OPEN MIKE
Ancient Victorys Open Mike
Ancient Victorys. What does it mean?
Here’s what you are thinking: Nerdy Dungeons and Dragons dreamscape of mythical beings: Hoof-ed creatures, Octises, and Whysps all doing battle with the roll of my many-sided die.
Here is what it really is: In the ’60s Chris Lunn, a folk blues musician, began a run of 30 years of unique, acoustic, listening Victory Music open mikes that started in Palo Alto, Calif., and moved to Court C in Tacoma in 1969. It spawned the great folk musicians of the Northwest. Great debates, and home-cooked brownies, too. Jim Page, Tim Noah, Eric Eshelman and other notable folkies emerged with crowns. Lousy musicians left with encouraged smiles. Lunn moved the musical farm league to the Antique Sandwich Company in the ’80s. Awesome sandwiches. Huge crowds. Lunn walked away when grunge hit town.
Lunn has dusted off the cobwebs and revives the open mikes under the Ancient Victorys guise. The talented ancients returned, including national acts. Comfort. Old things rule. â€" Suzy Stump

ROCK
Sugarcane Mutiny
Each time I've seen Sugarcane Mutiny they've reminded me of the Smithereens if Pat DiNizio and crew ran a dilapidated gas station with a black and white TV in the office. This Seattle quartet plays rootsy, jangly pop with an emphasis on songs as opposed to the requisite instruments and haircuts. Don't get me wrong, these cats look and sound classic, I just don't think it's their top priority.
These seasoned cats found a common thread â€" smart songwriting, stringent, catchy melodies and a dose of twang â€" on their four-song, self-titled CD that is spinning right now next to my black and white TV. â€" Brad Allen
