The West Central Park, a privately owned park that opened in May at the corner of Division and Harrison in west Olympia, has spent the summer living up to its goal of being an open community space to gather, relax and network.
Saturday, from 1-5 p.m., the park hosts a Sustainable Living Exposition, bringing in more than 20 local businesses and organizations, including GRuB, Intercity Transit, city of Olympia and Native Plant Salvage Project.
A June Jubilee featuring local artisans and crafts and A Bite of West Olympia were two other park-sponsored events.
"These events go hand in hand with the core values we have in the park," said Chad Law, general secretary and trustee for the park. "It's showcasing the local community and a hub for supporting Olympia, especially the Westside. Hopefully these will become annual events."
The events tend to draw in 200-300 people and the Sustainability Expo should fair just as well.
"Out of our events, this is the one that had an incredible amount of support," said Law. "One of the things we hope to do is introduce these people to each other and to the community."
Places like Northwest Eco Building Guild, Yelm Earthworm and Casting Farm, Olympia Federal Savings Sound and City of Olympia Public Works Transportation will be on hand to give info and demonstrations on everything from composting to conservation, preservation to permaculture, recycling to rain gardens, native plants to solar energy, transportation and more.
"The idea is to show the city how businesses are going green, to share sustainable ideas and greener designs," said Law. "It's money-saving thing too. It's not just a moral, political and policy thing. It makes dollars and sense too."
P.S. While you feed your mind, Tamale Fusion and Vante's Inferno will be there to feed your belly.
