Wow's? Wow!

NATASHA GORBACHEV: WOW'S TO CLOSE? >>>

Word on the T-Town street says that Wow's Etc. will be closing tomorrow.

If that is indeed true, I'm quite sad because for years I've contended that Wow's really does have the best breakfast in town.

I've been such a jerk because I haven't been there lately to take care of my usual where my homies and I get a bottle for mimosas, pumping tons of money in the juke box ("Fat Bottomed Girls"), while enjoying a heaping breakfast, the Bloody Mary bar, and the fun service from local greats including Liz.

Unfortunately, I don't know the owner of Wow's to find out whether this rumored closing is indeed true.

Dear Tacoma, can anyone deny or confirm this potentially sad news?

Either way, I'm heading in this morning for my bacon and eggs just in case I might never get the chance to again.

Olympia Film Festival: Do look back

CHRISTOPHER WOOD: OFF DAY 4 â€" FREE SHORTS >>>

OFF-day-4 I know this year the Olympia Film Festival wanted a step back into the past. I didn’t know the event had actually made time halt on Fifth Avenue. The scene in front of Capitol Theater today looked just as it did last Friday â€" construction workers continuing to tinker over a darkened marquee.

The crack in the temporal continuum deepened with the lineup of shorts inside. The pastiche patchwork assembled instills equal parts nostalgia and embarrassment for bygone Americana. John Clark’s Video Art received inspiration from the Reagan Era’s greatest artistic contribution â€" the music video for A-Ha’s “Take on Me.” The goofy story follows a doodler who gets sucked into a frightening world where neon and mousse (hair, not chocolate) reign supreme.
Case Histories in Psychotherapy â€" Richard Part II resurrects an '80s relic, Robert Stack, and finally lays to rest that age-old question of whether he did anything besides Unsolved Mysteries.

He did.

Even the cast from Sesame Street makes an appearance. Erica Eaton’s funny narration in Network TV recounts a childhood absorbing PBS’s egalitarian world view. The boob tube even provided her with her first love â€" Laura from Little House on the Prairie. As Eaton explains in the film’s terrific closing line, "Network TV made me a lesbian.”

Zachary Iannazzi’s To Be Regained flings us into the '60s; in this period the government first implemented plans to reintroduce Atlantic salmon into the Connecticut River. Iannazzi, a self-described “avant-documentarian,” combines journalism and experimental techniques to produce some pretty striking images.

NuWa Dreams was the evening’s highlight, a lavish, heavenly portrait of a Chinese creation tale. Though shot literally in the filmmakers’ backyard, the piece emits an otherworldly aura. Directors Hirsh and Jenny Diamant cast their daughter Larissa as the lead, and David McCarthy composed the score. “It’s an important story for our times,” says Russian-born Hirsh. “It’s the story of…how creation kind of goes out of whack.”

Maybe the past deserves another look-see.

All Freakin’ Night

BOBBLE TIKI: OFF UNTIL THE BREAK OF DAWN >>>

Screamers The late-night mini-fest of blood-injected spazzmatic anti-cinema All Freakin' Night is sure to cause at least one of Bobble Tiki’s major organs to fail, screens Saturday night as part of the Olympia Film Festival.  Beginning at midnight and running through early morning Sunday, “Invaders From Mars,” “House By The Cemetery,” “Tokyo Gore Police,” “Nightmare In A Damaged Brain,” and “Screamers” will flicker with enough carnage to terrify, not just sicken.

Hosts Dave “Of The Dead” Beacham and Josh “The Cannibal Eater” Anderson will pass out enough coffee to keep your head spinning â€" completely around.  Wedged between the movies will be a gruesome costume, horror scream and maniacal laugh contests with plenty of putrid prizes.

[Capitol Theater, Saturday, Nov. 15, midnight, $10-$15, Capitol Theater, 206 E. Fifth Ave., 360.754.6670]

Toilet Tales: blue poop bags

STEPH DEROSA: I GOT DISTRACTED THIS WEEK >>>

Blue-bags I'm a snobby camper. I dig RVs with private showers. If I do happen to tent, I prefer VIP camping with fresh, clean potties. Yeah, I could go poop in the woods, but something about bagging it up and carrying it away leaves me nauseated and repulsed.

What the fuck is up with blue bags? They make dog poop bags and dirty diaper bags blue. Is that the international sign for poop is in here? Wait¬" isn't the Democratic party represented by the color blue as well? (Zing!)*

I ponder this subject on the Weekly Volcano's Web site in the Fix section.

Miller time

SUZY STUMP: CHILDREN OF WINTER >>>

Alta-6x9-300 If it’s November, it must be Warren Miller time. Again. Since before Ike was president, Miller has been making, more or less, annual films dedicated to the exhilaration of all things vertical and snowy. The fact that he’s still doing it â€" though the actual director’s reins have been handed to successors, including his son, Kurt â€" suggests that he’s doing something right for his target audience. It’s winter sports porn for me.  I soak in every money shot.  For the 59th time a Miller film tours the nation, and this time it’s all about the Children of Winter.  Ski and snowboard athletes tackle the world, including Japan, Austria, and Iceland.

[Washington Center, Nov. 13 8 p.m., Nov. 14 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., $16.50-$17.50, 512 Washington St. S.E., Olympia, 360.753.8586]

[Pantages Theater, Nov. 15 6 and 9 p.m., $20, 901 Broadway, Tacoma, 253.591.5894]
