Satellite Coffee throws a party

SUZY STUMP: SATELLITE COFFEE GRAND OPENING >>>

We've all been in line at the café and bemoaned the person ahead of us, who sounds more like a code-speaking spy than a coffee consumer. Perhaps a few of us will even admit to our own momentary lapses of reason, which led us to pronounce such Orwellian words ourselves. Even I will confess to (in my younger days, mind you) spouting such nonsense as "doubletallnonfatvanillalatte." But, if you think about it, annoying as the latte lingo may be, it does sound better than saying, "I'd like two espressos â€" one caffeinated, one decaffeinated â€" poured into an extra-large cup filled with steamed nonfat milk â€" hold the foam â€" made into a hot chocolate, and mixed with vanilla and caramel syrup. And please top that with a dollop of whipped cream."

The brain trust behind Satellite Coffee will chat you up for hours on the science behind making the perfect cup of coffee.  I can’t follow their code-speak.  They are smart. And they know their beans.

If you have yet to visit this tiny, elevated coffee house that opened November 2007 drop by Friday, March 21, during its grand opening party held below at its neighbor Supernova Hair and Tattoo. I guarantee you’ll learn a thing or two, drink delicious Stumptown Coffee and hear live music from Eddie Spaghetti and Rontrose Heathman (Satellite co-owner) of The Supersuckers, and Bob Wayne & The Outlaw Carnies.

We’ll chat this up as the night approaches, in a language you can under stand.

Punching up the future

MATT DRISCOLL: AN EXTRA PREDICTION FOR YOUR PLEASURE >>>

The Tacoma South End Neighborhood Council will meet Wednesday, March 19, at Fire Station No. 8 for one of their (at least) four yearly get-togethers. According to the South End Neighborhood Council’s Web site, “The SENCo (South End Neighborhood Council) seeks to encourage the participation of all citizens in the governmental process and to maximize their use of resources through the concepts of self-help, group organization and utilization of available services and funding sources.”

My prediction of what will happen at the meeting didn't make our Punching up the Future feature in tomorrow's print version of the Weekly Volcano.  Here's what I think will happen anyway:

A handful of South End citizens will find their way to Fire Station No. 8, 4911 S. Alaska St., and collectively pat themselves on the back for being such concerned citizens. After cookies and refreshments are served, attendees will chew the fat about ways to foster “economic development” and “reduce criminal activity.” Later, at least one concerned citizen will be injured haphazardly sliding down the big, shiny fireman’s pole.

Ancient Victorys and the Mutiny

Volcanoblastart OPEN MIKE
Ancient Victorys Open Mike
Ancient Victorys. What does it mean?

Here’s what you are thinking: Nerdy Dungeons and Dragons dreamscape of mythical beings: Hoof-ed creatures, Octises, and Whysps all doing battle with the roll of my many-sided die.
Here is what it really is: In the ’60s Chris Lunn, a folk blues musician, began a run of 30 years of unique, acoustic, listening Victory Music open mikes that started in Palo Alto, Calif., and moved to Court C in Tacoma in 1969. It spawned the great folk musicians of the Northwest. Great debates, and home-cooked brownies, too. Jim Page, Tim Noah, Eric Eshelman and other notable folkies emerged with crowns. Lousy musicians left with encouraged smiles. Lunn moved the musical farm league to the Antique Sandwich Company in the ’80s. Awesome sandwiches. Huge crowds. Lunn walked away when grunge hit town.

Lunn has dusted off the cobwebs and revives the open mikes under the Ancient Victorys guise. The talented ancients returned, including national acts. Comfort. Old things rule. â€" Suzy Stump

ROCK
Sugarcane Mutiny
Each time I've seen Sugarcane Mutiny they've reminded me of the Smithereens if Pat DiNizio and crew ran a dilapidated gas station with a black and white TV in the office. This Seattle quartet plays rootsy, jangly pop with an emphasis on songs as opposed to the requisite instruments and haircuts. Don't get me wrong, these cats look and sound classic, I just don't think it's their top priority.

These seasoned cats found a common thread â€" smart songwriting, stringent, catchy melodies and a dose of twang â€" on their four-song, self-titled CD that is spinning right now next to my black and white TV. â€" Brad Allen

Grade A dive bar

STEPH DEROSA: BAR EAM >>>

Barexamwestgateinn If I were a candy bar, I’d be a Snickers.  And if I were a coffee drink I’d be an Americano.  But if I were a dive bar, I’d be Westgate Inn.

Bandito Betty and I have never had as much of a good, good time as we did on Tuesday evening with Jerry and his Westgate Inn.  Two words for you: Barstool Bingo.  Yes, it’s as much fun as it sounds, and the man-oh-man does that bar get packed.  By five o’clock the neighborhood couples start rolling in.

Check out my review of the joint here.

Slurred word on the street

MATT DRISCOLL: READY FOR ANYTHING >>>

At the risk of sounding like Scott Fontaine, today I'll be heading into the downtown Austin orgy that is SXSW and looking for trouble. I'll probably smoke too many cigarettes, and get embarrassingly drunk on free booze. I'll probably meet a thousand and one bearded indie rockers, and most likely have a blast. I'll keep you posted...
