Tacoma, Wash. MOVIE BIZ BUZZ: A Way with Words

Luke Smiraldo lords over "Slam Town," his first cinematic creation. Photo courtesy of Smiraldo

LUKE SMIRALDO BRINGS SHAKESPEARE TO SLAM TOWN >>>

Luke Smiraldo likes using the word "enamored" a lot, and why not? The man has plenty to love.

One could start anywhere with this multi-talented artist, but his strong connections to the Tacoma community strike me right away. A resident since '91, Smiraldo realized only recently that he hasn't lived anywhere else for as long before. My own time here goes a little farther back (I arrived in '89), and he says something during our conversation that rushes right to the heart my experience.

On seeing 20 years go in a flash he says, "It crept up on me, like Tacoma does for some of us."

Smiraldo has an established reputation for calling upon language to express the inexpressible, another passion of his. When not wooing crowds with spoken poetry or his considerable confidence as an MC, he's probably off by himself, crafting his next play.

But not for long, which brings us to Smiraldo's third love: collaboration. He finds great creative energy with other artists, and so set about devising a project that would kindle exactly this atmosphere. And what art calls on more individuals, each combining their own expertise, than film?

Smiraldo originally intended his brainchild, Slam Town, to air on television, but his girlfriend suggested more expeditious distribution. Now the Web gives him a speedier way to release content to fans, "without going through all the pain and suffering of raising tons of funds in order to get onto a major (TV) station."

Slam Town uses real locations (all in Tacoma, of course) to sketch a fictional world where spirits roam and poetry drips off every inhabitant's tongue - in other words, the Bard resurrected in modern environs.

"I loved the idea of a kind of ‘urban Shakespeare,' " Smiraldo says, "in a town where everyone speaks in a heightened language of urban poetry and slam." He describes this dialect as "sometimes crude, sometimes beautiful, but always edgy" - a fair portrait of Tacoma itself, I'd say.

For each webisode, local poets compose material, which Smiraldo gathers and puts into screenplay form. When it comes time to film, everyone performs their own piece on camera. Last year the team completed the first two of a series its creator hopes will last for 30 shows. Watch these on Smiraldo's website, www.vanillasoul.net. Also remind your smartphone: Episode #3 debuts at The Grand Cinema on Saturday, March 17.

***

Hear Smiraldo discuss his many loves and more this week on Volcano Radio, which airs Thursday from 8-9 P.M. on www.nwczradio.com and is available as a podcast at weeklyvolcano.com directly following.

Emergency Food Network pulls out the numbers

Emergency Food Network Director Helen McGovern

YEAR-END LIST OF A DIFFERENT SORT >>>

While most of you spent your post Christmas-Festivus-Hanukkah-holiday storing away fuzzy decorations or tyring to restore your belief that your children are the moons to your tides, Emergency Food Network Director Helen McGovern crunched numbers. From her Lakewood office, she threw some additional coal on the fire and compared this past year's bounty to 2010. Here is what she discovered:

In 2011, area food programs distributed 19,396,885 pounds of food, which equates to 15,517,664 meals - more than 1 million more meals than 2010.

Emergency Food Network provides 80 percent of Pierce County's emergency food. EFN distributes nutritious, staple food to 67 food banks, shelters, and hot meal sites in Pierce County.

Area food programs see an average of 147,000 visitors each month.

Demand for emergency food in our community increased 43 percent from 2008 to 2010, and then grew an additional 6 percent in 2011.

Total visits to food banks, meal sites and shelters topped 1,285,000 visits, an increase of 74,000 over 2010.

In 2011, the Gottfried and Mary Fuchs foundation contributed $100,000 to help EFN purchase food.

The Gary E. Milgard Foundation granted EFN $75,000 to support warehouse operations

Washington Women's Foundation contributed $50,000 towards food purchase.

EFN's Abundance charity auction raised mor ethan $200,000 for the organization

Pierce County Hunger Walk raised an additional $130,000.

EFN received $100,000 from the Murdoch Charitable Trust to help replace its roof, along with $50,000 from the Puyallup Tribe and $50,000 from an anonymous donor to help with roof construction.

EFN also receives funding totaling more than $400,000 from the federal government, the State of Washington, the City of Tacoma, the City of Lakewood and Pierce County.

Widows of the four fallen officers in Lakewood worked with the Lakewood Police Department to raise more than $40,000 and more than 40,000 pounds of food during the 2nd annual Fallen Officers Food Drive.

Emergency Food Network received other gifts around the holidays, including $25,000 from the Walmart Foundation, $10,000 from the Safeco Insurance Foundation and $5,000 from the William Kilworth Foundation.

EFN also received $10,000 from the Hendrix Foundation and $5,000 from Quadrant Homes for Mother Earth Farm.

For information about the Emergency Food Network, to donate, or to learn about volunteer opportunities, visit www.efoodnet.org.

Nice work Helen.

5 Things To Do Today: Charles Lambert in Oly, "Wish You Were Here," karaoke galore and more ...

Play bingo at the New Frontier Lounge tonight.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 11, 2012>>>

1. Join Charles Lambert tonight at the Timberland Regional Library in Olympia for a presentation on Martin Luther King Jr. that arrives just in time for the MLK holiday. According to hype, Lambert wil "bring Civil Rights history to life using images, lecture, and song. This presentation will cover the Bus Boycott, the March on Washington, and the Sanitation Workers Strike in Memphis along with music from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s." It starts at 7:30 p.m.

2. Play bingo with those not just killing time before the Grim Reaper calls their number. Every Wednesday at The New Frontier Lounge, players are treated to a rather boisterous evening of number-calling. The music rocks, the prizes are craptastic and there's something very satisfying about yelling "It's not a tumor!" when B-9 is pulled from the hopper (Schwarzenegger anyone?). Sessions are free with $2 margaritas and $4 Cuervo Gold shots during bingo. Every Wednesday night is also Taco Night with $1 beef, $1 black bean and $2 chicken in soft or crunchy shells.

3. Today South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia will unveil its Wish You Were Here postcard exhibit, the result of months of wading through submissions and the combined word of 75 local and regional artists who produced 250 works of art in a variety of mediums, from paintings, prints and drawings to photography, ceramics and sculpture. Running through March 2 in SPSCC's Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts Gallery, Wish You Were Here will celebrate an official opening reception Friday, Jan. 20 - kicking off a six-week silent auction, with all the works on display available for purchase.

4. Holy crap! Hump Day already? That must mean it's time again for Masa College Night. Expect flesh.

5. It's karaoke galore around the South Sound tonight. Check out the Volcano's live local music listings for the bevy of bars and clubs offering you a chance at the mic tonight. Hot spots include Backstage Bar & Grill, Club Silverstone, The Swiss and even Tillicum's Barbecue Inn.

Suggestions: Where will you be on Friday the 13th?

FUTURE THINGS ARE COMING >>>

Here comes another Friday the 13th, and you need something perfectly thematic to do. But not unlucky, please, because there's enough disappointment circling the planet.

There area couple of "Friday the 13th" events going down in Tacoma.

First, The Hub will host a Press Your Luck party, which is basically an excuse to pound booze. The Hub will be pouring $3 Harmon pint and premium wells, $4 Jager Bombs, $5 Jameson shots and a $4 shot special every hour, beginning at 6 p.m. when the party starts.

Second, Encore nightclub will discount its VIP tables to $13 Friday. To reserve the tables, contact Rick at 253.335.9139. And ladies, you're in luck. Friday is also ladies night at Encore, which means free admission.

Where will you be Friday? Hiding?
