Bollywood Prom Recap: King, queen and ears ring

Getting their Mumbai on at Sanford and Son Saturday night. Photography by Steve Dunkelberger

MUMBAI MEETS DISCO >>>

Sanford and Son Antiques received a big slap of fabulous for its adult prom Saturday night. Gigantic red, pink, silver, gold and black flowers clung to ceiling and walls amid colorful lighting and shiny metallic streamers as the store's library was transformed into a Bollywood movie set, the theme for the annual fundraiser this year benefiting the Companion Animal Rescue Society.

The costumes matched the décor. Lovely ladies attending went all out East Indian in saris, churidar, kurti pants, and belly dancing outfits in lace, chiffon and satin with gems and bells and teasingly draped sheer silks and scarves while others went as high-glam as possible in red carpet worthy gowns and skyscraper highs. Men wore suits, tuxedos and traditional kurtas and sherwanis to the dance party.

And then there was the food: horsd'oeuvres had an Indian slant with cucumber and lemon, and beet yogurt salads, hummus and pita, and seriously tasty Indian meatballs courtesy of Dan Briggs. Refreshing teas from Mad Hat Tea Company, Naughty Nellie and other tasty beers, glasses of Arrogant Bastard, Estrella and Flying Fish wines went down like water.

Tacoma's favorite garage band Girl Trouble kicked the night off to a roaring start. Partygoers danced till they were sweaty and the Library almost tropically humid. Band Si Si Si was welcomed back for a second year delivering ear-piercing and overly loud surf punk and pop tunes. Prom goers had just enough liquid merriment to make it through the set though some were looking a little tired of the volume. The second Si Si Si finished, memorable dance hits "I Will Survive," "Dancing Queen," "Billie Jean" and "YMCA," which had hilarious crowd participation, were merely a handful of the fun songs played by DJ Infinity above the black and white checkered dance floor.

DJ Infinity also acted as master of ceremonies until it was time for prom committee member Donna Herren, who looked smashing in a gold tube dress, to take the mic and reveal the year's theme winners. Sanford and Son owner Alan Gorsuch was crowned prom king and surprisingly not his wife, Cheryl, but Michelle Smith of Fleur de Lis was prom queen - as well as picking up title of Most Imaginative Female costume. Male Best Dressed and Most Imaginative Male costume saw a two and three way tie. People also voted for a giant black and white cow used in the photo backdrop for Female Best Dressed.

DJ Infinity reinvigorated the crowd after titles were awarded with Michael Jackson's P.Y.T. and other '80s pop songs. Giddy laughter floated above the smiling dancing crowd as the evening wore to a happily exhausted end.

The great J. Irvin Dally

TUESDAY, SEPT. 14, 2010 >>>

1. Pitchfork's Altered Zones claims musician J. Irvin Dally is "an artist of abnormal brilliance, as garrulous and uncouth as the title of his EP, Despistado, would have you believe." He and Michael J. Saalman perform at 10 p.m. inside Le Voyeur in Olympia. Go see for yourself.

2. In 2009 the Serum Run '25 Expedition set out to retrace the original 1925 route across Alaska to deliver lifesaving antitoxin by dog teams to Diphtheria stricken Nome. What he did not anticipate was the worst Alaskan winter in decades. 3. King's Books has gathered a panel of book club experts who will talk about both their new favorites and overlooked page-turners at 7 p.m. Panelists are Lisa Oldoski, Lisa Bitney and Elise DeGuiseppi from Pierce County Library and Kelda Vath and Rhonda Kristoff from Tacoma Public Library.

5 Things To Do: Rhombus, Red Wolf Woods at zoo, barstool bingo, Rockaraoke ...

Rhombus

MONDAY, SEPT. 6, 2010 >>>

1. Rhombus is a punk band with absurdist tendencies. They have a hard-bitten sound that mixes with silliness in a way that reminds us of early Ween, when every heavy metal anthem was tempered with some under-the-counter chemical to form a queasy mélange. Check them out at 8 p.m. inside The Den @urbanXchange.

2. The Red Wolf Woods hillside exhibit is now open at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium with activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., keeper talks at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and a Howl-A-Thon for kids at 1:30 p.m.

Glaude birthday tidings

Donald Glaude

DONALD GLAUDE IS IN TOWN TOMORROW >>>

Lakewood's Donald Glaude(he now lives in Los Angeles) was playing gigs in the South Sound long before clubs in Miami, New York and Europe. The Lakes High School graduate earned his national rep as an elite, cutting-edge house DJ at underground warehouse raves during the late ‘80s in Western Washington. Playing a highly infectious blend of house and breaks, Glaude is an all-around entertainer rather than a typical stoic spinner: He screams, he pumps his fists and invites the ladies to dance around his decks. Such antics set Glaude's show apart from those of his peers.

Tomorrow night at Jazzbones, Glaude spins with DJ Omar during a birthday party for Calvin Murphy, kingpin of Oceans Grooves DJ conglomerate in Tacoma. It's open to the public.

Calvin's Birthday Party

Tuesday, Aug. 24, 10 p.m., $5
