SHOPPING CART BEAT >>>
Megan Barney, an University of Washington-Tacoma student/detective - who made the Dean's list (woo hoo!) - sent us a lovely letter:
Dear Editor,
A few weeks ago I noticed an interesting sticker affixed to a post in front of the University of Washington-Tacoma campus. The sticker was yellow and depicted a shopping cart with the words "Don't Buy It". I was curious, but didn't think much of it. That is, I didn't think much of it until these carts started popping up all over town--on McDonald's billboards, the old Hell's Kitchen sign, painted on a support column of the 705, on Schuster shortly before Old Town, near the Safeway on Pearl, etc. The more I saw the more curious I became, and I was not alone. No one that I talked to had a clue what the message was behind the carts. Did it have something to do with the ever-present rumors about a downtown grocery? Was it related to recent talk about food carts? Even local graffiti artists were in the dark. Seeing no mention of the carts in the Volcano, I did some digging. It turns out that the carts have nothing to do with being anti-grocery or anti-food cart. They are the product of Don't Buy It Clothing, a few locals who are anti-commercial and selling t-shirts to prove it. Their website, complete with mission statement and shop, can be found at www.dontbuyitclothing.com. I thought other confused Tacomans might appreciate having this mystery explained.
Thanks for the awesome detective work Megan. Your discovery forces the Weekly Volcano to rethink our "T-town Troubled Sweater Vest" line that we intend to market to distressed jeans owners.

So, now that we know who has been pasting these things all over town, do you think the police will do anything about it if we file a report? It took all of about two minutes to find the home address of the "owner" of the company. I for one would like to see him cited for vandalism.
Scott said on May. 18, 2010 at 6:34pm
Megan: Do you think that Don't Buy It Clothing is anti-commercial? The mission statement says that they, "make clothing for people who do what they do because they love it," not that they are anti-commercial.
Citizen: From your clever moniker, I'll assume you're the same person who posted on the dontbuyitclothing.com discussion board, so I'll repost here what I posted there in regards to your claim that Don't Buy It Clothing are perpetrators of corporate vandalism:
"i appreciate your opinion, but i think it wasn't all that well thought out. in order for your accusation of 'corporate vandalism' to apply there would need to exist a corporation, and vandalism. as far as i know, don't buy it clothing is not a chartered corporation in any sense of the word 'corporation' nor are they graffiti artists, taggers, stencilers, or any other sort of vandal. but hey, it's easy to throw out wild accusations when you can do it anonymously."
Honestly, you seem to be very certain that the person who runs the website is the same person who is, "posting these things all over town." How can you be so certain? If you saw a Nike sticker on a light pole do you think it would be safe to assume that an employee of the company put it up? What if you saw a sticker from a local band? Would you be able to say with absolute certainty that a band member, or even anyone associated with the band had put it there? I don't think so. So why don't you just calm down, maybe have a couple of drinks, and stop worrying about the Big Bad shopping cart.

I don't see what the big deal is. We live in a city, this kind of stuff goes with the territory. Anyway, in the grand scheme of things does some stickers around town really matter?

I think that this is a great start to a clothing company with a good message! Who ever is behind it way to keep at it. I ho.pe this goes far considering the horrible corporate world

Would it be safe to say that everyone wearing a dont buy it shirt is a vandal and worthy of jail time I think not. They are stickers and are not hurting any one. Getting the authorities involved would do nothing but waste city time and money. We have way bigger problems to worry about then some stickers put up randomly.

JOHNSON & JOHNSON will catch a case!! after all they made the BAND-AIDS right!!! awww... but they have no control what so ever where i put the BAND-AID once i purchase it!! thats up to me!!! maybe i was just front'n earlier and it will only take a BAND-AID to cover my special purpose!!! thats one place i could put it!! as for you Concerned citizen... maybe you should be more concerned with thinking your concerns out thoroughly and maybe even running them by a buddy before you make hand-tool or yourself!! thank god for the BURDEN OF PROOF!!! by the way i just checked out that www.dontbuyitclothing.com/ website... good for those guys!!! they're pursuing the american dream!! reach for the stars guys!!! and long live the "second amendment"

I was wondering what those carts were. I saw a kid wearing a cart shirt the other day at thriftway, kinda cool, and I see stuff around town all the time. Doesn't really bother me, at least they're not selling crack, gangbanging, or robbing people. Good luck to you guys! Keep doin whatever it is you guys do.
mellissa said on May. 18, 2010 at 10:29pm
Thanks Megan! I met the guys who made these shirts awhile back, and they were really nice guys, so I bought a shirt to support them. but the bad part is I couldn't find out how to get ahold of them again. Ive been wanting to find them to see if I can get involved in some designing. Glad you posted this so I can finally talk to them about gettin' some my art on a shirt.

I love hype! For the douche up top take your concerns to some one. Who cares cause with Your dumb ass nagging nobody gives two squirts about what you have to say. I've seen the carts all around Tacoma and too me it seems like a form of art. Which is pretty cool when I have a chance to walk around Tacoma spotting out these decrotive shopping carts. Also why don't you go find something that would make a difference in complaining like corrupt cops or people doing dope. Is all I'm saying don't buy it nobody wants your nagging but you sure are getting the name out by creating some hype for all this you hating Tacoma schmuck

I heard these shopping cart people are communists. Un-Patriotic, tie-die wearing, flower power, hippy scum defacing public property for no damn reason. I say we kill 'em all, and let god sort the bastards out.

HAHA
concerned citizen: really.. a big shopping cart means that much to you to think of it as vandalism.. you would rather the police get in the way of something as small as this when there are people selling drugs on the streets, innocent women and little girls being raped, houses being robbed, shootings, assaults, gang activity, murders... the list goes on. it is truely laughable that you take so much passion into something like this, a bunch of dudes putting stickers up to advertise/ make people wonder "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT BIG SHOPPING CART!?!" there are better things to be worried about as a "concerned citizen"

i stay neutral on the topic. however, i do believe there was a song back in the day called "i fought the law and the law won." my grandmother used to always say, "you cant fight city hall, son." i found this discouraging. so i set out to try and change things that were not in my control and failed miserably. i know that none of this is my business. i do not take part in any activity regarding these products but sometimes surrender doesnt seem fair. higher powers are sometimes unfortunately despots. on an inspiring note - to thine own self be true.

For all of you that think that this is art and really no big deal, how would you feel (or how would the owners of dontbuyit) feel if people decided to plaster YOUR home or property with advertising from their companies? Hey, I'm all for advertising and getting the word out about your company, but you should probably ask the folks that own the buildings you are plastering with these stickers and paint if they want you to do so. If they don't, it's called vadalism, not art.
