South Sound bars we're thankful for

We miss hanging out at Panamonica's in downtown Tacoma. It closed in July, 2005. Hi Jamaine!

JUMPING IN THE WAYBACK MACHINE >>>

We're getting a little misty-eyed here at Weekly Volcano HQ, where Thanksgivings have passed like snowstorms. Flipping through past late November issues of the Volcano, we've come across several cover stories where we list South Sound bars we were thankful to have around. The last time we tackled such a feat was 2007, which we have online here.

We also discovered a similar story we published in the Volcano in 2002 titled "65 Joints We Are Thankful for." Below, we've posted bars from the story that are long gone. Do you remember these?:

BAR CODE: The 4,000 square-foot Olympia club drops a few jaws at first glance.  There isn't any wood.  It's all metal and aluminum with black Formica and vinyl accents.  Bar Code's modern, urban look houses large lounge booths, three gray-top pool tables, Sony flat-screen and big-screen televisions, a 40-foot bar and a 1,000-square-foot dance floor, which is suspended to soften happy feet.  Owner DJ Joey LaRocque and crew spin till 3 a.m. Saturday, er, Sunday morning. - 414 E. Fourth Ave., Olympia. - Brad Allen

BRICKYARD BAR & GRILL:  While 56th and South Tacoma Way fills up with old-timer rock, Nick Nickolas and his brother-in-law, Bruce Rogers, have introduced country to their flashy, brick-walled, wood-beamed, non-smoking Brickyard Bar & Grill in a big way, especially the packed KAYO DJ House Party night.  You have to arrive early to grab the barstools by the door - prime voyeur viewing.  I also recommend arriving early for one of the booths and a tasty dinner. 5602 S. Washington. - Suzy Stump

BULLSEYE SPORTS LOUNGE: By day it's teriyaki and pot stickers, by night it's straight up rock ‘n' roll.  The BullsEye Sports Lounge is a second home to many Spanawanians and some of the best cover bands in the South Sound. Featuring live music Thursday through Saturday, the BullsEye hosts bands such as Just Dirt and Version 2.0, who play songs straight off the Funky Monkey airwaves.  So hop in your pickup trucks, Camaros and Harleys and head down to the BullsEye, bang your head, tip your lovely female bartenders and don't forget to wear shorts and skirts on Wednesdays because you may want to earn some extra cash by winning the hot legs contest. 14906 Pacific Ave. S., Spanaway. - Angela Jossy

COLE'S OASIS: Located in a suburb of Tacoma known as Ruston, Cole's Oasis is a hole in the wall tavern you've probably passed by many times on your way to Point Defiance. It's dark; it's smoky; it's cramped, but it somehow manages to come across as tall, dark and handsome in an intimate setting. It's mysterious; it's comfortable; it has great acoustics, and the very best thing about Cole's is the caliber of musicians that grace its stage. On jam nights you never know who might drop by or what they might choose to perform. Tacoma's veteran musicians blend and harmonize with fresh faced wannabes continuing to pass on the traditions of rock, jazz and blues. This is the kind of place that spawns legends. Don't you want to be there when that happens? 5811 N. 51st St., Ruston. - Jennifer Johnson

COCO LOCO'S: Eyeing the joint from the outside, my initial impression was something out of pioneer lore.  I thought I had landed on Rip Van Winkle's ramshackle doorstep.  But stepping inside, it was bye-bye Rip, hello Gilligan's Island. Coco Loco's swells with bamboo huts, chunky wood carvings, tiki kitsch and did I mention bamboo?  This joint serves them strong.  However, drunk construction workers punching each other in the arm wears after awhile. 13501 Valley Ave. E., Sumner. - BA

DRAKE'S NIGHTCLUB: You want a hot dance crowd? You want hotties from all over the city grinding it out on the dance floor?  You want to thrash to rock?  Want to chill to jazz?  You want a great hook-up scene? You want a fun, unpretentious vibe? Then come party on all four floors at Drake's, where all that goes down. 734 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. - SS

E.R. ROGERS: Whether it's a cold, windy night or a hot summer evening, one of the South Puget Sound's best restaurant views is from the top story of E.R. Roger's in Steilacoom. Have the lovely Jules bring a Guinness served super cold, the prime rib sandwich and a Caesar salad.  This is the kind of meal that satisfies the body to its core - lots of heaviness, but not the kind that requires a three-hour nap, unless, of course, you overdo it on the Guinness.  1702 Commercial, Steilacoom. - Jake de Paul

FABULOUS FIRWOOD: Normally, I don't really like Ozzy Osbourne's song "Crazy Train." But I have to admit, when I'm listening to the song screeched out at top volume by some cover band in a massive hall with cafeteria tables, surrounded by the maniacal Firwood regulars who are all insanely in love with it, I can't help but get into it. 8014 Valley Ave., Puyallup. - BA

THE FRIENDLY DUCK: If the Friendly Duck is known for one thing and one thing only it's their scotch. Tucked behind the restaurant, the Friendly Duck's "Decoy Room" is lined with a fine assortment of scotches, of all varieties and prices. Just slightly bigger than a bread box, a shot of the stuff in the Decoy Room can go for as much as $60 bucks. Although the new owners have let the collection dwindle a bit, if scotch is your drink, the Friendly Duck, located on South Tacoma Way, is still the place for you. 5026 S. Tacoma Way, Tacoma. - Matt Driscoll

THE GO CLUB: Swank interior, an unpretentious atmosphere, excellent live music, comedy every Thursday, jazz every Wednesday, Adam West, Eric Estrada and Zombo's Lounge Night every Tuesday. What more do you need? I'll tell you what you need - bring back the pool table.  But I digress. Speaking of live music, the last time I was there, I won a drink poster stained with gin during Zombo's bingo game and bought the house a round of Pink Ladies. But again, I digress. 311 Fourth Ave., Olympia. - BA

HOTEL BAR & GRILL: Next to Neener's on Pacific, the Hotel Bar & Grill is like the other side of the world. The Hotel boasts original artwork that demands you talk about it. The non-smoking area to the left of the bar is super conducive to hanging out and talking. The Hotel is also the only place with an awning in front, minor trivia I know, but oh so important during the rainy months. The music and dancing are farther back, and the distance between the lighted table area and the dance floor allows for these completely separate worlds to coexist peacefully.  Who wants to yell in a friend's ear all night? Not I.  Big band jazz fills Wednesday.  House music spins on Monday (look for Donald Glaude's birthday bash in late December), and hip-hop, R&B and dance are featured Thursday through Saturday. A truly solid game room in the back is worth. 2409 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. - JJ

IL FIASCO: This is where you can have a quiet and contemplative glass of wine with some of the area's finest food. It's my favorite place for what I call "drinking foreplay."  2717 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, (253) 272-6688. - JD

JILLIAN'S:  What's your game? Billiards, video games both old and new, air hockey, and pinball are just the tip of the iceberg at Jillian's, which is located on Broadway. Students from every single institution of higher learning in Tacoma come to Jillian's to get their game faces on, some stay late and shake it to DJs. 1114 Broadway, Tacoma. - SS

LADY LUCK SALOON: There are American flags all over the place, but Lady Luck probably would have them even without Sept. 11 as inspiration. This is the last of the great country and western bars.  Bartender Susan Davis controls the room, at 90 mph. Whether you're crying in your beer or catching Raleigh & Roy, the funniest yet absolutely serious country band in the area, Lady Luck is a saloon that can be loved with or without irony.   Regulars rule the Luck, especially early evening on Sundays when old-timers jam on stage. 18823 Pacific Ave. S., Spanaway. - JD

THE LOFT: The design is linear and sleek, incorporating the historical features of the building with modern twists.   Hip-hop thumps from the speakers by way of 50 Cent, Clipse and Jay Z.  Crank up the outside temperature 40 degrees and you could be smack in the heart of Daytona Beach's spring break. Of course, you'd have to remove about 75 percent (45 percent for the women) of the crowds' clothing to complete the picture, but the disposition and mindset here are undeniably that of an older college party - not many who are worried about a baby-sitter yet. 2106 Pacific Ave. - BA

MAGGIE O'TOOLES: Go for the great Guinness pour, the chummy pub atmosphere and hamburgers of the gods at this funky Irish bar.  The noisy, friendly club nights make for a fun night in Lakewood, especially oil wrestling on Thursdays. 6006 100th St. S.W., Lakewood. - JD

McCABES: Where have all the cowboys gone? McCabes American Music Café is a little piece of country amidst the City of Destiny. It's all about the boot scootin' boogie, the Stetsons, giant belt buckles, tight-fitting Wrangler jeans and $300 snakeskin boots that have mostly never seen a cow pie in their lives. But who cares? I'm no cowgirl, but I look damn good in a cowboy hat, so who am I to judge? People are so friendly that even if you've never country danced in your life someone might even offer to spin you around the two-steppin' dance floor just to show you the ropes. If you get there early enough rumor has it free professional dance lessons are offered. 2611 Pacific Ave., Tacoma.  - JJ

NEENER'S PUB: The last time I was down at Pacific Avenue and 24th, I got hosed. Literally. Not drunk, smashed, tanked, hosed, but really hosed by a water hose.  Every Thursday, seemingly sane girls come in, strip down and then try to pin each other in a kiddy pool of mud (switching to oil beginning Dec. 4).  I don't know which is more rad - the cheering half-cocked crowd that gets splattered with mud or the fact that you can watch the whole female mud wrestling debacle on the big screen.  The cover charge goes to the winning "lady," and the bands always rock everybody out for free.  Neener's is cash only and has super cheap beer.  There is no need to look around the joint too closely.  You know it's a dive before you walk in, but then, that's why we love it. 2405 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. - JJ

PORTER & STOUTS: The word "regular" applies here.   Most of the south-end club-folk in the know go there to either wind up for the night, or unwind at the end of the evening.  The wait staff are lookers.  I've been going there for years on and off, and most have that sweet college freshman look. 7505 Steilacoom Blvd., Lakewood - BA

TABOO: When I hear the phrase "deep, dark, and sexy" I think of Taboo. Dark with burgundy curtains, cauldrons of fake hell fire, stripper poles and a dance floor below with such DJs as Kemal, Bobby O and Adrian.  Tuesday it's only $1.50.  100 S. Ninth, Tacoma. - SS
