Record release bash Saturday

OWEN TAYLOR: RXEVOLUTION RECORDINGS PARTY >>>

Bacchus Back in the earthly realm after covering for Thor while he was off fighting giants, Bacchus is coming back to McCoy's with a new understanding of power. Their signature devastating hammer of sonic crunch has been honed over the last three months as they found their hands busily delivering thunder and lightning all over the northern hemisphere in offering to Odin. Having battled Loki several times in several different forms, this Northwest power trio has delivered upon the denizens of Olympia a newfound understanding of eardrum shattering force, and like the wizened demi-gods of Norse legend they have become, Bacchus wields it with unyielding fury.

This Saturday marks the second record release party for new Olympia rawk label RxEvolution Recordings. The label was started by the ferocious bass player of Bacchus, Sean McCoy and his brother Brion as a pseudo New Year's resolution to stop talking and start doing. Lining up more heavyweights than a hotdog eating contest at a strong man competition, RxEvolution has pledged to bring the signature sludge of Northwest stoner rock back to the forefront. Their first release Viva La RxEvolution lined up such Washington stalwarts as Kaskadia and Lozen with Arizona thrash monsters Hellrancho and San Diego-based Oaks, which features former Tight Bros drummer and Olympia native Justin Olsen. Their second release was a limited edition 7-inch from Mos Generator, which coincided with a European tour.

The celebration at McCoy's this weekend is in reverence for The Valley's dual release of a 10-inch and CD of their self-titled EP. With Bacchus in the wings for support, as well as 3D Witchhunt and With A Bullet, this Saturday's party will be one not to miss in Olympia for anyone who is a die hard lover of the Northwest sound.

Alkaline Trio at the South Hill Mall

MATT DRISCOLL: FRONT SIDE HEEL GRAB >>>

In one of the more bizarre announcements I’ve received lately, yesterday I learned that Alkaline Trio will be playing the South Hill Mall in Puyallup this Saturday. The band is part of the Zumiez Couch Tour 2008. Apparently, this is the 8th annual Zumiez Couch Tour, and the stop in Puyallup will kick things off. The South Hill Mall will be the first of 12 scheduled dates around the Northwest.

Along with Alkaline Trio, the Zumiez Couch Tour will also feature a skating competition known as the Best Foot Forward Am contest. According to Zumiez, the competition “aims to help up-and-coming skaters ‘take one giant leap for Am kind.’” More importantly, “Zumiez Best Foot Forward is a jam format Am contest. Each contest will begin with an open qualifier, where the first 20 skaters to register will compete for one of 3 spots in the invitational contest later that day. The winner of each local BFF invitational will then be flown to compete in the Zumiez Best Foot Forward Finals in Maplewood, MN at the final stop of the tour.”

Here’s a look at the complete schedule of events for Saturday’s Zumiez Couch Tour stop at the South Hill Mall in Puyallup â€" all of which is free.

12:00-1:00 p.m. Zumiez Best Foot Forward Local Qualifier

1:00-2:00 p.m. Zumiez Best Foot Forward Am Contest presented by Boost Mobile

2:00-3:00 p.m. Lakai Skate Team Demo

3:00-3:30 p.m. Zumiez Best Foot Forward Final Heat

3:30-5:30 p.m. Lakai Skate Team Autographs

Good conversation

Volcanoblastart_2 FUNDRIASER
Mark Lindquist/ Democratic Party
Books, beer, and politics. It’s not the sexiest of three-ways, but it’s exciting all the same â€" at least in the humble opinion of the Weekly Volcano. Thursday, Pierce County Prosecutor and popular Northwest writer Mark Lindquist will sponsor and host a rally and fund-raiser for the Democratic Party at King’s Books in Tacoma. The event, which starts at 7 p.m., will be cosponsored by U.S. Rep. Adam Smith, former County Executive and Gov. Booth Gardner, Prosecutor Gerry Horne, and Party Chair Nathe Lawver. Kegs will be on hand thanks to Pat Nagle at the Harmon, and Lindquist promises plenty of “political talk, literary talk, and lots of good local gossip.” The writer/prosecutor also plans to read from his King of Methlehem book, which was recently released in paperback by Simon & Schuster. â€" Matt Driscoll

EVENT
Olympia Farmers Market
We all know how dang cool the Tacoma Farmers Market is every Thursday in downtown Tacoma, right? But how about that Olympia Farmers Market, huh? Have you forgotten about it? I know I haven’t.

I’ve anxiously waited for the season to begin in order to collect all the fresh produce, flowers, breads, jams, and fish I could stow away in the back of my car. Live entertainment will distract the kids and provide more than a reason of shopping to take the trip down to Olympia.

The Olympia Farmers Market is open Thursdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. all the way until October. They’re not messing around when they say they’re running a farmers market. They mean business. And what a wonderfully fresh business they have. â€" Steph DeRosa

PUNK
Racist Kramer
Punk bands have a long history of choosing names designed to be inflammatory, funny and sometimes downright offensive. It just goes with the territory.

Utah’s Racist Kramer obviously realizes this. Set to hit Hell’s Kitchen tonight, along with Embrace the Kill, the Extinct and Minor Imperfection, this foursome’s moniker brings to mind a certain bizarre, n-word laced tirade by former Seinfeld star turned not-so-funny stand up comedian Michael Richards â€" interestingly enough a graduate of The Evergreen State College in Olympia.

If nothing else, Racist Kramer realizes the punk advantages to having a controversial band name. They’ve taken, presumably, the lowest point of Michael Richards’ existence, and turned it into three chord inspiration. When the world realized Kramer was a racist it ruined one of the best TV shows of all time, but it provided four guys from Utah with the perfect band name. It’s not a silver lining, but it’s something. â€" MD

Must see Olympia theater

STEVE DUNKELBERGER: THEATER THURSDAY >>>

Lips Together, Teeth Apart
This is a play about two straight couples spending a holiday weekend resting in a gay community in a house one of them inherited from her brother who died of AIDS â€" a show that demands to be shown. Through monologues unheard by the others, the characters reveal a desperate sense of individual isolation and they voice their frustrations, anger and fears. The show has a solid cast of local actors: Lauren O'Neill as Chloe, Tom Sanders as Sam, Spenser Franzen as John and Jennie Jenks as Sally.
[South Puget Sound Community College, 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, $5-$15, 2011 Mottman Road S.W., Olympia, 360.596.5501]

Reviving Ophelia
Olympia Family Theater is staging Reviving Ophelia, a play based on the best-selling adolescent psychology book by Dr. Mary Pipher that dives into deals with the  “look-obsessed, media-saturated, girl-poisoning culture” we find ourselves living in these days. The stage adaptation is designed to showcase several episodes of adolescent development in younger girls that lead to self-esteem issues and self-defeating actions, and ultimately leave the audience questioning the role of society in raising teenage girls.
[The Midnight Sun Performance Space, through June 6, 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, $8-$15, 113 Columbia St., downtown Olympia]

Rack of the day

MATT DRISCOLL: TEASE, TEASE, TEASE >>>

In the latest issue of the Weekly Volcano, which hit the streets this morning, there’s a stunningly professional journalistic gem on the subject of boobs, Tacoma Power and coffee. It’s Pulitzer stuff, no doubt about it.

That right there should be enough to intrigue you, but in case you need more, try this…

Influx of gnomes

BOBBLE TIKI: MORE WITH MR. GNOME >>>

In the most recent issue of the Weekly Volcano, Bobble Tiki interviewed Nicole Barille and Sam Meister, who collectively make up Cleveland’s Mr. Gnome. The two piece rock and roll band will play Le Voyeur in Olympia on Saturday, May 31.

Mr_gnome

If you’ve never heard of Mr. Gnome, let Bobble Tiki be the first to fill you in: these guys throw down with the best of them. Earlier this year the band released Deliver This Creature, and Bobble Tiki hasn’t been the only lover of rock to take note. Critics far and wide have been lauding Mr. Gnome.

Bobble Tiki also interviewed the Tacoma Gnome in this week’s issue of the WV - it only seemed appropriate. Unfortunately, this means Bobble Tiki only had space for a portion of the interview he did Barille and Meister. Below is the full interview. Check out the Spew tomorrow for the complete transcript of Bobble Tiki’s interview with the Tacoma Gnome.

Bobble Tiki: Let's start by talking about Deliver This Creature. Has it been fulfilling to get a debut full-length out on the street? How has the reaction been so far?

Meister: This album really came out of nowhere for us.  When we threw our stuff into storage last summer and hit the road, we weren't really sure where we were going or what we were trying to accomplish.   We ended up having a few weeks off between tours and got introduced to both Wavelab and Jackpot Studios and decided it was the right time and place to attempt a full-length album.  We jumped in there with a limited budget and very limited time, crossed our fingers and hoped for the best.
Barille: Yeah, we feel really fortunate to have had the chance to work at WaveLab, Jackpot and Smart Studios (which is where the album was mixed).  We pretty much spent our life savings on this record and it's a culmination of our time on the road last year. The reaction has been overwhelming positive and we're quite flattered by all of the positive press.

BT: What's the writing and recording process like for you guys? Is there a formula or do you guys tend to wing it?

Meister: The writing and recording process are 2 completely different beasts.  Our writing process isn't very formulaic. We seem to write music in all different fashions.  Sometimes Nicole will already have pieces and bring them to me, sometimes we'll get something off of jamming, and sometimes a little song bird sings beautiful melodies into my ear.  Then I kill him...but I don't eat him, Nicole does.
Barille: I didn't want to eat him...we're poor and I was sick of Ramen noodles...

BT: Why does Mr. Gnome work? What are the benefits of a two person band? Any negatives?

Meister:  Mr. Gnome works for us because we're both crazy.  We cry a lot and Nicole cuts herself.
Barille: We're definitely both crazy but who isn't nowadays?  I think the reason we never added any other members to the band was because the writing process came so naturally for us.  We can tell each other what we like and don't like without worrying about hurting each other's feelings.  Sam cries a lot.  I know he says we both do but he's definitely the sensitive one.  I think the only negative of being a two-piece is the fear of repeating ourselves because of limited instrumentation. Our goal is to constantly evolve but that's not something you can force. It’s gotta come naturally.

Mr_gnome1

BT: You're in the midst of a tour. How do you guys travel? Sleeping on floors and long hours in a dirty van, or are you guys more high class than that?

Meister:  I guess we're your standard dirty rock band.  Traveling in a minivan, sleeping wherever we can.  You gotta love it, or it'll eat you alive.
Barille:  Oh man...our van is so gross right now.  It smells like garbage, feet, cigarettes, and poop.  There's nothing high class about our traveling arrangements.

BT: Why Mr. Gnome?

Meister: Acid + picking your future band name = Mr. Gnome.  Garden gnomes on LSD can be very beautiful, provocative creatures.  So playful.  So soft. But don't squeeze them too hard, they can't breathe when you do that.

BT: There's a solid amount of Mr. Gnome buzz at the moment. Do you guys pay attention to any of it?

Meister:  We try not to, but sometimes it's unavoidable.  We are very flattered that people are interested in what we do.  And even more flattered when we connect with people through our music.  But you know, with buzz comes positives and negatives.  You get people who love what you do and people who think it's complete shit.  That's all part of the game.
Barille: We're just really flattered that people give a shit about our music.  The music scene is so over-saturated right now because of Myspace and the Internet in general so the fact that people actually pay attention to what we do, it means a lot.
