  • A band like Cody Foster's Army doesn't come along every day - a dynamic and powerful three-piece with a heavy old school hardcore attitude and an uncompromising DIY approach. Consisting of members of an assortment of legendary Tacoma bands from the last two decades, these guys are no strangers to local rock. Foster plays bass and sings, Dave Takata is the crazy guitarist, and "Reno" David Marseillan is the thundering drummer. Together they are making a name for themselves with a fierce set of raging tunes. - Weekly Volcano

  • There are far too many people who would be ashamed to say they like something as fundamentally shallow and conventional as AC/DC, but I'm not one of them. I think this is part of why I've grown to love Big Wheel Stunt Show. They don't sound like AC/DC, per se. They have a little more energy than the Aussies' relentless groove and a little more of a punk rock, grungy tinge. But on some level they occupy the same headspace within the dark bowels of my musically eccentric brainpan. - Joe Izenman

Theatre on the Square Tacoma - Downtown. Zydeco Dance Lessons and party with Jeffrey Broussard & The Creole Cowboys. Dance lessons at 6:30 pm. 21+. 7:30 pm. $39.

  • In a brilliant move, the Broadway Center will transform its Theatre on the Square into an old-fashioned social hall Friday night setting up Broussard and his Creole Cowboys on the stage above a cleared-out dance floor. Yup, the seats will be replaced with sweaty, happy dancers. To make the dancers even happier, the Barefoot Collective pros will provide free zydeco dance lessons an hour before the show. Expect the music to be an infectious rhythm that will be more rubbery syncopation than predictable stomp. Gumbo and authentic drink specials at the no-host cash bar complete the experience. — Michael Swan

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Arbouretum, Tattered Dress, Endless Boogie, Eternal Tapestry. All Ages. 8 pm. $5.

  • Time to break your wizard bong out of storage: Wednesday's show at Northern promises to be intensely psychedelic. Arbouretum are set to perform with Oregonian jammers Eternal Tapestry, their comrades on a brief West Coast tour that's bringing both bands' gargantuan riffing and hypnotic arrangements to eager ears from SoCal to Seattle. Arbouretum - the quartet of Corey Allender, Matthew Pierce, Buck Carey, and songwriter/guitarist Dave Heumann - make music that's simultaneously intellectual and intoxicating. Heumann's lyrics are inspired by heady sources like Gnostic philosophy and Carl Jung's hallucinogenic confessional Red Book, and contain third-eye-opening lines like "Take me out beyond the barriers of what is said is done" from "Destroying to Save," the third song on The Gathering, the Baltimore band's fifth studio album. - Jason Baxter

  • These six-time Grammy winners pride themselves on preaching the wonders of traditional Irish music to the world. Not only have they uncovered a wealth of traditional Irish music from centuries past, but they make it their own with a style that is as exhilarating as it is definitive. Their home country honored them with the title of Ireland's Musical Ambassadors. If they were good enough to perform for the pope, as they did in 1979, then they're good enough for you. — Michael Swan

NIGHT MOVES: Blues Vespers, Junkyard Jane, Hausu, Chief, Bacchus, Long Beach Rehab

Outdoor Voices rocks Northern in Olympia tonight.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

Ballyhoo Irish Pub Tumwater. Sean-nos Festival Afterparty Irish Session. 6 pm. NC.

The Brotherhood Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Chief, Bacchus. 9 pm. $3.

  • This will be the most incredible show you will experience. Ever. Bacchus is one of few bands to actually hit the brown note. (You know, a rumble so deep in your gut, induced by stacks of amps and low-fi bass lines that you actually produce a shard in your pants.) Chief is the revolutionary leader of any punk music to come out of Olympia. And they can still kick anyone's ass. Read the story behind this show here.Nikki Talotta

Dawson's Bar and Grill Tacoma - South. Blues Jam, hosted by Tim Hall. 8 pm.

Immanuel Presbyterian Church Tacoma - Northend. Blues Vespers, featuring Bill Simms Jr. & Mark LaVoie. All Ages. 5 pm. NC.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Long Beach Rehab, featuring members of Bad Brains, LBC Sublime, with Michael J. Harris, Under Sin, Corson Swift. 9 pm.

Lady Luck Cowgirl Up Tacoma - Parkland. Country jam featuring Broken Trail. 4 pm.

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Open Mic, with Denny Foreman & Friends. All Ages. 6 pm. NC.

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Brainstorm, Sick Jumps, Hausu, Outdoor Voices. All Ages. 8 pm. $5.

  • On "She's a Babe," you can barely make out Ben Funkhouser singing "I miss my mom and my cats," a line that's as painfully earnest as it is deeply ironic - at least when you consider Hausu's namesake: a gruesome, impossibly over-the-top Japanese horror classic in which a fluffy white cat does some horrible, horrible things. While they're far from reaching the kind of critical infamy and legendary cult status that Hausu the film enjoys, Hausu the band are already turning heads and winning fans in the Seattle and Portland music communities, and not without reason. Their take on Orange Juicy post-punk is joyous, with shades of Springsteen's small town angst in its sing-along choruses, and despite the relative youth of these four Reed College students, Hausu are seriously talented musicians. - Jason Baxter

The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. Junkyard Jane. 7 pm. NC.

Steilacoom Pub and Grill Steilacoom. Sunday open mic with Jeanlizabeth. 8 pm. NC.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Sunday Jazz Dinner Show. All Ages. 5-8 pm. NC.

Louie G's Pizzeria Fife. The Plastards, Apache Chief, Wheelies, The Trashholes. All Ages. 8 pm.

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Charles Mack. All Ages. 8:30 pm. $7.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. The Cosmonauts, Night Beats, Red Hex. 9:30 pm. $5.

  • Cosmonauts may just be the one-millionth psychedelic garage band that I've written about in my time at the Weekly Volcano, and I tell you it's the funniest thing: Though they hail from California, they sound like they could have just as easily been born out in our fair, gritty city. Something about performing in basements and garages seems to bring the grittiness out in any band. Cosmonauts share time equally in mind-melting squalls of Doors-esque acid rock and bursts of sweet, jumpy garage pop confection. This bodes well for them as they will share bill with the thunderous Night Beats and the bratty, eclectic punk rock of Red Hex. It would be more than advisable to bring some earplugs to The New Frontier. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Rock the Dock Pub & Grill Tacoma - Downtown. Billy Roy Duo. 8 pm. NC.

Red Wind Casino Yelm. Jonathan Harris. 8:30 pm. NC.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Kashmir (Led Zeppelin tribute). 9 pm.

NIGHT MOVES: The Bismarck, Nightgowns, Phunkatron, Mahnhammer ...

Astrovan rocks the 4th Ave Ale House tonight.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

4th Ave Ale House Olympia - Downtown. Kidnap The Past, Elbow Coulee, Astrovan. 9 pm.

Bob's Java Jive Tacoma - Central. Kramer, The Bismarck, Apache Chief, Wyoming Young & Strong. 9 pm.

  • Rarely do Washington rockers sound this Midwestern. The Bismarck is a Seattle quartet of North Dakotan expats with a penchant for hard-hitting, hickory-smoked rock 'n' roll. It seems appropriate that they'll be playing Bob's Java Jive with a band called Wyoming Young and Strong (named for a line in that state's official song). And while the Bismarck shares rambunctious energy with Apache Chief, another band on the bill, they have a singular, ostensive interest in red-blooded Americana; the first word heard on their latest record Great Plains is a throatily-shouted "America!" and the song  "Not If You Were the Last Team Gina Fan on Earth" features the lyric, "Take me back to the Great Lakes/Take me back to red states/Take me back to the Midwest" (the title references - perhaps satirically - one of Seattle's lesbian hip-hop duos). Read the full story here.Jason Baxter

The Hub Tacoma - Stadium District. Fingertips. 9 pm.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Valentine's Day Kickoff Party, featuring Cherry Cherry (Neil Diamond Tribute). 8 pm. $10.

Koncrete Studios Olympia - Eastside. We Out Here All Ages Showcase, featuring Metaphantom, Cyrus, Young Sash, Mr. Twist, Kyle Duffey, Young & Brave and more. All Ages. 7 pm. $10.

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Les Jupes, Mirror Mirror. 9 pm.

  • The 20th Anniversary re-release of British shoegaze group Ride's seminal album Nowhere was recently awarded a "Best New Reissue" commendation and lusted-after high score from taste-making news and reviews site Pitchfork Media, evidence that (in some critical circles, anyway) bleary, reverb-soaked ear candy will continue to be celebrated, appreciated and encouraged. Olympia's Mirror Mirror are unabashedly aiming for a smudged, smothering shoegaze sound, though their (relatively) clear vocals and occasional acoustic jangles set them apart from run-of-the-mill Jesus and Mary Chain imitators. Their music is more in line with bands from shoegaze's immediate legacy (Brian Jonestown Massacre, et al.); guitar-centric, vintage-influenced rock that shimmers as much as it simmers, and sounds totally righteous at full blast. - JB

The Loft on Cherry Olympia - Downtown. Countdown to Love 3 with Pizza T's Z Kamp, High Ceiling, Danny Kelly, Bodhi Drip. Includes a barter fair. Beer garden for 21+. All Ages. 7 pm. $5.

Louie G's Pizzeria Fife. James Hunnicut. All Ages. 8 pm.

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Stephen Heinzman Trio. All Ages. 8:30 pm. NC.

Matrix Coffee House Lewis County. Romantic Song Contest! Winners in three categories: Best Original Song, Best Cover Song, Best Youth Performer (18 or younger). Winners chosen by audience participation. All Ages. 7 pm.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. The Purrs, The Drug Purse, Spanish For 100. 9 pm.

  • Over their 10-year career, the Purrs have exuded, above all else, a supreme sense of confidence. Every song is lavishly produced and drenched in gorgeous guitar work, every lyric almost off-handedly intoned by lead singer Jima. The casual mixing and matching of rockabilly and psychedelia and shoegaze - it all speaks to the kind of intrinsic confidence (and the talent to back it up) that all rock bands strive for. The seeming effortlessness of the Purrs only adds to their hypnotic allure. Comparisons with bands like the Brian Jonestown Massacre or the Verve notwithstanding, the Purrs have managed to quietly carve out a niche for themselves in the admittedly overcrowded psychedelia scene. Saturday finds them sharing a bill with lively punk rockers Red Hex, an excitingly unlikely pairing if ever there was one. - Rev. AM

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Cave Singers, Whalebones, Takhoma. All Ages. 8 pm.

  • Let's imagine a band comprised of steaming momentum that has been abruptly decompressed and cooled in a folk-rock mold. Its members cut their teeth in art punk and prog-rock outfits, all wound up energy and attitude, when suddenly, in 2007, they came together in a kinder, gentler recording project. This project would develop into the Cave Singers. Later in 2007, they would sign to Matador Records. Speaking with Marty Lund, drummer for the Cave Singers, this transition doesn't come off nearly as abrupt as one might picture it. Coming out of Cobra High, a Seattle math-rock band, Lund happened to be living nearby Derek Fudesco (formerly of Pretty Girls Make Graves and Murder City Devils) and Pete Quirk (of Hint Hint) when they started casually collaborating. Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Mom's Rocket, From The Sea, Gebular, Tangent, Plastic Joe. 9 pm. $5.

  • Believe it or not, the Volcano's Matt Driscoll originally turned Bobble Tiki on to Mom's Rocket, a band hailing from Olympia, Wash., but about as unapologetically rock (no art about it) as you can get. In an awesome way. At the time of Bobble Tiki's introduction, Mom's Rocket was the "house band" for KJR 950 AM, a sports-talk station. Naturally, they also happened to be big sports fans. Something tells Bobble Tiki they'll be pulling for the Packers on Sunday, like all good Hawk fans. Driscoll interviewed bassist Randy Keller at the time. Check it out in Bobble Tiki's column. – Bobble Tiki

The Peabody Waldorf Gallery Tacoma - Downtown. Drew Grow Benefit with Big Sur, Elk & Boar, Alexander Graham Bell. 8 .m. $5.

  • Roughly three weeks ago, Portlander Drew Grow (of the Pastors' Wives fame) was in a devastating automobile accident, which left him saddled with piles of medical bills, including costs covering a stay in the hospital, surgery and the months of rehabilitation he will likely need. In order to help soften the blow of the hospital bill's crude insult to injury, five benefit shows have been arranged in the Pacific Northwest, and the Peabody Waldorf Gallery will be host to Tacoma's contribution tonight. – Rev. • Everyone knows about world-class rock guitarist and top hat enthusiast Saul "Slash" Hudson's axe-slinging exploits with Guns N‘ Roses, Velvet Revolver and as a lone, hard-rocking wolf (when he opens for Ozzy Osbourne tonight, it will be a sans-"snakepit" solo performance), but seldom is Slash the Actor discussed. The man's appeared in everything from The Anna Nicole Show to the rockumentary Anvil!. Click here for a survey of some of his other notable onscreen appearances. – Jason Baxter

Night Moves: Clinton Fearon, Malcolm Clark Band, Dockyard Derby Dames Fundraiser, Goldfinch, Ryan Shea Smith ...

Hella Sunshine plays The New Frontier Lounge tonight.

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

Conquering Lion Tacoma - South. Clinton Fearon, Dub Lounge International, DJ Qualifi. 8 pm. All Ages. $5-$20.

  • Clinton "Basie" Fearon is counted among Jamaica's most talented musicians by peers and professionals in the realm of reggae. He was a house musician for Coxsonne Dodd's Studio One and Lee "Scratch" Perry's Black Ark Studio. He recorded many of Perry's best-known songs, including "Roast Fish" and "Cornbread," which features one of Fearon's most famous and infectious bass lines. He also composed some everlasting noggin-nodders for Yabby You, Jimmy Riley, Max Romeo, Junior Byles and many others. Friday at the upstart Conquering Lion on South Tacoma Way, as part of the "Reggae Consciousness - Spirit of Bob Marley" event, fans look forward to being soothed and soul-charged by delicious bass riffs, guitar licks, percussion accents and downright powerful vocals. Fearon is a living legend among reggae musicians, for good reason. - Weekly Volcano

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Dockyard Derby Dames Fundraiser, with Psycho 78, The Enemies Of, Vile Display Of Humanity, The Dead Giveaways, Listen Louder. 9 pm. $5.

  • In a Friday full of musical options, it's going to be hard for Tacoma to deny one very worthy cause strapping up tight for a good time at Hell's Kitchen. As part of a fundraiser for the beloved roller derby force known as the Dockyard Derby Dames (who, by no coincidence, kick off their season Feb. 26 at Pierce College), Psycho 78 headlines a show also featuring the frantic sounds of the Enemies Of, Vile Display of Humanity, the Dead Giveaways and Listen Louder. In addition to the scorched punk offerings of the always-pumping Psycho 78 (a three-piece of power made up of Mikey Waco, Jay O'Neill and Davo Sanchez), there'll be a raffle and chances to win tickets to see Guttermouth at Hell's Kitchen next Friday. You really couldn't want anything more than cheap beer and/or strong cocktails, and, well, they've got all of that at the Kitchen too. Choose wisely with your musical time and dollars Friday, but it's impossible to go wrong with this show. - Matt Driscoll

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Billy Shew Band. 8 pm. $5.

Little Creek Casino Shelton. Randy Linder & The Classix. 9 pm. NC.

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Barley Wine Revue. All Ages. 6 pm. NC.

Maxwell's Speakeasy Tacoma. Lance Buller Trio. All Ages. 7-10 pm. NC.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Quevelo, Hella Sunshine, Killer Kanary. 9 pm.

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Beep, Ben Kamen, Heatwarmer. All Ages. 9 pm. $5.

  • Young Seattle band Heatwarmer have an interesting vibe and clearly, there's a lot of talent going around between its four members, who gig from time to time at Seattle's jazz and progressive-friendly college-area bars. There's a "School of Music" approach evident in their sound, but also a real adult contemporary schmaltziness that feels more accidental than ironic (which is how it should be). Some of their songs take crazy, daring left turns, following strange and twisty paths in a figurative, ramshackle vessel cobbled together from the scraps of numerous musical varietals (jazz, folk, rock, country, world, etc.). File them under "potpourri" maybe, but whatever you do, don't shrug off their super-heated sound just because they've got a dorky song called "We've Got the Beat" (ugh). - Jason Baxter

The Peabody Waldorf Boutique and Gallery Tacoma - Downtown. Grand Hallway, Goldfinch, Birds & Batteries, Kimo Muraki. All Ages. 8 pm.

Tacoma Community College Auditorium Tacoma - Westside. Ryan Shea Smith, performing with Thomas Marriott, Jeff Johnson, Eric Eagle, Michael Eads, Roger Wood, James Smith, Stephanie Porter. All Ages. 7:30 pm. TCC students NC/$10 all others.

  • The Weekly Volcano likes to say, "Everything is jazz," but, in truth, we don't really believe it. Only SOME things are actually jazz, and the way Ryan Shea Smith tickles the ivories definitely qualifies. The highly regarded Seattle native will visit Tacoma Community College Friday and drop a concert sure to be ripe with excitement and spontaneity - two of Smith's many musical qualities. Others include smarts, soul and - yes - jazziness. Smith's show at TCC also features the Marriot Brothers and Stephanie Porter. — Michael Swan

Traditions Cafe and World Folk Art Olympia - Downtown. Gaelica. All Ages. 8 pm. $8-$12.

Uncle Sam's American Bar & Grill Spanaway. Left 4 Dead, Last Man Standing, Koz Of Konfusion. 9 pm.

Varsity Grill Tacoma - Downtown. TacSea! TacSea!: Phan/Harm/Sok Family Fundraiser, with Black Soul, Brooklyn Pool, Xylophones, Pocket Panda, TraQ, The Cool Vibes, DJ J-Fresh, DJ Kuhnex. 9 pm. $10.

  • The excitedly named "TacSea! TacSea!: A Celebration of Music, Art and Life" event at Varsity Grill in Tacoma has a lot of promise to it. Not only does the inclusion of exclamation marks usually indicate good times, but musical guests like Brooklyn Pool and Xylophones only add to the urgency. Pre-show hype promises "an eclectic dance party and art showcase like no other." See if that's a good thing Friday. — MS
