Local vocals

Angela Jossy and Deborah Page will play McCabe’s American Music Café tonight. Bobble Tiki jumped inside acoustic popster Jossy’s noggin.

BOBBLE TIKI: What do you really enjoy about making music?

ANGELA JOSSY: Ever since I was a kid I’ve been influenced by music â€" the great mood enhancer.  I used to say I had a good enough voice to be in a choir but not good enough to be a soloist.  Then I went through a tough time in my life, and Alanis Morrissette started singing songs that seemed to come from my very own heart. I would turn up Jagged Little Pill and wail along with her as a release of my sorrow and pain. It was brilliant therapy! I knew this was my calling because it felt so good. I wanted to make other people feel good too. I prayed to God to give me a voice and something to say. He must have been listening that day because my voice began to change from choir girl to rock star.  Soon new songs were flooding my brain like a download from the great beyond. It’s been like that ever since.

TIKI: Who’s your favorite Duran Duran member and why?

JOSSY: Nick Rhodes â€" I’m always a sucker for a hot guy.

TIKI: What’s your guilty pleasure?

JOSSY: Dancing with reckless abandon, of course!

Influx of gnomes (part deux)

BOBBLE TIKI: MORE WITH THE TACOMA GNOME >>>

If you’ve read the most recent issue of the Weekly Volcano, you know Bobble Tiki interviewed the Tacoma Gnome in this week’s column. He was covering the two piece rock band Mr. Gnome, who will play Le Voyeur in Olympia on Saturday, May 31, and Bobble Tiki couldn’t help but search out the Tacoma Gnome for his thoughts on the event.

Yesterday, Bobble Tiki posted his full interview with Sam Meister and Nicole Barille of Mr. Gnome. Unfortunately, because of space restraints in the world of print, Bobble Tiki was only able to fit half of it in this week’s paper. The same goes for his interview with the Tacoma Gnome.

Tacoma_gnome2

Because it’s only fair (and fairly entertaining), here’s a look at everything the Tacoma Gnome had to say:

Bobble Tiki: As Bobble Tiki mentioned, there's a band from Cleveland called “Mr. Gnome” set to play Olympia this week? Are they of any relation to the Tacoma Gnome?
Tacoma Gnome: Mr. Gnome is not directly related, of course, to Tacoma Gnome, but the history of Ohio, and Cleveland in particular, is one that might parallel that of Tacoma, but not directly related to me.

BT: Mr. Gnome is a two piece rock outfit that really knows how to throw down the good stuff. What types of music really tickle the Tacoma Gnome's fancy? What's in the Tacoma Gnome’s iPod these days?
TG: Personally, I really enjoy the sound of lutes and other, um, I guess you call them folksy sounding music. I don't really have an iPod, but, if I did, I certainly would have a wide selection of the classic Gnome songs:  Warm the Tobacco, I'm Coming Home; With a Hammer and Glogg, We'll be Fine; Eine Kleine Gnomemusik; and, of course, the most recent one from Weezer, "Pork and Beans", but mainly because I enjoy the YouTube video.

BT: Does the Tacoma Gnome ever go out and see a show?
TG: Have I seen a show?  I can answer that with a firm, YES.  I did break away from my garden duties on a Third Thursday to see Deborah Page at Sanford and Son. Wow.  She is a talented, artist, and as humans go, she is quite attractive.

BT: Bobble Tiki recently saw the Tacoma Gnome make (what Bobble Tiki assumes was) his first film appearances? How was it working on the film "Blogland Murders?" Do you feel you were type cast? What was your method for getting into character?
TG: I appreciate you following my ventures into the world cinema. Hopefully, in the future, I can be on the larger keno screens around the city.  Working with the crew on the "Blogland Murders" was a delight!  Getting into character?  Wow.  That was more challenging than I could have imagined.  Especially that I am a creature of peace and gentleness.

BT: Bobble Tiki also hears the Tacoma Gnome was in Adam J. Manley’s “The Destiny of the Gnome.” Is this the start of a film career for the Tacoma Gnome?

TG: Between the two films I felt there was enough diversity in my acting style. We shall see.  I have spoken to The Producer, who produced "Destiny of the Gnome", and he is hinting at a longer version.

BT: Explain the Tacoma Gnome's love for the City of Destiny.
TG: I love Tacoma because it is a beautiful place.  I believe I could travel for years and years within its borders finding unique nooks and crannies to explore. I am proud to tell my family I am in Tacoma, and will continue my adventures as long as I am able.

Influx of gnomes

BOBBLE TIKI: MORE WITH MR. GNOME >>>

In the most recent issue of the Weekly Volcano, Bobble Tiki interviewed Nicole Barille and Sam Meister, who collectively make up Cleveland’s Mr. Gnome. The two piece rock and roll band will play Le Voyeur in Olympia on Saturday, May 31.

Mr_gnome

If you’ve never heard of Mr. Gnome, let Bobble Tiki be the first to fill you in: these guys throw down with the best of them. Earlier this year the band released Deliver This Creature, and Bobble Tiki hasn’t been the only lover of rock to take note. Critics far and wide have been lauding Mr. Gnome.

Bobble Tiki also interviewed the Tacoma Gnome in this week’s issue of the WV - it only seemed appropriate. Unfortunately, this means Bobble Tiki only had space for a portion of the interview he did Barille and Meister. Below is the full interview. Check out the Spew tomorrow for the complete transcript of Bobble Tiki’s interview with the Tacoma Gnome.

Bobble Tiki: Let's start by talking about Deliver This Creature. Has it been fulfilling to get a debut full-length out on the street? How has the reaction been so far?

Meister: This album really came out of nowhere for us.  When we threw our stuff into storage last summer and hit the road, we weren't really sure where we were going or what we were trying to accomplish.   We ended up having a few weeks off between tours and got introduced to both Wavelab and Jackpot Studios and decided it was the right time and place to attempt a full-length album.  We jumped in there with a limited budget and very limited time, crossed our fingers and hoped for the best.
Barille: Yeah, we feel really fortunate to have had the chance to work at WaveLab, Jackpot and Smart Studios (which is where the album was mixed).  We pretty much spent our life savings on this record and it's a culmination of our time on the road last year. The reaction has been overwhelming positive and we're quite flattered by all of the positive press.

BT: What's the writing and recording process like for you guys? Is there a formula or do you guys tend to wing it?

Meister: The writing and recording process are 2 completely different beasts.  Our writing process isn't very formulaic. We seem to write music in all different fashions.  Sometimes Nicole will already have pieces and bring them to me, sometimes we'll get something off of jamming, and sometimes a little song bird sings beautiful melodies into my ear.  Then I kill him...but I don't eat him, Nicole does.
Barille: I didn't want to eat him...we're poor and I was sick of Ramen noodles...

BT: Why does Mr. Gnome work? What are the benefits of a two person band? Any negatives?

Meister:  Mr. Gnome works for us because we're both crazy.  We cry a lot and Nicole cuts herself.
Barille: We're definitely both crazy but who isn't nowadays?  I think the reason we never added any other members to the band was because the writing process came so naturally for us.  We can tell each other what we like and don't like without worrying about hurting each other's feelings.  Sam cries a lot.  I know he says we both do but he's definitely the sensitive one.  I think the only negative of being a two-piece is the fear of repeating ourselves because of limited instrumentation. Our goal is to constantly evolve but that's not something you can force. It’s gotta come naturally.

Mr_gnome1

BT: You're in the midst of a tour. How do you guys travel? Sleeping on floors and long hours in a dirty van, or are you guys more high class than that?

Meister:  I guess we're your standard dirty rock band.  Traveling in a minivan, sleeping wherever we can.  You gotta love it, or it'll eat you alive.
Barille:  Oh man...our van is so gross right now.  It smells like garbage, feet, cigarettes, and poop.  There's nothing high class about our traveling arrangements.

BT: Why Mr. Gnome?

Meister: Acid + picking your future band name = Mr. Gnome.  Garden gnomes on LSD can be very beautiful, provocative creatures.  So playful.  So soft. But don't squeeze them too hard, they can't breathe when you do that.

BT: There's a solid amount of Mr. Gnome buzz at the moment. Do you guys pay attention to any of it?

Meister:  We try not to, but sometimes it's unavoidable.  We are very flattered that people are interested in what we do.  And even more flattered when we connect with people through our music.  But you know, with buzz comes positives and negatives.  You get people who love what you do and people who think it's complete shit.  That's all part of the game.
Barille: We're just really flattered that people give a shit about our music.  The music scene is so over-saturated right now because of Myspace and the Internet in general so the fact that people actually pay attention to what we do, it means a lot.

More walkability issues

BOBBLE TIKI: PIPING IN ON WALKABILITY >>>

Izenmania wrote about it. The Trib's Real Estate blog ran some numbers on it. Even Matt Driscoll has it on his mind.

Walkability.

Bobble Tiki is all for a walking friendly city. Even though he has a constant spring in his step, Bobble Tiki is just as concerned regarding Tacoma's walkability factor as the rest of the city.

First problem to solve â€" sidewalk hogs.

Bobble Tiki has a bone to pick with all of you sidewalk hogs out there.  He doesn’t think he needs to name names.  You know who you are.

Bobble Tiki had a particularly frustrating encounter with a group of sidewalk hogs Saturday night.

He was heading down to one of his favorite watering holes on Sixth Avenue â€" Crown Bar. Bobble Tiki wasn’t exactly looking his best â€" Why bother dressing up or showering, even, when it's raining!   That’s just crazy talk.  He had on a pair of his finest dirty jeans, and his hair was done up in its usual Nerf-ball fashion when he got stuck behind a group of ultra decked out UPS hotties.

It took Bobble Tiki 10 minutes to get from his car by Masa to the Crown Bar.  Why, you ask?  Because these girls were “cruising” for a place to eat, hang out, and hookup. It was almost as if they were blocking Bobble Tiki’s way on purpose due to his shabby looks. Every time Bobble Tiki shifted to one side they all managed to migrate to the same side. He would fake right and dodge left, but they were always there to block his way.

Just as Bobble Tiki was about to explode with indignation he saw the light (of his Crown Bar). In a moment of sheer luck, the glitter girls moved to the right (there was probably a shiny coin on the ground that distracted them) and Bobble Tiki was able to run into the safety and warmth of bartender Dino's Manhattan.

As you just read Tacoma has huge walkability issues.  Bobble Tiki suggests moving sidewalks to contain sidewalk hogs so the rest of us can move along quickly. Or more Chopstix clubs to keep the hotties off the streets. Of course, Bobble Tiki was the sidewalk problem after the Crown Bar closed.

Motamedy remedy

BOBBLE TIKI: END THE DAY SMOOTH >>>

Bobble Tiki is by no means suggesting that spending time with mama on her special day is stressful.   Not at all. It's... what's the word?  Ah yes, a pleasure.  But on the off chance that your nerves are shattered by tonight, remember that the Cedarwood Dome hosts the easy-to-take melodies of Darren Motamedy’s sax.

He won’t have a V8

BOBBLE TIKI: HEALTH SUCKS >>>

Bobble Tiki admits it. Seduced by those commercials featuring hot but sensible-looking womenfolk with haircuts straight out of Redbook, he tried a V8 V-Fusion Light. Wow! It was everything Bobble Tiki ever expected from a chilled banana sentenced to life in a soda can. He got halfway through one before the screams of his suddenly health-stricken mitochondria overwhelmed Bobble Tiki with pity.

Needless to say, the V8 can's tenure on Bobble Tiki’s Coffee Table of Most High Esteem was a mercifully brief three minutes â€" half as long as last week's Pepsi One that met a similar fate. Bobble Tiki banishes you both to Elbe! Bobble Tiki’s ass-bones did not achieve their vast sofa jurisdiction by being selective about calories. Researchers, double your efforts on Gravy Coke!
