It was a Devo fan’s dream. The Akron, Ohio, quintet entertained a Puyallup Fair crowd last night showing a few old robotic moves, a fantastic light show and sounding like they haven’t skipped a beat.
“They still rock pretty damn good for some gray haired geezers," says Gregory Halstead, a huge Devo fan from Puyallup who possess several Devo import albums from Korean. "It was a great concert.â€
Although sporting a few extra pounds since their formation in 1972, the songs were played virtually note for note as the studio releases.
They hit the stage in their yellow radioactive suits from the Duty Now for the Future album with the red flower pot hats from Freedom of Choice album. Singer Mark Motherbaugh later ripped the suits off his fellow bandmates during “Uncontrollable Urge†to reveal black T-shirts, black shorts and white knee pads underneath.
Booji Boy (Motherbaugh in an appropriately fatter latex face than the original) appeared for the concert finale, “Beautiful World.â€
The song line last night:
Good Thing
Going Under
Peek a Boo
Girl U Want
Whip It
Secret Agent Man
Satisfaction
Uncontrollable Urge
Mongoloid
Blockhead
Jocko Homo (Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo)
Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA
Gates of Steel
(Short intermission) Devo Corporate Anthem
Freedom of Choice
Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy
Beautiful World (featuring Booji Boy)
Appropriately I ended the night watching another band in costume. Splendid Vengeance took the Hell's Kitchen stage in full "Spinal Tap"-like garb with special guest The Wizard (Ryan Loiselle) on Theremin. Magical.
Mos Generator warmed the Kitchen crowd like it was 1972. These guys freaking rock. â€" Brad Allen
