Oprah doughnuts: It's what's for breakfast - and Legendary Doughnuts is doling them on its first morning of business at 2602 Sixth Ave. in Tacoma. The Oprah is a long maple glazed doughnut topped with crisp bacon - and it's freaking delicious.  

As the Weekly Volcano reported this week, Legendary Doughnuts offers "upward of 50 doughnut varieties, some with sub-varieties on top of that. ... While not all doughnuts are in the case each day, the store keeps some naked doughnuts in the back so you can make requests."

Yesterday's comment of the day came from Peggy in response to the Weekly Volcano's first South Sound Sidekick column, which posts every Friday. Our first column was penned by The Counselor aka Jim Foley, who shared his thoughts on what to do if you're pulled over on suspicion of DUI.

Art at Work: Tacoma's Arts Month showcases just about every aspect of the arts T-town sports during the month of November - but one of the most unique facets to this dreary month of art is the studio tour program. Today, 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., Tacoma working artists open their studios to the public. For the most part, studio tours are self-directed. While there are 55 artists on the tour and their studios are located all around Tacoma, you can visit just one or all 55 (good luck with that). Not all studios are open both days, or all hours, so check the program first. Programs are available in printed format at Tacoma's museums and many local coffee shops, and online at ArtAtWorkTacoma.com.

For the ninth year, Tacoma Art Museum hosts a Dia de los Muertos Festival. Day of the Dead, ya'll. Two Pacific Grill staff members lost loved ones in the past two years. Chef Jessica Sewell lost her husband to cancer. Cancer also took Manager Carol Reutercrona's mother. In their memory, the PG staff will throw a benefit party for the Lymphoma & Leukemia Society this afternoon at The Swiss. FOOD NETWORK VS THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

There's been some excitement buzzing around the South this week about a certain 1967 Chevy Camaro SS Convertible cruising through Tacoma, Puyallup and Olympia. Not because it's a sexy hue of red and hot, but rather it sports the license plate FLVRTWN.

Wait.

Guy Fieri - champion of season two's Next Food Network Star, and host of the Food Network series Guy's Big Bite AND the ever-popular Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives - has been known to appear in one such vehicle.

Yup.

Fieri and the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives crew spent the last week interviewing, eating and hugging the South Sound.

Nearly two months ago Chef Charlie McManus learned Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives was interest in the neighborhood pub he and his partner, Jacqueline Plattner, transformed from a beloved breakfast joint then semi-beloved steak joint into their street-food slinging, buttermilk fried chicken cookin', craft cocktail pouring Crown Bar on Tacoma's Sixth Avenue.

Then nothing. Nil. Not a peep from food-centric producers. The word out of food central was as dark as the paint on the Murray Morgan Bridge.

TGIFood Channel. Word came the preceding Friday the show's crew would be arriving Sunday, Oct. 28. McManus and his fellow chef spent that Sunday in the kitchen preparing dishes for close-up shots; Monday, producers filmed crowd responses while long-time cheerful Crown employees Chelsea and Kevin darted between cameras; Fieri dropped Thursday sharing his humor, appetite and amped-up rasp of a voice with McManus and crew.

After the Crown Bar, the cast and crew jumped into the convertible and drove down the street to Dirty Oscar's.

Though almost neighbors, both "dive"(?) bars prove that approachable ambiance and comfort does not equate to having to serve up traditional bar grub. As a matter of fact both establishments use adventurous ingredients and unconventional flair to make dishes anything but what one expects from bar bites.

Chef Aaron Grissom of Dirty Oscar's tells me of Fieri that the guy has a sense of humor. Boys will be boys after all and jesterly behavior is expected in a kitchen. Fieri was no exception. If you've every viewed the show Fieri's playfulness and exuberance is not merely showmanship.

After Dirty Oscar's, Fieri headed toward Puyallup to Crockett's Public House for pub style nibbles. Crockett's posted photos on Facebook of its Diners, Drive Ins and Dives entrees - including its signature Public House Meatballs.

After a stint at Tacoma's Bruno's European Cafe for authentic German cuisine, the convertible drove south for visits with Fish Tale Brew Pub and Darby's Café in downtown Olympia.  At Darby's someone may have overheard some talk about Oysters Creole, though one of its many vegan delights as a feature wouldn't surprise me. The tiny café has quite the selection for the non-meat eaters.

Word on the street is the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives crew whooped it up once filming finished. Apparently some South Sound fans died and went to Food Network groupie heaven.

During all of the filming and noshing Fieri made time to do some good by making an appearance at Saint Martin's Gala, held in Lacey's Saint Martin's University, where he hosted a black tie auction with proceeds benefiting student's scholarship funds. Fieri also met with soldiers and culinary specialists at Madigan Army Medical Center.

Though no date has been announced you can expect the show to be featured in the spring with a start of a new Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives season.

The stretch of Pacific Avenue from Seventh to 17^th streets in downtown Tacoma will finally receive a makeover thanks to nearly $4 million in state and federal public works grants that arrived this summer, bringing the total to $8.3 million to add new sidewalks, street lighting, paving, shared roadway bicycle markings (sharrows), green stormwater infrastructure including 14 new rain gardens and new landscaping. 4. The Northwest Repertory Singers will be practicing for its Strike the Harp, Ring the Bells, Sound the Oboe Christmas concert, which will be staged in the middle of December. And when the NWS practices, it goes big and invites the public. It's never too early for traditional carols and favorite songs of the season. MONDAY MORNING GROUP HUG >>>

This morning, Tacoma officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its Pacific Avenue Streetscape Project, a beautification and innovative storm water improvement plan that includes new street paving, sidewalks, bicycle lanes and crosswalks along the Pacific Avenue stretch from Old City Hall at Seventh Street to the Tacoma Art Museum at 17th Street.

This is not your Grandfather Sprague's streetscape project.

At the gathering around Fireman's Park just off the north end of the proposed project, Congressman Norm Dicks, Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland, Tacoma Councilmember Jake Fey and others explained how improvements will enhance the business opportunities and livability of downtown's core street — the "front porch" of downtown Tacoma – adding new curb, gutter and sidewalks, including a bicycle sharrow, on-street parking, landscaped curb bulb outs, street trees, new transit stops, new street furnishings, lighting, public art and signs to direct visitors to various attractions.

"A brighter downtown will be an incentive for smaller and larger businesses alike to bring more jobs and additional economic activity to this community," Rep. Norm Dicks.

In addition to the beautification, the project will integrate innovative stormwater improvements, including storm water planters, pervious pavement and plantings. The green storm water infrastructure includes 14 new rain gardens, which pass the storm water through organically enriched soil that filters out pollutants and either slows the release of the water into the storm system or percolates it into the ground — before draining into the Thea Foss Waterway.

"We have a great partnership with the Tacoma Art Museum," said Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland. "We were able to successfully complete a National Endowment for the Arts grant for the 17th Street portion of this project."

As part of the beautification of Pacific Avenue project artist Elizabeth Conner will install green textural tiles in strategic locations along the 10-block stretch of street and 20 to 28 large-scale botanically-themed concrete sculptures that can convey storm water. The “green flash” concept will be integrated into four bus shelters. Green flashes are optical phenomena that occur shortly after sunset on the ocean's horizon.

Also, strings of lights will be strung above Pacific Avenue near Eighth Street to create a bright canopy of lights.

After many years of planning, design work, construction and implementation, the Pacific Avenue Streetscape Project received a major boost this summer after $3 million from the state's public works board and $978,300 from the Federal Highways Administration arrived. Combined with $4.4 million in grants and local matches previously secured, the city chose Tucci & Sons, Inc. as the project's contractor.

The project is expected to be completed in December 2013.

SOUTH SOUND SEXY >>>

Movemeber - that cute portmanteau of mustache and November - is in full swing, promoting men's health awareness around the world.

The emphasis is prostate cancer, which, according to cancer.org, affected more than 2, 300,000 men in the United States in 2008 - more than thyroid, colon and kidney cancers combined. Women diagnosed with breast cancer totaled near 2,600,000 that same year.

Founded in 2004, the Movember Foundation has been launching health awareness campaigns across New Zealand and Australia, and by 2007, across the globe, most notably by encouraging "Mo Bros" to grow mustaches.

The pink ribbon has been around since 1991, it's high time men have an international symbol that gains momentum - Snickers and Foster's beer have both launched Movember ads. The mustache encompasses both manliness and playfulness, acting as the perfect catalyst for a sometimes heavy, taboo topic. 

Men (and women) are praising, and growing mustaches of all types - from the Burt Reynolds to Ringo Starr - to bring attention to other men's health issues as well, including early detection, treatment, diagnosis, awareness of family history and a move toward healthier lifestyles.
