Human Awareness Day

BOBBLE TIKI: HUG A HUMAN >>>

Rustygeorgeaware And every single day you burn through the mountain of the mundane and you sort through the chambers of chaff and the molehills of muck trying to find the momentary gems and the facile illusive glimmers of divine spectacular connection and every single day you wonder what it takes to shift your perspective away from the electronic or alter your mindset dramatically enough so as to more fully integrate your karma with your id with your sincere desire for more human contact and better appreciation of your fellow man when suddenly it hits you that the more antagonistic and more rabidly angry you get at the world for not delivering you what you so fully and righteously deserve electronically so of course the best course of karmic action is to spin around and tap your ruby heels together three times and with all sort of messy juicy wet cherry-red intention exclaim there's no place like Rusty George Creative where they demand you hide the electronics ruling your life and touch your fellow man at their Human Interaction Party Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. at their place of humans.

Guns & Rossetti in Tacoma

MATT DRISCOLL: ANTI PAY TO PLAY SHOW AT SOTA FEATURES EX END JOCK >>>

Rossetti_2

On Friday, Feb. 29 - the rarest of dates - the Tacoma School of the Arts' Club SOTA will host a free "get the word out" show for www.myspace.com/neverpaytoplay ">Stay Away from Pay to Play - an organization and cause championed by Bon Von Wheelie of Tacoma's www.myspace.com/girltrouble ">Girl Trouble. The show will feature Girl Trouble, www.myspace.com/freakouts ">the Freakouts, www.myspace.com/ttlf ">Trip the Light Fantastic, and www.myspace.com/gunsrossetti ">Guns & Rossetti - a band fronted by former 107.7 The End jock www.myspace.com/dickrossette ">Dick Rossetti (as you may have gathered from his band's name).

I spoke with Rossetti through the magic of the internet this week. Here's a taste of what the beloved personality had on his mind:

Weekly Volcano: Forgive my ignorance, but how’d we get to Guns & Rossetti? What’s the story behind you guys, and why did this all seem like a good idea? How long have you guys been at it?

Rossetti: Guns & Rossetti is basically the same line-up as the short lived Root Barrels, an experiment that broke up due to some of the Ten Commandments being broken...Gooch on guitar, Doll-Kwist on drums,  Chopper Fisher on electric bass, and me...

WV: Describe the feeling you harbor for Tacoma’s famous Girl Trouble? It’s hard not to love GT passionately, but I know you’re a married man with cats. Does this present a dilemma?

Rossetti: To paraphrase the great Chicago Bear Gale Sayers "God is First, Girl Trouble 2nd and I am third." The kitties and old lady don't really give a shit where my allegiance lies as long the cat box gets cleaned!

WV: Why did you want to be involved with the show coming up at the Tacoma School of the Arts?

Rossetti: Great cause and Zack (Varnell) the fella that runs the show over there is ace!

WV: I understand you’ve been a guest speaker at Tacoma SOTA before. How rock and roll is that?

Rossetti: How much rock and roll could that be? There's probably not a 23 year old in the south end that is hipper than the 14 & 15 years olds that I spoke to, they know it all!!  :), and their haircuts are brilliant!

WV: The show will support Bon and GT’s anti pay to play campaign. Why is it an important cause? Should some bands be forced to pay to play?

Rossetti: Bon is a very spirited and passionate woman about what she views as the ills of society.  Pay to Play being one of them, we support her efforts, tenfold. Listen, musicians are some of the more fucked over clientele of life, to make you PAY to play your music is just another example of unfair, extreme bending over  to kill ones creative spirit...

WV: For those who miss your radio antics, what’s the scoop with Dick Rossetti these days? What’s currently making you happy? What’s chapping your hide, so to speak?

Rossetti: I miss working with Harms and Jim Keller. Without sounding like sour grapes - I can't believe they're (Entercom) letting that 'clown' (Lazlo) sink the station. With that said, the statement may be a disservice to actual clowns, who are regarded as funny and somewhat entertaining...

WV: If you had to describe Tacoma in three words, what would they be?

Rossetti: Frisko Freeze, Honey!

WV: What can people expect from Guns and Rossetti in the future?  Records? Tours? Orgies? Drug addictions? Farm Aid? IPod commercials? Car crashes and one armed drummers?

Rossetti: We’ve got a CD forthcoming called SPINS, the first single will be
'Douchebag Boyfriend' - produced by Conrad Uno and perhaps one single t-shirt...    Some concert performances here and there.

WV: What does rock and roll need more of these days?

Rossetti:  It needs less shitty everything and more UFO, Sonics, Upper Crust and Stud Cole! I'm serious...

Northwest plays take center stage

STEVE DUNKELBERGER: TOO MANY PLAYS, SO LITTLE TIME >>>

The first night of the Festival of Northwest Plays is over. You missed it. Get over it and move on. There are other nights to attend, so you can redeem yourself in the eyes of your cultural soul then.

You missed Geography Club, the premiere staging of a theatrical version of Tacoma author Brent Hartinger's novel. The book was put on lists of banned books in some parts because it dared to cover the struggles of coming out as a gay teenager.

On tap for Friday is In the Sawtooths, an award-winning work by Boise playwright Dano Madden that covers the affects a tragedy has on a friendship. Other works will be staged through Sunday, then Thursday through Sunday next weekend as well. There will be short-shorts and full length works. Expect more theater dispatches and the festival progresses.

It's on today!

Volcanoblastart THE STAGE
Blithe Spirit
Tacoma Little Theatre has gotten ghostly with a staging of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit, a comedy about a man struggling to come to terms with the death of his wife in ways he never thought he would have to face.

British writer Charles Condomine is mourning the death of his wife and decides to invite a medium, Madame Arcati, to his home to study her as a research character for his next novel. During a post-dinner séance, Arcati found herself talking to Elvira, Charles' wife from the great hereafter. She then decides to stay in the house and attempt to rekindle her relationship with Charles. His current wife, however, takes issue with that idea. â€" Steve Dunkelberger

[Tacoma Little Theatre, through March 2, 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, $16-$20, 210 N. I St., Tacoma, 253.272.2281, www.tacomalittletheatre.com]

MORE THEATER: On local stages tonight.

BLUEGRASS
Wintergrass
Wintergrass has become one of the biggest bluegrass festivals in the country.  The four-day event features some of the best players, pickers and hammers in the world.  It offers dances. It offers kids’ activities. It offers workshops. It offers an amazing assortment of vendors with everything from guitars to fiddles to mandolins to rare recordings and even a necklace or two. It offers concerts by bluegrass giants including Seldom Scene, Punch Brothers and Bobby Osborne & The Rocky Top X-press. And, oh, boy, does it ever have jamming. â€" Brad Allen

[Hotel Murano, Feb. 21-24, band schedule and prices online, downtown Tacoma, 253.428.8056,
www.acousticsound.org]

WORLD BEAT
Angelique Kidjo
Incorporating Afro-funk, reggae, salsa, gospel, jazz and Zairean rumba, the Benin-born singer is not your typical world artist as she pulls from many styles to create her unique work. Sure, her grooves are Afro-based with an airplane hanger full of percussion, but her delivery is pop-friendly. Her self-produced debut, Pretty, arrived on shelves in 1988 to little or no notice from the mainstream. Throughout her 20 year career Kidjo has continually pushed herself to keep it fresh. Her 1998 outing went as far to integrate hip-hop and Afro-Celtic into the mix. â€" Tony Engelhart

[Washington Center, 7:30 p.m., $17.75-$35.50, 512 Washington St. S.E., Olympia, 360.753.8586]

BLUES
Tab Benoit
Mixing New Orleans funk, soul and swamp blues with East Texas guitar, Tab Benoit carved out his own sound in the late ‘80s. The guitarist’s gutsy licks and fiery solos are as smooth as butter, and he effortlessly slides up and down the fret board while his road tested vocals have a Cajun twang. â€" TE

Wintergrass review: Day One

STEPH DEROSA: SO. MUCH. FUN >>>

Wintergrassebonyhillibill A lot has changed since last year’s Wintergrass Festival: The bathrooms are no longer pink, there is glass art all over the damn place, and the carpet doesn’t make me nauseous anymore.  With these Hotel Murano factors present, my first night of bluegrass, banjos, and southern hippies couldn’t go wrong.

Typically there are bands and musicians set out in various areas of the hotel, and one must plan out what they’re going to see, or simply accidentally stumble upon it.  Fortunately for me, last night had only one stage open, and one line-up of artists.  The Weekly Volcano hooked me up with a stunning red “Press Pass,” and I was good to go.  I asked the innocent volunteer who handed me my pass what my limitations were as “press” and they gave me the answer I’ve always wanted to hear: No limitations.

Hell. Yeah.

Wintergrass_sarah4 Wintergrass_sarahandaoife2 Eventually 5:30 p.m. struck, and I was stoked.  Sarah Jarosz took the stage and while she was at it she took my breath away as well.  As I listened and felt my soul sway to her voice, I tried to think of the appropriate vocabulary to describe it.  What first came to mind was “soulful innocence.”  Then I realized how difficult it was to describe how she sounded when actually it was how she made you feel.  This became the standard for the rest of the night.  You didn’t hear the music, you felt it.

The intimacy of the venue, and the wholesomeness of each performer set the night’s tone as an amazing one.  Aoife O’Donovan from Crooked Still joined Sarah as they did a particularly remarkable version of Tom Waite’s “Come On Up To The House.”

Honestly, I nearly cried.

Wintergrass_markandemory4 Mark Johnson and Emory Lester were up next.  From that set it was Emory’s mandolin solo that I adored.

Wintergrass_russbarenberg Wintergrass_russbarenberg4 I caught up with Russ Barenberg backstage before he started his set.

Wintergrass_wineandtopramen By this time I had made friends with the backstage staff, and they began to find humor in my incessant picture snapping.  One of them even jumped up on me and scared me as I focused on a drum set.  To them I say: Very funny ladies, very funny.  While I was back there I scoped out the “Hospitality Green Room” to see what sort of special treatment Hotel Murano hooked these folks up with.  Lemmie tell ya, it’s nothing but premium grocery for our Wintergrass artists: Fine wine and Top Ramen.

The legendary Laura Love stole the hearts of everyone in the room, and it was at this point the party really started to happen.  With Laura included, along with the next two artists, the trio of bands were appropriately named: Black and Bluegrass.  That’s right, black musicians playing bluegrass.  I damn near had a heat stroke as my blood flow was drastically increased for the next three and a half hours.

Wintergrass_ebonyhillibillies After Laura Love, the Ebony Hillbillies made love to us with old school, down home dancin’ music.  People were up and out of their seats.  From corner to corner you could see waltzes, jitterbugs, and maybe even a little running man if you looked real hard.  These guys came straight from playing in the New York subways to our delicate green city.  One of the songs they so eloquently described as “ a song written by a French soldier walking backward.”  They were incredibly brilliant, and incredibly adorable.

Closing the night out with the biggest “bang” I’ve ever encountered in a Hotel Murano (insert sexual innuendo here) was Ruthie Foster.  Words cannot even begin to describe how powerful her spirit shines through in her music.  I grabbed a beer, sat back, and put my mind into the groove.  It was the last show of the night and I was done chasing the story for you guys.  That’s right, I said, “Screw the Spew!” and let myself loose.

Song, after song, after song Ruthie pulled at my heartstrings.  Laura Love joined her on stage and tore it up.  I’ve never seen a girl move the way she did, and boy oh boy, she worked that crowd up into a serious frenzy.

Wintergrass_ruthiefoster_2 Wintergrass_ruthiefoster6 Wintergrass_ruthiefoster12 For an encore Ruthie belted out an amazingly gorgeous version of “Oh Suzanna.”  I know, hard to believe, right?  You have to hear it for yourself.  This time I didn’t almost cry, I did cry.  I shimmied my way right up into the front row, and watched her face as she held back her own tears.  She was so lost in the music that she actually forgot the words.  That moment is etched in my memory, and I will never forget.

Who’s with me tomorrow night?

Breakfast With Bobble Tiki

BOBBLE TIKI: REPLETION, STARBUCKS, TAB BENOIT >>>

THE DAILY WORD
Repletion \rih-PLEE-shun\, noun:

1. The condition of being completely filled or supplied.
2. Excessive fullness, as from overeating.

USAGE EXAMPLE: Somewhere in between the grande nachos and mozzarella cheese sticks Bobble Tiki reached repletion, but that didn’t stop him. A few chicken strips, a couple handfuls of kettle chips, and three beers later, Bobble Tiki wished it would have.

Third Thursday photographs

RON SWARNER: THIRD THURSDAY ART WALK >>>

Maybe it was the influx of new galleries, or Steve Craig’s vigil, or the Festival of Northwest Plays, or the weather, whatever it was Tacoma turned out for Third Thursday Art Walk last night.  Here are a few shots I snapped last night at the packed Fulcrum Gallery where Steven Naccarato's art hung, the well-attended vigil in front of Steve Craig’s Rampart gallery and the lively Parfait Amour fashion show at The Monsoon Room. The progressive, impressive fashions were designed by Chelsia Berry, Zoe Vanessa Johnson and Lisa Kinoshita of Mineral.

Stay Away from Pay to Play

MATT DRISCOLL: THINKS GIRL TROUBLE IS THE COOLEST >>>

Yesterday I posted an interview with www.myspace.com/dickrossette ">Dick Rossetti, former 107.7 the End personality and frontman of www.myspace.com/gunsrossetti ">Guns & Rossetti, a top notch garage band that will play Club SOTA in Tacoma on Friday, Feb. 29. Tacoma’s Girl Trouble will headline the show, and the entire evening is designed to get the word out about GT drummer Bon Von Wheelie’s “Stay Away from Pay to Play” campaign. Along with Girl Trouble and Guns & Rossetti, www.myspace.com/freakouts ">the Freakouts and www.myspace.com/ttlf ">Trip the Light Fantasticwww.myspace.com/ttlf "> are also on the bill.Girl_trouble_4

Today I spoke with Von Wheelie, once again through the magic of the internet, about how her efforts to thwart pay to play scams in the area have been going, and what the hell Girl Trouble has been up to.

Enjoy.

Weekly Volcano: Can you give people an update on your anti pay-to-play campaign? Are you making headway? What scams are currently taking advantage of people?

Von Wheelie: Well, since I started this campaign over a year ago, it’s been really interesting. After 6 months or so I ended up getting kicked off Myspace. When they delete you, you are just finished, everything is gone. They don’t tell you why, and when you write them asking to give you the reason, they don’t reply. Hey, they are Myspace. They don’t have to give you a reason! So that was a little upsetting.

I thought about giving up but it only took about an hour of soul searching to decide I wasn’t going to stop. I still thought an anti pay-to-play site was needed and useful. So I started the new site, "Stay Away from Pay To Play" which is still going. The main changes I made are to keep the real specific hard-hitting facts/gripes on the Girl Trouble website. The Stay Away from Pay to Play site has been up and running for about 8 months with no problems. We’ve got over a thousand friends in the US and Europe too. Apparently paying to play is a problem worldwide.

Originally my biggest gripe was with Big Time Entertainment. That’s the company that rents the club for a crappy night, spam emails new bands to "play" shows, gives them tickets to sell and takes the biggest share for themselves. I’m happy to say that Big Time sort of fizzled out here in Tacoma. They do a few shows in Seattle, mostly at the Pay-to-play Mecca, Studio 7. I like to think I was helpful in hipping new bands to the scam of paying to play but it’s hard to say. A company like Big Time can probably only last so long continuously in one location. Eventually they saturate their market.

(Von Wheelie continued)

Besides Big Time going national, there are tons of other (pay to play schemes) operating. They mostly fall into two categories:

- The Battle of the Bands (sell tickets, give all money to the promoter for a chance to go to other rounds to sell more tickets and give more money to the promoter for a chance to "win" recording contracts, playing at big Euro Fests, fame/fortune). It’s a pay-to-play pyramid scheme since all the bands on the bottom are propping up the winner. These include Emergenza (the Euro fest that has come to the US in the last several years), Bodog (run by a gaming tycoon who can’t enter the US for tax evasion), Gorilla (cheapest BOTB, you win $500 and 20 hours of "studio time" - from Cincinnati OH), and www.myspace.com/jamsolidtucson ">Jam Solid (a band is taking them to court on Judge Mathis in the spring!). Just check out the Studio 7 website. They host them all. Gorilla is the worst right now. They’ve contacted Girl Trouble (wow, we’d just love to win that $500!) about four different times.

- The CD compilation. A company contacts the band and tells them they can be on their cool comp for $600. The band will get 50 copies to sell and they will be sent to record execs. They usually feature about 20 bands (I’ll let you do the math) and the only copies made are the ones sent to the bands. Illumina Records "Rockers for Life" is the worst. They claim they are benefiting a drunk driving campaign but there’s evidence to the contrary.

WV: Did you ever imagine there would come a time when Girl Trouble was influencing and mentoring so many young musicians in Tacoma? Is it gratifying?

Von Wheelie: I think there have been times when we’ve influenced people we knew, but we never thought about influencing the younger bands. I guess after being in a band 24 years (our anniversary is coming up, March 9th) people will listen to us a little bit. And of course, when we talk about stuff like paying-to-play, we have only the best interest of these young bands in mind. I think they appreciate that. Nobody wants to be scammed. And I have to admit that this new generation doesn’t seem to do that "you’re too old and out of touch" routine. They treat us like one of them, and we feel that way too. We’re all in this together, no matter how long we’ve been plugging away at it, a couple months, a couple years, a couple decades... we all face the same challenges.

It’s great for us to see so many good bands coming out of Tacoma and all of the Northwest. We felt there was a little bit of a dry period for awhile. I mean there were some good bands but not this many! It seems like there are tons of young bands now and they are all really good and all really great people to know. They’ll go their own way and make mistakes like we did, but we want them to have a clean start without getting exploited by pay-to-play companies.

WV: How about a Girl Trouble update? What have you guys been working on and what can people expect from you in ’08?

Von Wheelie: Well, we better get an album out here or nobody will remember who the hell we are. We’ve got about half an album all done. We’ve probably got songs enough for the rest, but it’s been hard to find the time... and why you might ask?

Our own K. P. Kendall and our other nephew Isaac Olsen have been making a full-length independent movie called Quiet Shoes. It’s taken over a year, everything has been filmed and they are working on the audio/soundtrack. KP and Isaac have been entering the Grand Cinema 72 Hour Film Competition for several years with good success. They decided to "go big" with this full-length feature and have commandeered everybody they know to be part of it. GT bass player Dale Phillips is the star and they’ve pretty much beat the crap out of him for the sake of the film. He’s a trooper. Our guitarist Kahuna also figures prominently with a big part and also built most of the special props that were needed. I’ve been in charge of special graphics when they are needed, usually in a moment’s notice. Movies take up a lot of time, but this is a project we’ve all enjoyed working on. When we have a big premier we will be sure to let you know.

Once the movie is done and the album comes out, we might even hit the road again. After 24 years, we never count anything out.
