NIGHT MOVES: Sammy Steele Band, Charlie Drown, Randy Oxford Band, Girl Trouble, Big Wheel Stunt Show and others ...

Seastar performs at 8 p.m. inside the Mandolin Cafe in Tacoma.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

Big Whisky Saloon Tacoma - Downtown. Sammy Steele Band CD Release Party. Release of their debut full-length record "Songs From The Third Cactus". 8 pm. $20.

Harbor Greens/Forza Wine Bar Gig Harbor. The Kari Ehli Band. 7 pm. NC.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Charlie Drown, Serous, Haunting The Disconnect, Days Armor. 7 pm. $5.

  • The goth is strong in this one. Charlie Drown is the kind of group/artist/performer/whatever that's totally comfortable throwing around lyrics about beds made of skin and "48 dead in my head," all while drum machines and synths pulse in the background. Lead vocals are not so much singing as they are various vacillations between sultry coos and snarls. The name Charlie Drown is hilarious on its surface, but thinking more about what exactly the band might be getting at by naming itself this is kind of like a cat chasing its tail (is it still funny if maybe they take the name seriously?). Best, I think, to approach Charlie Drown as something that'll get you to dance madly and get all dark and stuff. Nothing wrong with that. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Big Wheel Stunt Show, with Gavin Guss. 8 pm. $7.

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Hot Rush, Memory Boys, Skrill Meadow. 9 pm.

Louie G's Pizzeria Fife. Benefit Concert For Veterans, National Guard, Reserve & Family Members, with The Randy Oxford Band. All Ages. 7 pm. $10 & donate a new toy at the door.

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Blue Creepers. All Ages. 6 pm. Seastar. All Ages. 8 pm.

Morso Wine Bar Gig Harbor. Jaime Wyatt, Ted Wulfers. 8 pm. $25.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Countdown to Christmas Show, with Girl Trouble, The Fucking Eagles, The Dignitaries. 8:30 pm.

  • Christmas in Tacoma is synonymous with a number of things. Half-racks of Pabst adorned with bows. Eternal darkness. Mediocre gift exchanges. Heavy drinking. Loneliness. Depression. They all have their place on the Tacoma holiday mantle. Luckily, T-Town also has the annual (or somewhat annual) Girl Trouble Countdown to Christmas show, which this year will again be held at The New Frontier Lounge, and - along with its garage rocking namesake - will bring Grit City staples the Fucking Eagles and the Dignitaries to the stage. It will be a Tacoma-centric celebration of the holidays that's easy to get behind, and won't leave you a sobbing mess of tears all alone in front of the TV watching Holiday claymation. Or does that just happen to me? - Matt Driscoll

The Spar Olympia. Paul Mauer. 8 pm. NC.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. J-Mac, Tie One On. 9 pm. NC

Tempest Lounge Tacoma - Hilltop. Hamell On Trial. 7 pm. $10.

NIGHT MOVES: KC Brakes band, Man Without Wax, Blues Brothers, Derek Kelley & The Speedwobbles ...

Moon Juice will rock Hell's Kitchen tonight.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

C.I. Shenanigans Tacoma - Northend. KC Brakes band. 7-10. NC.

Dawson's Bar and Grill Tacoma - South. Borderline. 9 pm.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Man Without Wax, True Holland, Absence Of Grace, Moon Juice. All Ages. 6 pm. $5-$7.

  • In a manner similar to fellow bombastic locals Roman Holiday, Man Without Wax sounds perfectly radio-ready, a band just lying around, waiting for someone to discover them and throw them on the modern rock station. They've captured the sound of bands like Kings of Leon and even groups from the Glasgow scene (Frightened Rabbit, Glasvegas) - bands that revel in drama, and never shy from shooting for the rafters. These are songs meant to be sung along to, passionately, by crowds of strangers. Man Without Wax approach the tropes of arena-rock with supreme confidence, playing those chiming guitars and dropping the bottom out of the chorus with aplomb and a certain sense that they've discovered new countries of sound. That this is well-trod ground makes it no less effective. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Blues Brothers. 6 pm. $10.

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Gina Belliveau. All Ages. 6 pm. Nick Deonigi. All Ages. 8 pm. NC.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Benefit For Squeak & Squawk, with Derek Kelley & The Speedwobbles, Humble Cub, Tallest Tree. 9 pm. $7.

  • "I guess, if we were stars, you'd call it an all-star band, but I don't know if we are," laughs Derek Kelley. Even though Kelley's being modest in his assessment of the Speedwobbles, that's about as close to an apt description of the band as you'll find. Not only is it fronted by Kelley, who found success with his earlier band, Wallpaper, but the rest of the seven-member group features performers from the Vells, the Brite Futures (formerly Natalie Portman's Shaved Head), Abraham and the New Faces. It's a sort of local super-group, an assembly of preternaturally talented and charismatic musicians who have successful projects in their own rights. The document that has been produced by this group - the Speedwobbles' debut LP, Bourgeoisie Marmalade - is representative of this kind of talent. To read the full feature, click here. — Rev. AM

Red Lion Hotel Olympia - Westside. The Russ Hubley Trio. 8 pm. NC.

The Red Room Tacoma - Downtown. Hear The Sirens, Strike To Survive. All Ages. 6:30 pm. $5.

The Spar Olympia. Billy D. 8 pm. NC.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma. Jerry Miller Jam. 9 pm.

Uncle Thurm's Finger Licken Ribs & Chicken  Tacoma. G Street Jazz Series. Reservations recommended. 8-11 pm. NC.

NIGHT MOVES: Legend of Bigfoot, Death By Stars, Redneck Girlfriend, Curtis Salgado, Kareem Kandi and others ...

Dark Snack performs tonight at The Den in downtown Tacoma.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

4th Ave Ale House Olympia - Downtown. Pizza Klatch Benefit, with Func Pro Tunc. 9 pm.

Bob's Java Jive Tacoma - Central. Legend of Bigfoot, James Coates, Vile Red Falcons, DJ Darren Selector. 8 pm.

  • It was mid-summer when Legend of Bigfoot returned from dormancy, and - quite simply - Tacoma's scene has been a whole lot more rockin' since. The rarest of bands - able to entertain hipsters and metal-heads alike - the LOB is on the move, playing a show this Saturday at Bob's Java Jive with Vile Red Falcons and James Coates, not to mention re-releasing their debut LP and premiering a first-ever music video, and finishing up work on a new CD due out sometime in the spring. As they say, "It's all happening" for Legend of Bigfoot. The big, fat maraschino cherry on top of all of it? As regular KISW 99.9FM listeners can attest to, Legend of Bigfoot has been the "Loud and Local Band of the Week" this last week - scoring a prime interview on the station and turning the whole region on to a fresh local sound that pays homage to many of the KISW staples.  Dig it. - Matt Driscoll

Cork! A Wine Bar Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Suzanne Brewer. 8 pm.

The Den at urbanXchange Tacoma - Downtown. Death By Stars, Dark Snack, Dungeon Science. All Ages. 7-10 pm. NC.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. The Return Of Redneck Girlfriend Show, with Aces Up, Graceland. 6 pm. $7.

  • Redneck Girlfriend's description of itself incorporates many utterances of stuff like "yee-haw!" and references to Yankees. The band seems to be about creating the illusion of country music - shrouding it over hard rock hearts and delivering it in a blistering fury. But for as much as the band embraces this surface sound, Redneck Girlfriend manages to cut to the real essence of country music, in much the same way hip-hop possesses many of the same ethos as classic country: Redneck Girlfriend is about drinking beers and having good times, even as they squint their eyes in manly ways to keep from having a teardrop land in one of those beers. In the end, though, it's about that lively rolling sound, and Redneck Girlfriend delivers that in spades. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Curtis Salgado, The Red Hot Blues Sisters. 8 pm. $15-$18.

Morso Wine Bar Gig Harbor. Elizabeth Cook. 8 pm. $25.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. The Hunting Accident, Lozen, Help. 9 pm.

  • In addition to the Big Star influence that infects just about every power pop song ever produced, the Hunting Accident has its own internal power pop lineage to draw from. Hunting Accident members Nate Greely, Aaron Stuart and Travis Shettel cut their teeth in the mid-‘90s in the bands Arlo and Piebald. Both incorporated the era's tendency to make songs that were revealing and personal, while at the same time being goofy and almost tossed-off. Arlo's career culminated in the release of two albums through Sub Pop in the early 2000s, while Piebald hung around for a while longer, but both bands eventually came to a close. Ray Gibson's Caballeros Club Tacoma - South. Kingfish. 9 pm.

The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. Billy Farmer and Sway. The band will be paying tribute to the Rolling Stones for this gig. All Ages. 8-11pm. NC.

Traditions Cafe and World Folk Art Olympia - Downtown. Mary Flower. All Ages. 8 pm. $8-$12.

Uncle Sam's American Bar & Grill Spanaway. Fro Blow Birthday Bash, with Blood & Thunder, DA 27, Decibal Point, Days Of Never. 9 pm.

Uncle Thurm's Finger Lickin' Chicken and Ribs Tacoma - Lincoln District. The Kareem Kandi Band. 8-11 pm. NC.

Waterstreet Cafe Olympia. Late Night Concert, featuring Joe Baque, Steve Luceno, Michael Olson, Dennis Hastings. 9:30 pm. NC.

Waves Studio Olympia. Sean Gaskell with Pachi Pamwe. All Ages. 7:30-10:30 pm. $10.

NIGHT MOVES: High On Fire, Crepusculum, Dirt Nasty, Catatone, Doxology and others ...

Space Band rocks The Swiss tonight.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

Cryptatropa Bar Olympia - Downtown. Port Of The Sun, Crepusculum, DJ Badger Acid. 9 pm.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. High On Fire, Indian, Unhailoed, Bloodhunger. All Ages. 6 pm. $12-$15.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Dirt Nasty, with special guest The Breaklites. 9 pm. $10.

  • First it was Mickey Avalon. Tonight, Jazzbones welcomes "rapper" Dirty Nasty to Tacoma, founder of the Dyslexic Speedreaders (of which Avalon and Andre Legacy were also a part of), and - more importantly - Simon fucking Rex from former MTV fame. That's right. Dirty Nasty is Simon Rex, and these days his gig revolves around producing ridiculously funny hip-hop tracks pertaining to drugs, the '80s, cocaine, sex, even more drugs and the inability to dance ... not necessarily in that order. According to the show's billing, Dirty Nasty will come to T-town prepared to bust out his "hits," including "1980." Cue the hook in your head: "I got a gold chain ... I'm on co-caine ..." Honestly, there's no way this show won't be entertaining. The Breaklites and DJ Pedro are also on the bill. - Matt Driscoll

Louie G's Pizzeria Fife. Catatone, High Noon Horizon, Dread Effect. All Ages. 8 pm.

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Rick & Russ. All Ages. 8 pm.

Maxwell's Speakeasy Tacoma. Lance Buller Trio. All Ages. 7-10 pm. NC.

The Spar Olympia. James Coates. 8 pm. NC.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Doxology. 9 pm.

The Swiss Tacoma - Downtown. Space Band. 9 pm.

NIGHT MOVES: Voxxy Vallejo, Pearl Django, The Ellis Armor, Meowtain, Helms Alee, Frank Fairfield and others ...

They Charge Like Warriors will rock Hell's Kitchen tonight.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

4th Ave Ale House Olympia - Downtown. The Jupiter Order, Tinman, Voxxy Vallejo. 9 pm.

Art House Designs Olympia - Eastside. Pearl Django, with special guest Vince Brown. All Ages. 8 pm.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. The Ellis Armor, From Heroes To Legends, Spare Me Poseidon, They Charge Like Warriors, Vices. 6 pm.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Nearly Dan (Steely Dan tribute). 8 pm. $10-$13. Violin Vs. Vinyl, with Kytami, The PhonoGraff, Jay Tablet. 12 pm. $5.

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Graham Crackers. All Ages. 8 pm.

Midnight Sun Olympia. Downtown. Meowtain, Maxines, Basemint, Monster Trap, 8 pm. $5.

  • Meowtain is a restlessly churning ball of jittery exuberance. The band's music seems to benefit from an overabundance of ideas and whims - each member racing to bring them to the fore. Shouts emerge, breathless, from behind a wall of crackling guitars, the occasional trumpet and vigorously shuddering tambourines. It sounds, in a word, very much like Olympia. This lo-fi, homespun punk sound that has been steadily produced in the city for many years seems almost bred into the music of Meowtain. What Meowtain brings to the table is a kind of boundless energy, which I think you will find positively infectious. This is the second Olympia All Ages Project-produced show to be held at the Midnight Sun, while the Northern seeks out a permanent residence elsewhere. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Nate Dybevik's piano restoration Spaceworks Tacoma space Tacoma - Hilltop. Iceborg, Operation ID, Porch Grapes. All Ages. 7 pm. More details here.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Helms Alee, Hot Victory, Extralone, Argonaut. 9 pm. $5.

  • Hot Victory might be ambient if it weren't for all of those drums. A three-piece made up of two drummers and a guy on keys, the tones being produced are cold, futuristic and drawn out. They are accompanied by a two-person assault of primal, pounding drums - a stampede of sound, offset by a steady drone. It's a lot to take in, all at once. Hot Victory means to be overwhelming, I'm sure, and the band succeeds in spades. When they hit those breakdowns, where the drums start to sound more scattershot and disconnected, and the synths begin to pulse and stab, it's fascinating to watch them find the beat of the next song into which they'll go careening. All of this order and chaos, sharing space - one pushing the other, the other always resisting. - Rev. AM

The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. New Orleans Jazz Cafe Quintet. This is trad jazz,a bit like Dixieland. All Ages. 8-11 pm. NC.

Traditions Cafe and World Folk Art Olympia - Downtown. Reilly & Maloney. All Ages. 8 pm. $12-$17.

Urban Grace Church Tacoma - Downtown. Frank Fairfield with members of Sons of Warren Oates and Ravenna Woods. The Warehouse presents this shindig. All Ages. 7:30 pm. $8 at brownpapertickets.com, $10 door.

  • You've got to give it to the folks over at The Warehouse. At this point a production company (of sorts) specializing in bringing intimate, artistic and artist-friendly shows to Tacoma, The Warehouse looks to have hit pay dirt again with tonight's performance by Frank Fairfield, an old school (and I mean ooold school) gee-tar, fiddle and banjo player who many fell in love last summer at Doe Bay Fest. "His music immediately transports you to a dusty trail stop and a crackling fire. He is well versed in early American music and fits the part perfectly. Trust me, you have to see it to believe it," says The Warehouse's Adam Ydstie in email. "We at The Warehouse have worked hard to create a special evening for a small audience to experience Frank Fairfield as well as a host of other amazing musicians from the area. This performance will be on the stage at Urban Grace sans any amplification and lit primarily by candles. We will have chairs and pillows on the stage for the audience to sit back, relax, and enjoy the music."  The show will also include members of Sons of Warren Oates and Ravenna Woods. - Matt Driscoll

LakeBridge Forza Lakewood. Crimson Thread. All Ages. 7-9 pm. NC.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Wax Idols, Terry Malts, Red Hex. 9 pm. $5.

  • As I'm sure we're all aware, there's a sort of renaissance happening right now with young bands rediscovering and reinterpreting the sunny, fuzzy garage pop sounds of the past few decades, particularly in California. These are bands that have the benefit of an enormous back catalogue of music to sift through and disseminate however they wish - to mix and match and come up with a composite sound, which will exist thanks entirely to the passing of time and muddying of cultural touchstones. One such band is Wax Idols, a steadily rising fixture in this California scene. Headed by Hether Fortune, a former member of contemporaries like Hunx and His Punx and Bare Wires, Wax Idols has a similarly freewheeling sound that allows the band to experiment in punk, new wave and early Goth. Fortune is adamant, however, at addressing certain comparisons. Read what she had to say here. — Rev. Adam McKinney

The Spar Olympia. Paul Mauer. 8 pm. NC.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Murder Masquerade Party, with Sad Face, The Hardcount, Cityfaire, Angels Of Mayhem Burlesque, DJ Traxx, DJ Berry, Magician Cary Durgin. 9 pm.

NIGHT MOVES: C.F.A., Death by Stars, Unearth The Dead, Night of the Living Tribute Bands and others ...

True Holland will rock Stonegate Pizza tonight.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

4th Ave Ale House Olympia - Downtown. Halloween Costume Contest, featuring No Living Witness, Lenore, This Is Treason. 9 pm.

Capitol Theater Olympia - Downtown. Night Of The Living Tribute Band, featuring tributes to Dolly Parton, TRex, Bauhaus, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, and KISS, hosted by Morgan Picton as "Dangerfield's Monster". All Ages. 8:30 pm. $5-$8.

  • For the past 11 years, in honor of Halloween, the Olympia Film Society has hosted an event simply known as Night of the Living Tribute Bands. These shows are rare windows into the musical lives of local performers whom we may know from seeing around town, but haven't yet learned of their inner devotions. Frequently, the tribute bands that perform at Night of the Living Tribute Bands are one-offs, assembled specifically for the event and made up of jumbled about musicians from various local bands. "Everyone just comes together for one night," says the Olympia Film Society's Audrey Henley, organizer of Night of the Living Tribute Bands. "We're really fortunate that we have so many great musicians in our town." To read Rev. Adam McKinney's full story, click here. Rev. Adam McKinney

Dawson's Bar and Grill Tacoma - South. Tim Hall Band. 9 pm.

Dorky's Barcade Tacoma - Downtown. Dorky's Halloween Show, featuring Death By Stars, The Hyper-Space Sludge Junkies, The Autonomics, The Dirty Words. 8 pm. NC.

  • The string of words that make up the name Death by Stars sounds at once full of portent and utterly frivolous. This dichotomy seems to seep into and help define the band's music as well. Combining the biggest, most direct qualities of punk, electronica and psych-rock, the band has cooked up a cutting, immediately hooky sound. There's an invigorating quality to Death by Stars that seems to transcend their basic formula of spacey, psychedelia-informed vocals encased in programmed beats, exploding into life-sized dance-punk refrains. In a live setting, Death by Stars veers into performance art territory, with light shows and costumes. It's a delirious soup - all surface, really. But what a surface it is. To read Rev. Adam McKinney's full feature, click here. - Rev. AM

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Unearth The Dead CD Release, with Unhailoed, Onset The Shores, Deathbed Confessions, Burn The Harbor, He Whose Ox Is Gored. 6 pm. $5.

The Hub Tacoma - Stadium District. James Coates. 9 pm. NC.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Halloween Costume Party, featuring Current Swell, Mighty High, Violet Isle, Kaya Flyte. 8 pm. $10.

Louie G's Pizzeria Fife. Palooka, Cody Foster Army, The Rikk Beatty Band. All Ages. 8 pm.

  • There's a reason Tacoma's C.F.A. (Cody Foster Army) is a T-Town music scene staple, and it's only partly due to the band's breakneck thrashing or topnotch facial hair. These dudes (guitarist Dave Takata, drummer Reno Dave Marseillan and Foster) have been there, done that in Tacoma, and they've got the scars and welts to prove it. In the past the Volcano has referred to C.F.A. as a "dynamic," and "powerful," band packing a "heavy old-school hardcore attitude and an uncompromising DIY approach." It's all still true. Saturday, in the band's typical fashion, C.F.A. will lead a pre-Halloween Halloween party at Louie G's Pizzeria in Fife, with Palooka and the Rikk Beatty Band also on the sure-to-be-rocking bill. As with all throwdowns at Louie G's, the show is all ages. Foster tells me kids will "shit themselves" when they see the movie-quality costumed Darth Vader and Chewbacca scheduled to attend. - Matt Driscoll

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Nick Sandy. All Ages. 6 pm. Robert Boyd. All

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Justin, Amber & Tryg's Birthday Halloween Bash, with Fall From Grace, Cadillac Radio, Alabaster, Anchor The Tide, True Holland, The Tempting Tarts Burlesque. All Ages. 6 pm.

The Swiss Tacoma - Downtown. Halloween Party featuring Kry. 9 pm.

Theatre on the Square Tacoma - Downtown. 3 Glorias Flamenco En Vivo, featuring Saray Munoz, Pedro Cortes, Savannah Fuentes. All Ages. 8 pm. $12-$25.

  • For the uninitiated, there are apparently three main components of flamenco: cante (voice), toque (guitar) and baile (dance). From what we understand it takes all three to make flamenco magic, and that's just what 3 Glorias Flamenco en Vivo should offer up Saturday at the Broadway Center in Tacoma. Bringing singer Saray Muñoz (all the way from Spain) to the stage, along with accompaniment from renowned guitarist Pedro Cortes, 3 Glorias Flamenco en Vivo should entertain and provide a bit of culture - which is way better than anything another Saturday night in front of the boob tube was going to do for you. – Weekly Volcano

Traditions Cafe and World Folk Art Olympia - Downtown. Vince Brown, Paul Anastasio, Dan Tyack, Cary Black. All Ages. 8 pm. $12.

Uncle Sam's American Bar & Grill Spanaway. Tacoma ABATE Halloween Bash, with Reloaded. 9 pm.

Igneous Rocks will perform tonight at the Red Wind Casino.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

4th Ave Ale House Olympia - Downtown. Lijie, True Margrit, Roxi Copland. 9 pm.

Art House Designs Olympia - Downtown. The Steve Munger Group, Hardcoretet. 8 pm. $10.

  • Hardcoretet is a Seattle-based instrumental quartet that performs original material drawing from jazz, rock, soul and improvised music, among other styles. The band presents music written by each of its members and is reminiscent of fusion groups like Return to Forever and Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, as well as more current modern jazz groups like Chris Potter's Underground and Kneebody.

Backstage Bar & Grill Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Malfunkshun, Silver, Guns of Nevada. 9 pm. $10.

HG Bistro Puyallup. Ed Taylor & TaylorMade. 8 pm. NC.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Goldwing, Swampy Draws, Sleight of Man. 9 pm.

  • Tonight's show at Hell's Kitchen is advertised as a benefit for some people named Bianca and Joe. The proceeds will go to help offset their medical costs. I don't have much more information than that, but I'm in. It would good to do something nice for strangers even if the lineup for this show weren't so bitchin'. Along with the heavy rock of Tummler and Solomon and Sleight of Man, expect the expansive post-rock of Goldwing and-a personal favorite of mine-the bizarro punk jug-band that is Swampy Draws. This show's got just about all of the bases covered, so I dare say that you'd be a fool to miss it. Hearing Swampy Draws cover "Hey Ya" would be worth the price of admission. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Bump Kitchen. 8 pm. $10.

Mom's Rocket will rock Louie G's tonight.

Amocat Cafe Tacoma - Downtown. Amocat Live! featuring the Amocat House Band. All Ages. 7 pm.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Eklektic Presents Violin Vs. Vinyl, featuring Kytami, Mista Chatman & The Phonograph, Jay Tablet. 8 pm. $7.

  • Show up at Jazzbones tonight and you'll encounter a pulsing, breathing, three-pronged attack of art-meets-music. The gist of this gig won't be much different than the image the name conjures up, combining the mastery of the "violinistextremist" known as Kytami, billed as "perhaps Canada's most diverse and engaging fiddle player," the DJ skills of The Phonograff, a venerable turntable wizard with almost two decades of experience in the game, and reggae-bred mic-master Mista Chatman - mixing the varied ingredients into a sight and sound rarely seen. Together, the group claims to be, "getting ready to bring their crazy ninja skills and infectious energy to you with a fresh new sound they're calling ‘Violin vs. Vinyl.'" Get it? You will. And you've never heard anything like it before. - Matt Driscoll

Louie G's Pizzeria Fife. Voxxy Vallejo, Mom's Rocket, Kurt Lindsay. All Ages. 8 pm.

  • You have to give it to Voxxy Vallejo: the local old school rock band knows how to throw a birthday party for lead singer Sherrie Voxx Minter. It's become a time-honored tradition of sorts, or at least it seems, with the Weekly Volcano databases revealing public birthday parties for Voxxy at local clubs in town as far back as 2009. And, as we all know, 2009 was an eternity ago. Tonight, Voxxy will celebrate yet another birthday, but this time she'll have company - sharing the honor with the all-ages club set to host said birthday party, Louie G's in Fife. With a bill that includes Tacoma favorites Kurt Lindsay, Mom's Rocket, and - of course - Voxxy Vallejo, this is one night that's sure to rival any past celebratory effort. Some things just get better with age. The show is free, but throw down a donation if you're so moved. - Weekly Volcano

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Seastar. All Ages. 8 pm.

Massimo's University Place. The Cold 102's - Anthony Estrada's blues trio with Curtis Smith and Aaron Lehman - plays funky blues. 8-11 pm. NC.

Metronome Coffee Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Heidi Vladyka, Stephanie Anne Johnson and Josh Phillips. All Ages. 8 pm-11 pm. NC.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Side Show Spook-tacular, featuring The Gritty City Sirens, Dessi De Vine, Heather Hostility, Dean Jameson, DJ Buckets the Pony, the Fun Police, the Mesmerizing Magic Steve, Jeremy Gregory, Tacoma Eclectic Flame. 9 pm.

  • A proper burlesque show - in the vaudevillian sense of the term, not the hipster reclaiming sense - is all about excess and spectacle. It's a variety show, featuring not just the burlesque dancers, but music, comedy and oddities. Tacoma's resident burlesque troupe, the Gritty City Sirens, will be throwing a Halloween-themed "Side Show Spook-tacular," which does well to reflect these different aspects of burlesque. In addition to the Sirens' always engaging performances, there will be appearances by Tacoma artist/juggler Jeremy Gregory, a fire dance display and magic. Thrown on top of all of this will be musical sets from DJ Buckets the Pony and the country/reggae/punk rockers, the Fun Police. It will be a night of sensory overload and, perhaps, just a little bit of spectacular chaos. - Rev. Adam McKinney

The Spar Olympia. Paul Mauer. 8 pm. NC.

Pantages Theater Tacoma - Downtown. The Musical Box performs Genesis The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway rock opera. 7:30 p.m. $29-$75.

  • Concept records and rock operas aren't what they used to be. Hell, records in general aren't what they used to be. But Friday, the Musical Box - a Quebec-based Genesis tribute act that bills itself as the only band in the entire world to cozy up to Genesis and Peter Gabriel enough to acquire the performing rights and access to archives, audio tracks and the original images for The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - will perform the classic rock opera, in its entirety, in Tacoma, at the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts. – WV

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Jerry Miller Jam. 9 pm. NC.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

4th Ave Ale House Olympia - Downtown. Olympia Arts Walk, featuring Flowmotion. 6 pm. NC.

Dawson's Bar and Grill Tacoma - South. Highrollers. 9 pm. NC.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Big Wheel Stunt Show, Valis, Legend Of Big Foot, Umber Sleeping, Tallest Tree, DJ Darren Selector. 6 pm. NC.

  • Tallest Tree has been steadily establishing itself as an accomplished indie rock band in these parts since 2009. Taking cues from more math-leaning acts like Built to Spill, as well as the angular freakouts of Modest Mouse and indie touchstones like Death Cab for Cutie, Tallest Tree has established a pastiche of a sound in a genre that essentially is nothing more than a pastiche. The band's strength is rising above the rabble and delivering the goods with strong songwriting and melodies - a sound immediately familiar, while firmly distinct. Additionally, a certain progressive rock bent begins to creep in when Tallest Tree lose themselves in a song and decide to take you on a journey. Far from a jam band, though, Tallest Tree always makes sure to steer you hard back into the form of the song. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Red Hot Blues Sisters, Blues Buskers, with Brian Butler, Paula Boggs. 8 pm. $7.

Louie G's Pizzeria Fife. Tin Man, The Moss Brothers Band. All Ages. 8 pm.

Massimo's University Place. The The Cold 102's (Anthony Estrada's blues trio with Curtis Smith and Aaron Lehman) plays funky blues. 8-11pm. NC.

Maxwell's Speakeasy Tacoma. Lance Buller Trio. All Ages. 7-10 pm. NC.

Metronome Coffee Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Bluegrass Hoedown featuring Barleywine Revue and Squirrel Butter. All Ages. 8 pm. $5.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Basemint, The Shivas, Sugar Sugar Sugar. 9 pm.

Rialto Theater Tacoma - Downtown. Charlie Musselwhite. All Ages. 7:30 pm. $29-$49.

  • He's been called damn near every superlative in the book - and for good reason. When you hear Charlie Musselwhite is a "harmonic master," as the promotional material for tonight's show at the Rialto Theater in Tacoma suggests, it's no lie. Dude is that good. He's a blues legend. With a career that's spanned nearly five decades, and with more notches on his accomplishment belt than could possible be noted in this small space (although, as a tip of the iceberg, Musselwhite received two Blues Music Awards earlier this year from the Blues Foundation, "Traditional Blues Male Artist of the Year," and "Best Instrumentalist- Harmonica"), Musselwhite has done just about all there is to do in the blues music business. As part of a show co-presented by the Immanuel Presbyterian Blues Vespers, Musselwhite once again does Tacoma. Having seen Musselwhite at Jazzbones, I would expect nothing short of brilliance. - Matt Driscoll

The Spar Olympia - Downtown. Billy D. 8 pm. NC.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Jerry Miller Jam. 9 pm. NC.
