum. Billed as an "interactive celebration and creative exercise in commemoration of Tacoma Art Museum's 75th Anniversary," the show features digital portraits by Tacoma-based artists projected in the gallery and posted on the museum website. The show also includes a photographic survey of the city's neighborhoods, families at the museum, community groups and businesses. And visitors can add their own pictures to the website using Flickr, Facebook and other Internet networks.

5. The moths are on to something. Lights are awesome. Especially holiday lights. Make today the day you check out Zoolights or Fantasy Lights - both South Sound institutions.

5 Things to Do Today: Rocket Records show, A Christmas Story, the Nightgowns, bikes and booze ...

The Nightgowns

SATURDAY, DEC. 18 >>>

1. There's a sweet all-ages show today at Rocket Records on Tacoma's Sixth Ave featuring Rooftop Warrior. As long as you dig rock, this should be one all ages can enjoy.

2. Check out the Click! family flick this morning at the Grand Cinema in Tacoma - a free screening of A Christmas Story. Will Ralphie shoot his eye out this year? Find out in style, not just sitting on your couch watching TBS.

3. The Nightgowns play tonight at the New Frontier. Anyone paying attention knows this will be awesome.

4. Like bikes? Like booze? Check out this hot piece of action - the Troll Crank Holly Jolly Bicycle Booze Cruise.

5. Spend time checking out photos from the Third Thursday Art Bus - which was in full effect this week. Pay special attention to Buddy the elf. He looks much like Volcano publisher Ron Swarner, no? Surely just a coincidence ...

5 Things To Do Today: The Hard Way CD release, "Handel's Messiah," Rad Santa Party, Gruv Lounge model search ...

Guess which event below matches this photo?

FRIDAY, DEC. 17, 2010 >>>

1. Oly's The Hard Way will celebrate the release of the band's new record, Tell Me When You Can't Breathe, tonight at McCoy's Tavern. The Volcano's Nikki Talotta says it'll be awesome - and we tend to believe her.

2. Handel's Messiah returns to Tacoma via the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra tonight inside the Pantages Theater. With guests like conductor Geoffrey Boers, soprano Denise Lees and the entire Tacoma Symphony Chorus (among others), this seasonal favorite seems sure to hit the mark. A "new slate of soloists" is promised ... only upping the excitement factor.

3. Check out Olympia Family Theater's take on Little Women tonight at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts. It comes recommended.

4. The Viceroy Art Gallery hosts a Rad Santa Party beginning at 8 p.m. featuring live music from The Rotten Wreaths (Dana Turner of Green Apple Quick Step, 3DS&M and John Sackett of The Stinky Pinkys) and music by DJ Johnny Falcon.

5. We don't make this stuff up - we just report it. Here's what they're saying about the Bikini Model Show Tryouts tonight at Gruv Lounge in Tacoma: "What Happens Under the Mistletoe, Stays Under the Mistletoe"! Models wearing glittery bikini's, Showcase Bikini line by Private Designer, with Dj Omar Mashups, photographers and videographers. To be added to the list, Text names to (253) 241-3229."

This week's Volcano music section

KEG kicks out the jams

A TASTE OF WHAT'S IN STORE IN PRINT & ONLINE >>>

Bobble Tiki may have gone away again this holiday season - for his annual, involuntary, intervention-induced twelve days of Christmas at Schick Shadel (he's stayed so many times, they give him two days free) - but that doesn't mean the Volcano's music section is empty this week. Quite the contrary. Here's a look at all the goodness in store in print and online ...

The Shivas and My Friend Wallis

"When we first started, we played a lot of old blues songs," says Jared Wait-Molyneux of the Shivas. "We were just a bunch of high school kids who liked Cream and, you know, old '60s blues bands."

Mount Eerie

On "Where?," Track One of Mount Eerie's latest release, Song Islands Vol. 2, renowned Washington musician Phil Elverum sings, "Mt. Eerie is playing tonight / where is the concert, and will it be all-ages?" Despite the somber mood set by his sparse guitar and plaintive overdubbed vocals, the song seems to wink at the listener, nudging them in the ribs as if to say, "Of course the show is all-ages." - Jason Baxter

KEG
Oh, folks. Are you ready for something absolutely ridiculous? Look no further than KEG. - Rev. Adam McKinney
