Epryhme unleashes on Oly

PAUL SCHRAG: TONIGHT AT THE MARK >>>

L_fe203a23c88b5a6f9648ebe2c5980f36 Tonight, Oly hip-hop veteran Eprhyme will unleash his debut solo album, Waywordwonderwill, with beats by Smoke of Oldominion and rhymes that will knock your reality sideways. A cultural nomad with roots in what some might consider contradictory contexts, Eprhyme explores the complexities of modern American Jewish identity, life in the city, Kabbalah, and cultural healing â€" to name a few. Eprhyme is best known in the South Sound as a founding member of hip-hop anomaly Saints of Everyday Failures. Saints fans know him as a dynamic performer and awe-inspiring lyricist. Saturday, Eprhyme invites the community to help him kick off the official release of his first full-length solo album. The party begins at 9 p.m. at the Mark. Cost is $5, or $10 for entrance and a copy of Waywordwonderwill. Special appearances by The Eruv Rav, DJ Sweet Elite and a mess of drink specials will make it a celebration to remember.

[The Mark, 9 p.m., $5-$10, 407 Columbia St. S.W., Olympia, 360.754.4414]

Feeling smooth?

MATT DRISCOLL: SMOOTH OPERATORS AT THE EQC >>>

DSC0051 There are many words one can use to describe the Emerald Queen Casino â€" like smoker’s heaven, or a big money toilet, or constantly full â€" but this weekend you can add another word to the list: Smooth. That’s because semi-legendary Tacoma Jazz guitarist Ed Taylor and his band the Smooth Operators (why does that always make me think off those old Norelco commercials?) will be saddling up at the Emerald Queen on Saturday, and the results are sure to be, well, smooth. Taylor is a jazz master â€" one of the reasons it’s not surprising to find a glossary of scholarly jazz terms on his Web site â€" and when the guitar man plugs in the results are always enjoyable and relaxing â€" not to mention smooth. All right already, enough with the word smooth. Just check out Taylor and his band tonight if you get a chance.

The right stuff... for 1990

BOBBLE TIKI: RIGHT OR WRONG, NKOTB IS BACK >>>

New_kids1a That’s right, now aging teenage girls of the late ’80s and early’90s, Donnie, Jordan, Joey, Jonathan and that other one are back â€" collectively known as the New Kids on the Block â€" and tonight they’ll be hitting the Tacoma Dome.

And they say they have the right stuff.

Mark Dufresne

TONY ENGELHART: REAL BLUES AT THE SPAR >>>

MarkDufresne3 Do you want to hear some real blues? I’m not talking about that watered down shit masquerading as blues; I’m talking authentic blues. If you answered yes â€" and you know what I’m talking about â€" then Mark Dufresne will scratch your blues itch until it’s raw and bleeding. Dufresne is schooled in the ways of Sonny Boy, Junior Wells and James Cotton. One of the best chromatic harmonica players in the state, he was scooped up by the legendary Roomful of Blues in 2002 as the band wanted to return to a more traditional sound. Dufresne delivered, and the band received a Grammy nomination and won a W.C. Handy Award. In 2006, the big man returned to the Northwest, fired up his own band and now travels the world on his own merits. Like I said, if you long for some high-octane shuffles and some jumpin’ boogie woogie, Mark Dufresne is your ticket.

NKOTB Tacoma concert review

STEPH DEROSA: NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK PLAYED THE TACOMA DOME >>>

NKOTB-opening-500 We used to tell the joke, “What has a thousand legs and no pubic hair? The front row of a New Kids on the Block concert.” After attending last night’s NKOTB concert at the Tacoma Dome, I would define the fan demographic as more of a “What has a thousand legs and multiple cesarean scars.” The crowd was a sea of hormone-enraged (majority white) screaming women between the ages of 25 and 35. I’m sure they all woke up this morning with no voices left. Those concertgoers were absolutely crazy last night, to put it lightly.

Most women I spoke with before the show were out for the night away from the kids, removed from the husbands, and attending the show with old friends they grew up with while listening to NKOTB. Fans were decked out in clothes from the 1980s, and some even had their original concert shirts. My favorites were women who brought their NKOTB dolls. Don’t worry; I pulled the doll’s pants down to see if they had a proper penis bulge. Consider it a community service. Hey, don’t go getting’ all offended that I pulled their pants down â€" I can pretty much guarantee that those dolls have been violated much worse in their life.

Natasha Beddingfield opened up after Lady Gaga with a soaring vocal display that proved she really could carry a tune. She sang those two songs you’ve heard on the radio, plus a few others. I took these moments to scan the lines of beverage consumers for good 80s garb. I snapped some shots and came to the obvious conclusion that this was BY FAR the nicest crowd I’ve ever interrogated at a public event. Every single person I talked to, every person I asked to take a picture of, was more than happy to pose and chat away. Everyone had a story, and everyone had a favorite New Kid’s memory.

NKOTB-One At about 9:30 p.m., New Kids on the Block finally took the stage opening with “Single” off their new appropriately titled album The Block. While the slew of flailing female arms was still in action, the group quickly went into old favorites such as “My Favorite Girl,” “Didn’t I (Blow You’re Mind)” and a swooning rendition of “You’ve Got It (The Right Stuff).” When “The Right Stuff” began, I was scared for my life. I was up in the press box, not even part of the bleachers, and the floor still bounced like it was going to fall out beneath me. Those women, and NKOTB, literally rocked the dome last night.

Revamped old school song “Games” took the audience away with cool lighting, seductive dance moves, and great vocals. Danny Wood pulled out some moves from his old breakin’ days while other New Kid members had the crowd singing “Oh we oh we oh â€" oooohooooh.” This set the tempo for crowd involvement for the rest of the night. New Kids on the Block had the ability to get the crowd going and be involved in the show. Excellent job, guys.

NKOTB-Two Even though they were en fuego last night, and seemed to give me a little femme-boner, there were a couple of things I noticed about the aging superstars. For instance, Jordan Knight’s falsetto was not as high as it once was, and poor Donnie Wahlberg seemed to become tone deaf during his “Cover Girl” solo. I was a little embarrassed for him. And I wanted to pull his baggy pants up. C’mon dude, you’re almost 40. It’s not cool to dress in gangsta-bling when you’re 40.

I couldn’t tell if the cheesy moments of rehearsed onstage banter and positive lecturing still made the girls swoon, but they seemed to pull it off by always going directly into an energetic song that made you glad you were witnessing a moment in reunion tour history.

I liked new songs “Summertime” and “Closer” and appreciated the encore lineup of “Step By Step” and “Hangin’ Tough.” “Hangin’ Tough” was changed up a bit by adding a little Queen cover in the mix, “We Will Rock You.” This was something I could definitely dig.

Admittedly, I’ve never been a NKOTB fan â€" so you know these compliments are genuine and not based on any internal reactions of my suppressed teenage hormones. I’ll save those reactions for more inappropriate times â€" like political fund-raisers. These guys were still hot, could still dance, and for the most part â€"still carry a tune.

Ale House hosts End-A-Roke

MICHAEL SWAN: SING WITH A LIVE BAND >>>

Wednesday, The Ale House will host End-A-Roke, where wannabe Robert Plants and Christina Aguileras will get the chance to grab the mike and sing along in front of an audience. Yeah, that's no different than any other karaoke night at any other bar in the world. What sets End-Roke apart is those brave, possibly tone-deaf souls do all of this with an accompanying live band.

Sponsored by The End 107.7FM, the band will be ready for you to rock from 9-11 p.m.

The Ale House will also be giving away a trip to New York City to see Kings of Leon.

Local country singer Becca Rae will warm up the crow at 6 p.m.

Sounds like a righteous Thanksgiving Eve night.

Dinner with DeRosa

STEPH DEROSA: HANGIN’ TOUGH >>>

Lucky, or maybe unlucky, for you guys â€" I went to the New Kids on the Block show last night at the Tacoma Dome.  Not only do you get a stunning review, but you also get a Dinner with DeRosa containing guests from last night’s events.  Here are a few NKOTB FANatics I’m inviting to my imaginary dinner this week.  I’ll be serving a $7 pretzel with a cup of cheese, compliments of Tacoma Dome concessions.

Dinner-1123-Amber-Ogle.-Man Amber Ogle, Mandy Kipter, and Missy Hirschmann are three crazy girls who are my first guests this week.  Hell, all the girls I met last night were crazy.  Note the jelly sandals on these fine gals.

Dinner-1123-Amy-Bryan.-Laur Amy Bryan and Lauren Fox will hopefully join me for a cold, hard, once heated Tacoma Dome pretzel.  They made their own shirts, can you tell?  No, they’re not bedazzled.  I asked.

Dinner-1123-Lauren-Perrault Lauren Perrault and Leslie Fox bought these shirts on eBay for $40.  I’m thinking at this point they could use a free dinner.  You know, so they can afford to buy another $40 t-shirt or something.

Dinner-1123-Kendra-Wellner. Kendra Wellner, Sarah Godfrey, and Adrianne Fowler are three sisters who were in town for the night from Spokane.  They were away from the kids, so this was their night to party.  Either that or get some quite sleep for once.

Dinner-1123-kasie-Wierdinge Kasie Wierdinger, Megan Rodriguez, Kelsey Ehrens, Crystal Best, and Amber Anderson were my favorites.  They had their original New Kids on the Block dolls around their necks.  These dolls come equipped with braided rattails coming out the back.  I about died when I saw that.  Real rattails!

Dinner-1123-Katie-K Lastly, Katie K. will be joining us for dinner.  Just look at her sign!  You know you’d invite her, too.  She said she’d bring the Jagermeister, which I can only assume will be half full by the time it reaches our dinner table.

Mangiamo!
