Scanning the newspapers and television Bobble Tiki’s spring has sprung over our popular culture that permits only the smallest debris of originality to poke through and an almost complete lack of self-awareness as a nation. So Bobble Tiki researched what our nation did the last time all this was going on â€" heavy metal, baby. Penelope Spheeris' 1988 documentary “Decline of the Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years†concerns itself with the emerging Los Angeles punk scene of the late '70s and early '80s, and has taken a left upper cut and body blows for focusing too, er, heavily on the glam aspect of the metal scene. Not from Bobble Tiki. With the rise of dense underground metal â€" Mastodon, High on Fire â€" it might be more important than ever to look at glam. Bobble Tiki needs to escape. He’s disenchanted with the real word. Spheeris realizes that escapism has always been the driving force behind metal â€" makeup, leotards and party lyrics.
Tonight, escape into the world of glam. Olympia’s Le Voyeur club will screen the film at 9 p.m. for free. It was a worthwhile attempt in 1988 and it still is now. â€" Bobble Tiki
