Library wants you to get a job!

BOBBLE TIKI: PIERCE COUNTY LIBRARY RULES >>>

Didn't you already just know? Didn't you already sort of see it coming?

That is to say, didn't millions of us already sense, deeper down, with all this mad orgasm of technology, all this incredible ability to stay in constant touch, and how you can travel almost nowhere in the world save for remote parts of Orting where you cannot be tracked or e-mailed or download an app â€" didn't you know that the library would always have your back by keeping up with the technology and maintain its mission of giving you stuff for free?

Yeah, Bobble Tiki didn’t know, either.

Pierce County Library System announces a free career assistance service, in cooperation with Resume Maker:

People may access the Resume Maker service free with a current Pierce County Library card through the Library’s Web site, search site: resume maker. People may also use the service by using public computers for free at Pierce County Libraries.

The service offers breakthrough technology in three areas: resumes and letters, interviews and salary, and job search tools. Certified professional career counselors developed the Resume Maker software.

Check it out here, right now, on your phone, as you float down the Green River on your new kickass raft with your best friend Chuck while drinking Pabst.

Urban Art Festival review

LAURA EKLUND: ENJOYED SATURDAY'S FEST WITHOUT HAULING STUFF AROUND >>>

Editor’s note: Laura Eklund took a year off from Tacoma’s Urban Art Festival’s organizational duties. A founding member, a busy schedule this year forced her to watch Saturday's festivities from the sidelines as South Sounders enjoyed classic cars, art, music, food, beer and more under the hot, baking sun.

Well almost, Team UAF convinced Eklund to stilt walk for a while.

Anyway, Eklund shares a few thoughts from Saturday’s Urban Art festival for Spew:

Urban Art Festival returned this year as “Iron vs. Art” taking on a whole new life. Completely reinvented it became the combination of urban arts and hot rods.

With a new location on South Jefferson in front of The Swiss and encumbering the neighboring Diamond parking lot, this festival thrived Saturday.

As I entered the event Saturday, I ran into a bamboo-laden mainstage with two 8-foot-tall tiki gods. On said stage I dug the Hard Money Saints, KJ Sawka, Vicci Martinez and Life Cycle. Apparently, so did The Swiss’s insanely massive beer garden as the attendees got their dance on.

Down toward 21st Street beautiful art and handmade goods vendors lined both sides of the street.

Tacoma’s tots were busy at the Creation Station kid’s area thanks to Nicole King.

Half way down the street was the MLKBallet stage where unique performance pieces could be seen throughout the day.

Cars? Yup, the classic hot rod show â€" courtesy of Lifters Car Club â€" consumed the Diamond parking lot.

While drooling over the glistening autos I could hear the DJ Stage. As if out of a movie set, designer Charlie Hill took the DJ Stage to Hollywood status with an amazing scrap metal junkyard décor.

Close to the DJ stage was Al’s Brewing Co. beer garden at the end of the parking lot. Serving Jell-O shots, Lauren Ballwebers sangria and, of course, beer, festival goers moved to the beats of Deron “Suga” Jones, Bobby Galaxy and others.

It was freakin’ awesome to find misty spray bottles on all the tables in the beer garden.

The ridiculously scorching weather didn't keep people away from the smokin’ hot event. Nice job Urban Art Festival crew!

Advertising on CDs: Normally, we would rather stay home and remove our own pubic hair with a roll of masking tape than listen to Mariah Carey. However, Billboard reports that her new CD, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, which drops Sept. 15, will carry advertising. According to Billboard, “The first deal, created for the Mariah Carey release Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel on Sept. 15, is a 34-page co-production with Elle magazine that includes lifestyle ads from Elizabeth Arden, Angel Champagne, Carmen Steffens, Le Métier de Beauté and the Bahamas Board of Tourism. Providing the experiment goes well, the label is eyeing bigger brand deals for booklets of CDs by Rihanna, Bon Jovi, Kanye West and other artists.” Read the full story here.

Early Sunday love

MICHAEL SWAN: RANT LINE >>>

The Weekly Volcano World Headquarters voicemail received a call at 4:15 a.m. Sunday from a gentleman claiming Bob's Java Jive doesn't have crappy beer â€" as we lovingly suggested in the Best Of Tacoma 2009 issue.

While the gentleman ranted, there was swanky sounding music in the background â€" adult movie swanky.

Classic.

We love early morning calls. Keep them coming to 253.584.1212.

P.S. Remember our Best of Tacoma 2009 will post to our Web site early Thursday morning.

Tacoma bands practice here

MATT DRISCOLL: WEEKLY VOLCANO COVER STORY PREVIEW >>>

It's a dungeon. It's an old car museum. It's the epicenter of Tacoma's indie music scene.

In this week's issue of the Weekly Volcano, which will hit streets on Thursday, Aug. 6, ace reporter Mark Thomas Deming ventures inside the dusty basement below Sharp & Sons USA of Yesterday Motors (on the corner of Sixth and St. Helens, across from Maxwell's Speakeasy), which also happens to be, quite possibly, the most happening little nook that Tacoma's local music scene has to offer. Much of the music you come to hear in Tacoma's clubs, not to mention read about in the Weekly Volcano and Spew, is conceived in this small and unassuming space. It's the uterus of T-town rock.

While on assignment, Deming was able to shoot a couple videos of one of the bands that rehearse in this infamous space â€" The Drug Purse. To whet your appetite for Thursday's cover story, today we share those videos with you. Here's what it looks like when The Drug Purse practices.

Shakabrah Java open mic tonight

SUZY STUMP: HEY, IT’S MONDAY! >>>

Monday, that most put-upon of weekdays, has gotten a bad rap. Yeah, going back to the office stinks, but the first day of the week also happens to be the best one for a good, invigorating talk.

Think about it: You’re still fresh from your weekend, and you haven’t yet had your joie de vivre trounced by the working week.

Lucky for you, Shakabrah Java offers Monday open mic night, which features whatever you want to perform: music, poetry, tap dance. The event is free, open to everyone and pretty damn cool, if you ask Spew (and really, by reading this, you are asking us).

[Shakabrah Java, Mondays, 5 p.m., free, 2618 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 253.572.2787]
