Night Moves: Hunter Lea, The Art of Shooting, Tommy Castro Band, Mahnhammer and others ...

Excuse Me Flo will rock The Charleston tonight.

TONIGHT'S LIVE WIRES >>>

4th Ave Ale House Olympia - Downtown. Moonshine, Drums & Color. 21+. 9 pm.

Cedarwood Dome Milton. SweetKiss Momma, Tori Sparks, Alicia Healey, Ten Miles Of Bad Road, The Twang Junkies. 21+. 8 pm.

The Charleston Bremerton. Excuse Me Flo, Annamercury, Wahnder Lust. All Ages. 7 pm.

The Den at urbanXchange Tacoma - Downtown. Hunter Lea, Kelli's Starlight wishes, Michael Ghee. Hunter Lea is the former Mono in VCF. All Ages. 7 pm. $5.

  • Hunter Lea started out with music startlingly different than the somber, dramatic music Mono in VCF produced. Raised by a father who secretly (to the dismay of his mother) began submerging himself in the '60s garage rock scene in Auburn, Lea soon found himself drawn to the rebellious rock 'n' roll that his father valued. Read my full story here.Rev. Adam McKinney

El Sarape Shelton. High Ceiling. 21+. 9:30 pm. NC.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Demented Souls, Ninthgate, Deathbed Confessions, In These Hands, Blood Of Rome. 21+. 9 pm. NC.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Tommy Castro Band. 21+. 8 pm. $15-$18.

SideBar Bistro Tacoma - Downtown. Saxophonist Michael Hershman. All Ages. 6-9 pm. NC.

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Technicolor Yawn, The Art Of Shooting, Eux Autres, Brotherhood Of The Black Squirrel. 21+. 9 pm.

  • Do you ever get the sensation a band is manipulating you? Do you ever care? The Art of Shooting is an abundantly melodramatic band from Brooklyn; they want very badly for me to feel something when I listen to them. And I do. When those sweeping guitars come in at just the right moment, when lead singer Kelly Irene Corson's vocals layer one on top of the other in a cavalcade of emotion or when her voice meekly mutters "Isn't that your cue to go?" - all of this works on me. At the end of one of the Art of Shooting's giant-sounding songs, I feel wrung out and used, and I like it. To be manipulated - by a band so capable - can be great. - Rev. AM

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Sevens Revenge. All Ages. 8:30 pm. NC.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Mahnhammer, Helms Alee, Hazzards Cure, Dogshredder. 21+. 9 pm.

Vanity Nightclub (56th and S. Tacoma Way) Tacoma. Grand Opening Party, with Just Dirt. 21+. 9 pm.

Night Moves: The Spittin' Cobras, A Leaf, Shenandoah Davis and others ...

Twig Palace plays tonight at Northern in Olympia.

SEE IT LIVE TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

4th Ave Ale House Olympia - Downtown. Offshore Radio, Wauntid, Under Sin. 21+. 9 pm.

The Charleston Bremerton. Moonshine, Drums & Color, A Leaf. All Ages. 7 pm.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. The Spittin' Cobras, Flexx Bronco, Atomic Outlaws, Basic Radio. 21+. 8 pm. $3.

  • When you Google "spitting cobras" what you come up with is a definition similar to this one, taken from Wikipedia: "A spitting cobra is one of several species of cobras that have the ability to eject venom from their fangs when defending themselves against predators. The sprayed venom is harmless to intact skin. However, it can cause permanent blindness if introduced to the eye and left untreated (causing chemosis and corneal swelling)." However, drop the "g", and search Spittin' Cobras, and what you stumble upon is something exponentially more rocking, and perhaps equally as deadly (in a good way). Made up of members from iconic punk bands like KMFDM, The Dwarves and Murdock, this is a show Tacoma should snort up like free coke, or at the very least come out in force for. – Bobble Tiki

Hi-Fidelity Lounge Bremerton. The Ray Ohls Jazz Trio. New York style jazz. 21+. 8:30 pm. $4.

Johnnys at Fife Fife. Buckshot Jazz. 21+. 7:30pm -10:30pm. NC.

Night Moves: Nashville Pussy, New American Shame, Huntbird ...

The Petting Zu plays Jazzbones tonight.

THESE LIVE MUSIC SHOWS LOOK WORTHY >>>

Dawson's Bar and Grill Tacoma - South. Blues Jam, hosted by Tim Hall. 21+. 8 pm.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Nashville Pussy, New American Shame, Civet, Fall From Grace. 21+. 8 pm. $8-$10.

  • New American Shame drummer Geoff Reading has the scoop on the show here.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Shade Of Memories, Degree Of Disorder, VX36, The Petting Zu. 21+. 8 pm.

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Hurtbird, Mosley Watta. All Ages. 8 pm.

  • Hurtbird nimbly avoids classification. In form, perhaps they most closely resemble hip-hop but, similar to Revengers, they eschew classic hip-hop instrumentation in favor of rock ‘n' roll. That's where the similarities end, though, as Hurtbird brings a mellower, more experimental edge to the table. Accompanied largely by spoken word samples and led by a vocalist who has a more conversational, less confrontational style of emceeing, Hurtbird frequently falls into a meditative, though still quite danceable, groove. In the case of a song like "I Like My Bike," they even proudly flash their Portland roots by championing the very un-hip-hop subject of city transit. It's fun, not knowing what a band will do next - an inscrutability that Hurtbird seems to have mastered. - Rev. Adam McKinney

The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. Love Child. 21+. 7 pm. NC.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Lonnie Mardis & His Quintet. 21+. 8 pm.

Uncle Sam's American Bar & Grill Spanaway. Blues Jam, hosted by Shelly Ely. 21+. 7 pm. NC.

Cedarwood Dome Milton. Sugarfixx, Wild Angels, History Of Thorns. 21+. 9 pm.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Perry Acker, The B.G.P., Christopher Day. 21+. 8 pm. $7.

Le Voyeur Olympia - Downtown. Elbow Coulee, Pocket Panda, Razors and Red Flags. 10 pm, NC.

  • The music of Elbow Coulee is inarguably influenced by the kind of power pop that ran so rampant in the mid- to late-1990s, but it is delivered in a deceptively prickly package. In every song there is a huge chorus, delivered in that particularly bratty, California punk style by lead singer Andrew Tuller. Keeping the songs from dissolving into mainstream radio pap are jagged edges that hug every power chord and triumphant tempo change. It's an effective way of transporting those classic pop sounds into the murkier territory of today's music. There's a kind of restless ambition at work in many of the songs, resulting in delightfully unexpected turns, like the piano that comes twinkling along in "Strangers for Now" to accompany Elbow Coulee's surprisingly sweet harmonies. - Rev. Adam McKinney

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Sonic Shakedown Garage Rock Fest, featuring The Plastards, The I Love Myselfs, The Coloffs, The Dignitaries, Apache Chief. Proceeds benefit the American Diabetes Association. 21+. 7 pm. $5.

  • Over the years, garage rock has become a staple in the Tacoma music scene, which is partially the result of having a lineage that dates back to the Sonics, those almighty, amp-stabbing garage grandfathers. Talking about "Tacoma grit," the music that pops into one's head is the likely the  dirty, ear-splitting kind that will be on display at Sonic Shakedown. Assembled by local garage rock act the Dignitaries, the bill is made up of almost half a dozen local mainstays, including the Coloffs, the Plastards, the I Love Myselfs, Apache Chief and the Dignitaries themselves. The lineup is eclectic within the boundaries of garage rock, showcasing the punkier and poppier extremes of the genre: the I Love Myselfs' more classic rock leanings will play in opposition to Apache Chief's rabid squall, for instance. Sweetening the deal even further are Sonic Shakedown's admirable intentions. Proceeds of the event will go to the America Diabetes Association. - Rev. AM

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Tara Jane Oneil, Sedan and Helll. All Ages. 9 pm. $6.

Rhythm & Brews Tacoma - Downtown. The Cody Rentas Band. 8:30 pm.

The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. Jakob Singer. 21+. 8:00 pm. The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. Jakob Singer. 21+. 8:00 pm.

Maxwell's Speakeasy Tacoma - Downtown. Lance Buller Trio. All Ages. 7-10 pm. NC.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Makeup Monsters. 21+. 9 pm.

  • T-Town's Shayne Weeks and Isaac Solverson, both with Tacoma School of the Arts ties (shocking development!) - collective co-creators of Makeup Monsters - have felt the highs only the age of instantaneous internet hype can create, and undoubtedly have the talent to justify it. Though it might be tempting to lump these kids in with the flavor-of-the-month-past chillwave genre, Makeup Monsters have more going for them than momentary excitement. Though the band started as a two-piece, Bobble Tiki understands that earlier this year a full-time drummer was added to the mix - raising the band tally to three and allowing for even more creation. – Bobble Tiki

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Salesman, Abusic, Dallen Graff & Outnumbered. All Ages. 7:30 pm. $6.

Night Moves: Afrobeat, experimental, The Missionary Position ...

Revolt Revolt plays Hell's Kitchen tonight.

WE RECOMMEND THESE LIVE SHOWS TONIGHT >>>

Eastside Club Olympia - Downtown. Chicago Afrobeat Project. 21+. 9 pm.

  • While afrobeat has experienced a hip resurgence of late, this is a group that's been doing it since before it was cool (or as cool as it is today), and one that takes an original approach. As the name implies, Chicago Afrobeat Project has always had the goal of, "breathing the intensity of Chicago's rich music scene into the infectious sounds of afrobeat." Infectious. That word is used a lot in relation to this band. Judge for yourself Thursday at the Eastside. – Michael Swan

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. The Missionary Position, Big Wheel Stunt Show, Revolt Revolt. 21+. 9 pm. $3.

  • "We're making up some new ground with the Missionary Position," says singer/guitarist Jeff Angell. "We got a couple offers from a couple labels. I'm not sure if that's what we want to do. The Independent Film Channel licensed some of our songs to use for their promos. We did 154 shows last year and sold out of our first pressing of our record and now we're on our second pressing. ... We're staying pretty busy." With the Missionary Position getting some early recognition, Angell says that he needs to be wary of how to proceed with dealing with the music business. Read my full story here. — Rev. Adam McKinney

Hi-Fidelity Lounge Bremerton. The Ray Ohls Jazz Trio. New York style jazz. 21+. 8:30 pm. $4.

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Marty Barrett, Heaths, Total Life. All Ages. 8 pm.

  • Total Life is the solo project of Kevin Doria from esteemed experimental Olympia expats Growing. Like most drone music, Total Life can be as punishing as it is proficiently-crafted, and so subtle that the many shifts and eddies which unfold amidst Doria's white noise squall sometimes barely register, sticking to the margins of the listener's perception. On the extremely-rare 2005 Total Life debut, Doria's feedback-overloaded guitar occasionally contorts into something resembling a typical solo or melody, bubbling up through layers of phlegmy whorls to reach the sonic foreground. It's a little like Growing's earlier material, only morphed by mountainous heaps of distortion. Fans of both Kevin Shields (the seminal shoegaze musician who found nirvana in eardrum-immolating guitar) and Kevin Shields (the intense noise band), take note. - Jason Baxter

O'Callahan's Pub & Grill Key Peninsula. Tim Hall Band. 21+. 7 pm. NC.

Rock the Dock Pub & Grill Tacoma - Downtown. Acoustic Open Mic/Musicians Night. Hosted by Big D from 9 Pound Hammer. 21+. 9 pm.

Sax Restaurant and Lounge Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Singer-songwriter Randall Jex. 21+. 9 pm. NC.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Billy Stoops Acoustic Jam. 21+. 9 pm. NC.

Tempest Lounge Tacoma - Upper Tacoma. Come Out And Play Open Mic. Hosted by Kim Archer and Nick Sandy. All Ages. 7-10 pm. NC.

Night Moves: Sundays are the new Saturdays

The Throw Away Sons play The Matrix Coffee House tonight.

WE RECOMMEND THESE LIVE SOUTH SOUND SHOWS TONIGHT >>>

Art House Designs Olympia - Eastside. Pearl Django, featuring Vince Brown. All Ages. 6 pm. $12-$15.

Dawson's Bar and Grill Tacoma - South. Blues Jam, hosted by Tim Hall. 21+. 8 pm.

Java Fusion Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Open Mic Night, hosted by Billy Farmer. All Ages. 4 pm. NC.

  • Read our Q&A with Billy Farmer here.

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. The Makedonians. All Ages. 1 pm. NC.

  • We reviewed one of their last shows at the Mandolin Cafe here.

Matrix Coffee House Centralia. Kevin's Birthday Show, with Mad Dog & The Smokin' Js, The Hub City Hillbillys, Throw Away Sons. All Ages. 8:30 pm. $6.

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Little Wings, Breathe Owl Breathe. All Ages. 8 pm.

  • Breathe Owl Breathe are a disarmingly earnest group of artists and musicians who make ground-level folk-pop. Their current aspiration is to make a children's record about an ostrich and a mole that become friends while hanging out underground. So, you know, they're that kind of band. Their music is intimate, gentle stuff that never loses sight of drive and pop structure in favor of preciousness, much to the delight of my admittedly folk-weary ears. Little electronic flourishes have a way of seeping in ever so slightly around the edges, adding just that little touch of texture that helps to break up the lazy, drifting vibe of Breathe Owl Breathe. Oh, and about that children's record: if you donate enough to get the record started, BOB will play your slumber party. Neat-o. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Pantages Theater Tacoma - Downtown. Jo Dee Messina. 7:30 pm. $34-$64.

  • Born in Massachusetts, Jo Dee Messina was influenced by the music of Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Reba McEntire. Inspired, at 19 years of age she loaded a car and headed to Nashville and has never looked back. Messina - who has sold more than five million albums - is the first female country artist to score three multiple week number one songs from the same album.  She has had nine number one single hits, including "My Give A Damn's Busted," "Alright," and "Bring on the Rain." Her appearance in Tacoma is part of her cross-country "Music Room Series Tour." During her appearance at the Pantages, Messina will take audience requests, talk about the song writing process and answer questions. – J.M. Simpson

Seven Cedars Casino Sequim. Junkyard Jane. 21+. 5:30 pm. NC.

Top of Tacoma Bar & Cafe Tacoma - Third Anniversary Show featuring Eastside. Matinee, Pioneers West, Wheelies. 5 pm. NC.

Traditions Cafe and World Folk Art Olympia - Downtown. Professor Banjo CD Release Show, featuring Paul Silveria. All Ages. 6 pm. $5-$15.

Uncle Sam's American Bar & Grill Spanaway. Sunday Blues Jam Night. Hosted by Shelly Ely. 21+. 7-10 pm.

Night Moves: Rize Of The Dead, Hammy's Birthday Party, Mr. Fusion and Stillwater!

Stillwater plays an all-ages 6 p.m. show at Mandolin Cafe tonight.

SOUTH SOUND COMES ALIVE >>>

4th Ave Ale House Olympia - Downtown. Offshore Radio, Congratulations, Mercurial. 21+. 9 pm.

Bethany Open Bible Church Tacoma - Eastside. SAMFEST 2010. Sam Stevens passed away due to an accident involving a drunk driver. Bands will rock in his memory. All Ages. 5-10 pm. $10.

Bob's Java Jive Tacoma - Central. Toward The Flame, Education. 21+. 8 pm.

Cedarwood Dome Milton. 10th Annuel Rize Of The Dead, with Unhailoed, A Lesson In Chaos, Church Of Hate, The Curse Of Western Culture, Demented Souls, Murmur. 21+. 7 pm. $10.

Cork! A Wine Bar Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Mr. Fusion, featuring Joe Izenman & Erich Sachs. 21+. 8:30 pm.

The Den @ urbanXchange Tacoma - Downtown. Eleanor Murray, Little Horses. All ages. 7 pm.

  • For music fans that obsess over production and arrangement, the brand of stripped-down, no-frills folk that's ubiquitous in the Pacific Northwest can, at times, become tedious and uninspiring. With those kind of bands (and the area is lousy with them), there is little to scrutinize or pick apart aside from the lilts and wavers of a singer's voice, or the lyrical content of their woodsy ditties. Fortunately, Eleanor Murray (ostensibly a five-piece band led by Ms. Murray) is not this kind of Washingtonian folkie. Across two well-received releases, Murray has capitalized on the (sometimes offbeat) contributions of her bandmates, resulting in a fuller - and fully-realized - sound. Despite the brittle, glass-like quality of her voice, and the pervasive simplicity of her compositions, Murray's songs feel hearty in a way that so much local folk doesn't. - Jason Baxter

Doyle's Public House Tacoma - Stadium District. Hammy's Birthday Party, with Manhammer, Blanco Bronco. 21+. 9:30 pm. NC.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Witchburn, From The Sea, Resdeus, Jobe Hiimself. 21+. 8 pm. NC.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Rockfish. 21+. 8 pm. $8-$10.

Harbor Greens/Forza Wine Bar Gig Harbor. Chicken Joe. 21+. 8 pm. NC.

Le Voyeur Olympia - Downtown. Lovers. 10 pm. NC.

  • There are few things more powerful (not in a sissy way, but in a gut-twisting, heart palpitation-causing kind of way) than some well-placed synthesizers and cracking handclaps. Lovers are synth peddlers and handclap manufacturers. Dark electro-pop accompanied by badass chick vocals, the songs vacillating between lovestruck declarations and eloquent fuck-yous. Of all of the mish-mashed revivals that the '00s have wrought, by far my favorite sound to see a comeback is that '80s New Wave pulse. Dancing to Lovers in you living room, you'll feel like you could finally give your heart to that certain mousy someone or other. Listening to it in a car with the windows down will give you the dangerously real sensation that you're about to do some damage to the popular kids. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Mandolin Cafe Tacoma - Central. Stillwater (bluegrass). All Ages. 6 pm. NC. Devil On A Leash. All Ages. 8:30 pm. NC.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. The Flight Of Phanuel, Lemolo. 21+. 9 pm.

  • Here's a band whose name has appeared in the Weekly Volcano countless times, on bills all over town, sharing stages with well known T-Town rock stalwarts, yet the Flight of the Phanuel has received next to no ink of its own. Well, that's just wrong, and it stops here. The band's got chops that deserve recognition. Playing The New Frontier Lounge Saturday, guitarists Jeremy Baxter and Preston Lewis, bassist Nathan Munoz and drummer Mike Pierce - collectively the Flight of the Phanuel - will put it on display,  dropping their unique brand of real life, soaring pop rock. "The Flight Of Phanuel brings to you a platform of ethereal, atmospheric soundscapes that are written from emotional responses to real events in their own lives or the lives of others," says the band bio. But the truth is in the pudding. See for yourself. - Matt Driscoll

North Shore Golf & Country Club Tacoma - Northeast. Boogie For The Cure, featuring The T-Town Aces, Steve Bailey. 21+. 7:30 pm.

Rhythm & Brews Tacoma - Downtown. Michal Miller Band. All Ages. 9 pm.

SideBar Bistro Tacoma - Downtown. John Nichols and cellist Caleb. 7 pm. NC.

Top of Tacoma Bar & Cafe Tacoma - Eastside. Third Anniversary Party featuring CFA Disarmed (which is the acoustic-sexy version of the regular, high octane CFA), DickEd and Looking for Lizards? (Carl Zook along with Damien Simard, also rocking acoustics). 9 pm. NC.

  • Bobble Tiki has the scoop on this show.

Urban Grace Church Tacoma - Downtown. Uncle Bonsai & Christine Lavin CD Release Concert. All Ages. 7:30 pm. $17-$20.

  • Bobble Tiki has the scoop on this show.

Night Moves: Hunting Grounds, Apche Chief, Deadwood Revival, Randy Hansen, Basemint, Sugar Sugar Suger, Leo Kottke and more ...

Deadwood Revival plays Doyle's Public House tonight.

DANGER! >>>

4th Ave Ale House Olympia - Downtown. Pariah's Revolt, Severed Few, Psylem. 21+. 9 pm.

Bob's Java Jive Tacoma - Central. Oh Dear, Hunting Grounds. 21+. 8 pm.

  • Seattle four-piece Hunting Grounds are in a state of flux. Their already multifaceted sound is about to take an evolutionary leap with the departure of singer Mike Ensor, whose vocal contributions added an unmistakable New Wave vibe to the band's genre-bending indie rock songs. Now remaining members Todd Bernier (guitar, vocals), Jeremy Clemens (guitar, vocals), John Warner (drums, vocals) and new addition Jeff Smith (bass, vocals) aim to renew their focus on songwriting and recording. You'd think having four songwriters (let alone four vocalists) in one band would lead to tension - but if dialectics have taught us anything, it's that conflict begets change, and change is very much on the horizon for this gang of 30-somethings: their show at Bob's Java Jive will be their last under the name Hunting Grounds. Truly, there's no shortage of local bands drawing on the halcyon sounds of '90s alternative, but Hunting Grounds have a vibe all their own; mercurial though it may be, it's "change you can believe in." - Jason Baxter

Cedarwood Dome Milton. Smokin' Saturdays, with Shanta Louise, Red Abbey, Michael Harris, Anna Mercury. 21+. 8 pm.

The Charleston Bremerton. Apache Chief, Sea Of Misinformation, The Kleeners. All Ages. 7 pm.

Doyle's Public House Tacoma - Stadium District. Deadwood Revival. 21+. 9:30 pm. NC.

Hell's Kitchen Tacoma - Downtown. Stabwound, Oceans Of Red, Plague Ships, Deathbed Confessions, Perfect Janice. 21+. 9 pm. $5.

The Hub Tacoma - Stadium District. Fingertips. 21+. 9 pm. NC.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Randy Hansen, Dream On. 21+. 9 pm. $8-$10.

King's Books Tacoma - Stadium District. Fall Fashion Lore. Basemint will be playing live. All Ages. 8 pm. $8.

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Party Photographers. 21+. 9 pm.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Sugar Sugar Sugar. 21+. 9 pm.

Rialto Theater Tacoma - Downtown. An Evening With Leo Kottke. All Ages. 8 pm. $30-$50.

  • There are few, if any, guitarists like Leo Kottke. An acoustic fret master, tickling both the six and 12 string varieties, Kottke's blazing licks have inspired guitarists worldwide for nearly the entire length of his legendary four-decade career. With a wry, almost comical approach to life and songwriting, mixed with unfathomable skill, Kottke is one for the ages. His stop at the Rialto Saturday should follow suit. – Michael Swan

Uncle Sam's American Bar & Grill Spanaway. Corson Swift & Friends. 21+. 9 pm.
