BIFF! POW! WOW! >>>
Word has been floating amid the circle of regulars for the past week, but today it is official: Comic Book Ink will no longer be Tacoma's largest comic retailer.
Proprietor John Munn this morning signed a fresh lease on a new storefront in the Lakewood Cinema Plaza (2510 84th St. S.), home of the 15 screen Regal movie theater, on Aug. 1, placing the shop just outside Tacoma's city limits for the first time in its eight-year history.
The new space will provide "500 more square feet of space, more interior space and more parking," according to Munn, for what is reportedly significantly less cost than their current location at 72nd Street's Johnsborough Station. The shop originally opened in the Proctor District in 2002, but was forced by construction to move to East Tacoma in 2005.
Comic Book Ink has also had a longstanding partnership with their new neighbor, manning a booth with giveaways at midnight premieres of comic-inspired films such as this Spring's Iron Man 2. Whether this will evolve into late-night openings and promotions for the shop itself remains to be seen.

Sorry to see them leave Tacoma, but that should be a very good location for them. There is nothing at all in that plaza for all the families and young adults who come to the theater, which is always packed. I wish them great success, and I'm sure we'll be stopping by soon.

Lakewood?
Why not move downtown? There are literally a hundred empty retail locations.

Well, that's a pity. It was already too far out in the land of areas-I-never-go for me to get to more than once or twice in the last few years. Now it's relocating to a place-I-never-ever-go. :-/
I will grant, though, it's a MUCH better location, and I might have better luck getting there, as a non-driver, than to East Tacoma.

@Thorax
If all that mattered is "where's empty", then sure. But given the financial struggles the shop has gone through, "can afford" is also pretty key. I doubt he could find a space comparable to the current one downtown, let alone +500 sq ft for -600 dollars per month that he is getting with the new one.

seems like a perfect location right next to the superhero Hollywood movie machine.

I didn't think it was possible for Comic Book Ink to be even closer to where I live, but it's true! A comic book store right next to a movie theater, nothing could be better for promoting my book, "The Comic Critic Presents Seldom Seen Films!". See you at the signing on the 19th at Comic Book Ink! John Munn is da man!

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big supporter of local and small businesses. I try to shop 253 whenever I can.
I feel kind of embarrassed to admit this, but I know Seattle better than I do Lakewood. I know where this new location is, but if it was much deeper into L-Town, I'd have a hard time finding it.

Very exciting. Not only is it better cost and bigger, it's FAR better access - those of us that live on the other side of town can easily hop on the freeway and get right to CBI now, instead of having to fight through dozens of stoplights. Plus I can stop by every time I go see a film, or on my way to the nearby Game Matrix for my board game fix...
