Sitting in the heart of Tacoma's Proctor District, hidden in the upstairs portion of the Old House Mercantile, diners will discover Soul, a restaurant teeming with Southern bites and Puerto Rican flair. The dishes carry a home-cooked appeal such as blackened fish (tilapia and catfish) and fried chicken and waffles - accompanied by hearty sides including mac and cheese, sweet potatoes and collard greens.
This week I suggest folks try Soul's Carolina Style BBQ Pork Sandwich accompanied by the dirty rice. This tasty sammie is not the smothered pulled pork variety, rather the star player is tender cubed pork and onions, zesty in flavor, like a delicious cousin of Dijon mustard. The bun was toasted to perfection lending a nice crisp exterior to the soft bun interior. The dirty rice was hearty with fair portions of meaty nibbles and fresh green onions. I was tempted to mix the bits of porky goodness that escaped the stuffed bun with the rice.
While Soul opened in August 2013, it delivered efficient friendly service and a flavorful dining journey of an old soul. For those looking for an adventure in dining I suggest giving them a go.
SOUL, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, 2717 N. Proctor St., Tacoma, 253.761.7685
