A worthy Sip

ANNOUNCER: THE BOYS VISIT SIP IN GIG HARBOR >>>

Restaurant-review-article-8 Sip Restaurant and Wine Bar opened in Gig Harbor’s slick new Uptown shopping village in the spring and has been thriving like well watered wild flowers ever since.  Utilizing organic, locally sourced products for lunch and dinner service when possible, Sip’s creators are eco-conscious as well as growth oriented. The original Sip in Issaquah and this second Sip location will be joined by a third in Seattle this winter. Pre-selected wine flights, wines by the half and full glass or bottle leave plenty of room to tailor a dining experience or wine sampling evening exactly as desired. Let’s see if the boys can behave at the sophisticated Napa Valley-style eatery.

General Wojack to drop two

JOSE S. GUTIERREZ JR: TWO, TWO, TWO ON THE SAME DAY >>>

Wojack August is a hot month and that is precisely why Tacoma’s Wojack of Criminal Nation intends to turn the heat up a bit more with two electricity-charged, politically-laced albums dropping on the same day.

On Aug. 25, General Wojack will drop I Am Mark Womack and War Musik on the same day.  The Pacific Northwest Hip-Hop pioneer has been patiently waiting to deliver these two albums for almost two years and says that they are his best works.

I Am Mark Womack and War Musik will be available online and in-stores Aug. 25.

Matador: Why we go

JAKE AND JASON DE PAUL: TEQUILA BAR WITH DELICIOUS FOOD >>>

Matador If you like it hot, and we all know that you do, Matador in Tacoma delivers food to the table primed and ready to sear the insides of your mouth. They put the wails in jalapeño at this downtown corner hot spot where long thick curtains at the entrance muffle your screams to the outside.

Why We Go: The ambiance is spectacular. It's sexy. It's spicy. It's beauty on the walls and holding drinks. It's the perfect first date spot or a rich field on a weekend night. Next, this flirtatious high-end Tex Mex restaurant offers more than 75 different types of tequila from all over the globe. Add intelligent bartenders who sling connoisseur phrases such as "hints of banana" and "spicy alcohol finish" without sounding like complete tools with table service that doesn't to break land speed records, but kills with kindness, and you have the perfect experience.

What We Eat: The braised carnitas are a slice of mild heaven.  Slow cooked with orange, allspice, cinnamon and bay leaves and served with black beans, rice, sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo, the pork shoulder arrived tender and meaty with nice accents of fat and a side of flour tortillas. The chorizo verde enchiladas are rich and gooey sporting a deep spiciness to the thick cream sauce.

What We'd Change: A couple of captain's list worthy wine choices wouldn't hurt. That's about it. Well, maybe cushions on the hard wood seating surfaces, but that might be a genetic issue with us.

Kids can visit TAM for free

MICHAEL SWAN: SCREW THE OLD FOLKS >>>

This just arrived at the Weekly Volcano World Headquarters:

Tacoma, Wash. - Anyone under 18 can go to Tacoma Art Museum free Aug. 18-30.

Things to do at the museum:

  • See five different art exhibitions
  • Make art in the Open Art Studio
  • Learn more about art in the Art Resource Center
“We want young people in our community to be exposed to the arts,” said Paula McArdle, director of education and audience development. “We’d love to see teenagers and families take advantage of this affordable, educational activity as the summer winds down.”

This special free admission offer is made possible by generous contributions from Tacoma Art Museum donors.

Current Tacoma Art Museum exhibitions are:

  • Ornament as Art: Avant-Garde Jewelry from the Helen Williams
  • Drutt Collection
  • Loud Bones: The Jewelry of Nancy Worden
  • 2009 Neddy Artist Fellowship
  • Speaking Parts: Conversations Between Works in the Collection
  • Dale Chihuly Permanent Collection

Ornament at Art and Loud Bones showcase studio art jewelry. The Drutt Collection is considered one of the best collections of studio art jewelry in the world. Nancy Worden is a Northwest artist known for the stories she tells through her art.

“As young people look at these exhibitions in particular, they’ll see a wide variety of things art can be made of,” McArdle said. “We hope they’ll also think about questions like what is art, and how and why do we wear jewelry?”

They Live tonight

PAUL SCHRAG: THEY LIVE HIP-HOP EVENT TONIGHT AT HELL'S KITCHEN >>>

Revengers "They Live," Tacoma.

The people that brought you Fresh Blends, a hip-hop semi-weekly at Hell’s Kitchen, are back. Fresh Blends, R.I.P., went the way a number of hip-hop weeklies have gone in Tacoma. It went away, which sucks. But Hell’s Kitchen still has room on its roster for a hip-hop show or two apparently.

Yes. "They live."

Rowdy Roddy Piper isn’t going to be able to save anyone from the likes of Evergreen One, Todd Sykes, Hella Dope or the Revengers, even with a pair of magic Locs and a shotgun.

Add the magic of a little hip-hop diversity, and guest hosting by the one and only Josh Rizeberg, and you’ve got a show.

[Hell’s Kitchen, with Evergreen One, Todd Sykes, Hella Dope, The Revengers, Friday, Aug. 14, 9 p.m., $5, 3829 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 253.759.6003]
