When a dive bar receives a facelift is it still a dive?

A week ago today, The Corner Bar, more commonly known as Hank's, closed its doors for some renovation - phase two to be precise. A few months ago, The Corner Bar added a shiny, wooden back bar and matching fireplace with mantle. These updates seemed just as out of place as its snazzy restrooms (fit for Vegas I tell ya) when accompanied by worn, stained carpets and rickety furnishings.

It was clear Saturday when Hanks reopened its doors that it's still a work in progress. Beams that were once stationed in the center have been removed while the ceiling beams are now exposed leaving the Corner Bar looking much more open and clean - even with its worn carpets and black tarp hanging from the ceiling. The front side of the building may leave passersby thinking Hanks is still closed with wood panels covering all but the entrance.

The menu remains the same with sammie staples and pub grub such as buffalo chicken nachos - with wallet friendly prices and, like any good dive bar, partnered with stiff cocktails. The sandwiches are solid, served on hoagie rolls with a side of Hawaiian chips. The pesto chicken (my favorite) features nicely proportioned amounts of meat to bread, cheesy throughout, dang tasty and served hot.

For those who have not visited, Hanks is a solid, no-frills neighborhood hangout: brews, booze and bites paired with a pool table, jukebox and a few gaming staples such as Lord of the Rings pinball and Golden Tee.
