Functional Fashion Rock Show held in Tacoma

Functionfashionone It’s probably rare that when someone uses the phrase “packed in like sardines” that it is actually a true description of Friday night’s Functional Fashion Rock Show that people literally crammed against one another. There wasn’t any room to open the door. The people outside in line grew anxious.

Functionfashiontwo Mike Jolly and Alex Tapia, the main creative minds behind this fusion of music, performance, fashion and art held in a tiny space in downtown Tacoma.  The two started work on the project more than three months back when the weather was warm and we were still waiting for summer to hit. Jolly and Tapia have worked on other projects in the past and were in the band Sincerely Elvis until Alex moved to Bellingham for school. Sincerely Elvis disbanded and drummer Jolly enjoyed a stint with Please Give Blood until two of their band members migrated to Seattle and Please Give Blood was no more.

This is the first project the multi-talented artists collaborated on since Sincerely Elvis’ demise. Jolly focused more on designing the clothes for the models while guitarist Tapia laid down the music. Revisions, practices, changes and much progress later, they presented the Functional Fashion Rock Show.

Functionfashionfour Functionfashionfive The production was, from start to finish and from angles, dreamed up to be a multi-faceted visually stimulating phenomenon.

“We did everything…from writing all of the music, all of the lyrics, designing all of the clothes and looks, the stage, and then we got the models to sing the songs,” explains Jolly.

The models were a veritable who’s who in the Tacoma area art/music scene. Shaking their hips, gripping the mic, and letting the vocals flow with serious rawness would have Mick Jagger (an original stage stalker) grinning and envious of the youthful exuberance. To say these lovelies where showing off their many talents is a severe understatement. I enjoyed these models rather than the typical stiff faced stoic models that prance up and down a runway wearing clothes real people probably aren’t buying.

Jolly and Tapia’s designs are unusual, yes, but still practical and of course, functional. Take the blue and white hoodie Alex designed for model Daniel Blue â€" it’s functional, eye-catching and made for the real world

Yes, you still have to be a bit on the daring side of fashion for these looks, but not by much. Stephanie Johnson’s head to toe ensemble by Mike Jolly melded bright blue with black in designs that had onlookers riveted. The skirt was hot, hot, hot. Meoooww!

Functionfashionthree Of note, Jolly also designed Maria’s distressed and reconstructed black, white and cream long sleeve shirt, Byron Betts’s brown, cream and black zip vest with exaggerated collar as well as crafting his own look.

Poster art for the Functional Fashion Rock Show was created by Christopher Jensen of PHOTOG Kristopher Jensen of Photogy Design. â€" Jennifer Johnson

Tour of Urban Living
I can’t wait to peek inside Tacoma’s swank condominiums during today’s Tour of Urban Living, a self-guided tour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In last year’s tour, I remember having a light bulb “Aha!” moment watching the occupants of the top floor of a million-dollar condo project.

Together, the couple entered the elevator with their two Scottish terriers, a carrier with six bottles of wine, and several bags of groceries.

Right then and there, I was sold on condo lifestyle. I could see myself as an empty nester with two lap dogs I’d bestow impossibly clever names upon, bringing up my gourmet fare to prepare and savor in my gourmet kitchen kitted out with Gaggenau and Viking appliances while sipping on an amazing vintage.

GYPSY FOLK
Jason Webley
Diving into gypsy artist Jason Webely’s world, I found jazz flavors of Django Reinhardt, a sincerity of Tom Waits and a reflective vocal style akin to Ray Davies.

To date, Webely has recorded five solo discs. Each one is unique and a wildly entertaining listen as he cross-breeds genres and interjects his yearning accordion into the mix. Rather than penning the obvious cliché love songs, Webley digs a bit deeper for a more introspective take on things. His latest, The Cost of Living, is another great effort by the Seattle-based artist. â€" Tony Engelhart

Broken News: Porn at The Spar

Brokensparporn Brunch diners at The Spar were shocked today when an employee grabbed the TV remote and replace the Redskins vs. Packers football game with porn.

"Alright! Now we're talking," yelled a patron with a mouthful of Mediterranean omelet, today's special at The Spar.

At noon, the employee switched from the game to Pay-Per-View selecting "Sex Starved Prison Girls." Shockingly, he selected the buy option.  Suddenly the restaurant watched a prison hottie in a white halter top disrobe. The screening lasted 30 seconds.

The Spar hasn't gone on record whether the FCC was alerted.  The fate of the employee is also a mystery.  â€" Suzy Stump

After what seemed like an endless tattoo contest at Hell's Kitchen last night The Dirty Birds from Olympia rocked the crowd.  Here are a few shots from the show.  In this reporter's humble opinion Tim Brown is one of the best bassists around.  He has mad skills similar to John Entwistle. â€" Brad Allen

Volcanoblastart POP PUNK
Fierce Perm
Fierce Perm are two hits of pop, and one of punk-spliced grunge. A female-led assault of garage, Fierce Perm is aided by its feminine nature, but held together by the adhesive quality of its endearing sloppiness. According to www.myspace.com/fierceperm:

“There are a wide variety of methods to listen to Fierce Perm. The most popular include the joint, the blunt, the bong, the pipe (more commonly called a ‘bowl’ or ‘piece’), the shotgun, the chillum, the deffy, the spot and the one-hitter.”

Good to know.

The Broho is the best spot in Oly. Period. A Fierce Perm should just make it that much cooler. â€" Matt Driscoll

Frasca favorites
Childhood’s End Gallery in Olympia is featuring two artists and one husband and wife collaborative team this month: Marilyn Frasca, Betty Moynahan, and John and Robin Gamaelius.

Frasca is the real artist in this show. I’ve seen a few Frasca shows over the past two decades, mostly at Childhood’s End, and I think this may be the best yet. She’s showing around a dozen monotype and pastel drawings of figures and animals that look vaguely mythological. It is not at all clear what these humans and animals are doing, but they clearly seem to get along, somewhat like the creatures in a Henri Rousseau painting. The mythological look comes from the fact that some of the animals are proportionally much larger than life and some have masklike faces. They are mythlike, but they are not myths. â€" Alec Clayton

Getting all Thai-ed up in anticipation

I can’t wait for Nov. 1.

Last night I was given a tour inside the newest addition to the Indochine family â€" Indochine on Pearl.

I was amazed.

The previous restaurant there, Sar’s, was decidedly uninspiring, from an interior standpoint.
Hong Ngove and her husband Sean Yean have changed that around, and then some.

A modern-cool water feature greets you on entry to the intimate space; you’re standing under the eaves of a traditional Thai building at that point. As you walk about three feet further, you can look up to see all the intricate detailing of the architectural feature, or down, to see slate-colored tile with detailed inset patterns.  Directly in front, a wall hides the hall to the restrooms, and on that wall, a fireplace cozies up the space made more intimate with a warm, cinnamon-toned paint, contrasted with deep chocolate accents of wood and paint on the exposed ceiling, which in the days of Sar’s, had been a suspended T-Bar acoustical ceiling.

And the ceiling isn’t the only way the couple have modified the feeling of the space: there’s also a side dining area, separated by gorgeous iron work, the eave façade, and opulent fabrics and a step up; from the tile, the surface changes to a warm wood with a tile accent.

The kitchen is also a spacious and clean thing of beauty; Yean and Ng have completely modified that, as well.

Right now, they say they’re awaiting permits for alcohol, and finalizing menu details. They say it’ll be similar to the menu at their Fircrest location.

All I can say is, satay, yay!  Bring… it…on! â€" Jessica Corey-Butler
