A SANDWICH A WEEK >>>
Continuing my quest for awesome sandwiches in the South Sound, I dropped in on the Antique Sandwich Company in the little town of Ruston.
It's no surprise the Antique serves a tasty sandwich. It's been around since the mid-'70s. It has "sandwich" in its name! Yes, it's a funky little café with antique tables and chairs, old rugs and even a couch, but there is nothing funky about the sandwiches.
The Antique keeps it simple: bread, meat, cheese and vegetables. Several traits separate the sandwiches from the subpar: a hug goes into every sandwich, thick sliced meat packs with flavor and the cheese is shredded, not sliced, adding more flavor per bite
The turkey sandwich, its most popular one, needs a big mouth to take its pile of meat. Add the Swiss or cheddar cheeses, lettuce, tomatoes and sprouts and you have a counterbalance to a small animal.
The absolute best characteristic of the turkey sandwich is its housemade raspberry jam. Your mom's - hell my mom's - leftover cranberry sauce has nothing on this jam.
Whether you choose chips or salad sides, you must order a hand-scooped shake. Must.
ANTIQUES SANDWICH COMPANY, 7 A.M. TO 7:30 P.M., WEDNESDAY-MONDAY, 7 A.M. TO 10 P.M. TUESDAY, 5102 N. PEARL ST., TACOMA, 253.752.4069
