OH GEE WIZ: Motopony partners with Southwest Airlines for a somewhat ridiculous promotion

Work on your frequent flyer miles with Motopony next Wednesday. Photography by Genieve Pierson

TODAY IN PRESS RELEASES >>>

I'm really not even sure what to say about this one ... It's a press release that just trickled in from Sacks & Co, the PR marketing machine behind "Seattle's" Motopony. That's a good place to start. Where the conversation goes from there I'll leave up to you, Gentle Reader ...

PRESS RELEASE

Seattle's rising glitch-folk band Motopony will perform intimate acoustic sets for Southwest Airlines Customers in Baltimore, St. Louis, Dallas and Los Angeles on June 29 in celebration of Southwest Airline's 40th Anniversary. Conceived by Southwest Airlines' advertising partner GSD&M, the "Southwest Airlines 40th Anniversary Tour featuring Motopony," will feature the band  flying from city to city, beginning in Baltimore at 7:00 a.m. EDT, creating a concert atmosphere out of the Southwest Airlines terminal in each market. The one-day tour will conclude with a set at Southwest Airlines Baggage Claim in Los Angeles International Airport at 8:25 p.m. PDT.

Southwest Customers will be treated to songs from Motopony's self-titled debut album, available now via tinyOGRE Entertainment. Along the way, Southwest flight attendants will be handing out Motopony swag, and customers will have the chance to win a limited edition tour poster.

Motopony's first album has received early support from the influential KCRW with the band appearing on "Morning Becomes Eclectic" as well as critical acclaim from NPR Music, KEXP, NYLON, AOL Spinner, RCRD LBL and many others. The single "King of Diamonds" was featured as iTunes' Indie Spotlight Download of the Week and NYLON Guys recently premiered the "King of Diamonds" video noting that "with easy vocals and strummy guitar riffs, their self-titled debut is relaxing, invigorating, and downright addictive all at the same time." View the video here: http://youtu.be/ncV8uX4X-HU.

The band is set to tour this summer including dates with Those Darlins along with a free show at Pasadena's One Colorado on June 25 for KCRW's Summer Nights Series. Please see reverse for a list of shows.

Motopony is fronted by lead singer, songwriter, former fashion designer and writer Daniel Blue along with collaborators Buddy Ross, Brantley Cady and Forrest Mauvais. The four-piece group has quickly risen through the Seattle music scene receiving praise from KEXP while Seattle Weekly called them one of the "nine up-and-coming bands at the heart of Seattle's music scene" and Tacoma's Weekly Volcano named them "Tacoma's Best New Band." Additional info on the band is available at www.facebook.com/Motopony.

RAINIERS MINUTE: Tough losses all around

THANK GOD FOR BOOZE >>>

Last night, the Tacoma Rainiers (33-40) lost to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in fourteen innings by a score of 4-5.

This is frustrating for any number of reasons.

First, the loss comes on the heels of a particularly rough series against the Salt Lake Bees. Second, the loss means the Rainiers are still struggling to find their footing in the post-Ackley era, having lost five of their last six, and having fallen to ten full games back of Reno in the PCL Pacific North division .

Finally, and most notably, last night felt like a game the Rainiers were going to win.

I don't know why, really. The team was down most of the game. But they still seemed strong. Rainiers' starting pitcher, knuckleballer Charlie Haeger looked competent, going seven innings and striking out six. The team, down 4-2 in the eighth, rallied to take the game to extras. And even though the Sky Sox went up 5-4 in the fourteenth, Matt Tuiasosopo stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the final inning and led off with a double.

When Tuiasosopo hit the double I thought, "This is it!" The Rainiers are going to win. Walk off fashion, baby. Dramatics. Down, then tied, then down again, then win! Put all that Ackley stuff, all that trouble winning at home stuff, all that recent struggles stuff behind them. Win a well-fought, claw from behind game to erase some recent doubts.

The Rainiers didn't win. They lost. The three batters that followed Tui all floundered, and the team sulked into the night. They lost after four hour of hard baseball . They lost a game where they never seemed out of it until the Sky Sox were trotting off the field.

It's funny how the games with the most potential to erase doubts can easily flip the other way. After last night's loss, the doubts are still here, and the team still struggles.

Notes ...

-The Rainiers Minute has yet to have any significant coverage of Dustin Ackley's call up to the Mariners. We thought you were probably sick of every news outlet in the Tri-State area covering the crap out of it. And, as long as we here at the Volcano don't cover his call-up, we can kind of pretend it never happened. You know, ignorance is bliss. La, la, la. Everything is fine. Dustin Ackley is still in a Rainiers' uniform. We don't wake up in cold sweats every night knowing our stud of a second baseman is no longer with the team. La, la, la. Everything is fine.

-I have a theory about Luke French. You know, the same Luke French that posted a 2.94 ERA in 113 innings with the Rainiers last season. The Luke French that helped lead the team to a PCL Championship. The Luke French who is struggling this year, with a 6.16 ERA and a win-loss record of 3-5.

Luke French's wife is pregnant. Due any minute.

I know. This shouldn't change his play, right? Because we, as the media and the public, have grown accustomed to thinking baseball players are unstoppable robots who would never, ever let their personal lives affect their play on the diamond.

But maybe French has had more on his mind than striking out Reno Aces. More on his mind than his fastball. Hell, baseball players are men. Babies, and wives being pregnant, are huge. Bigger than baseball. Bigger than pitches. Hell, I'm a profesio... well, I know professionals who would let something way smaller than a baby effect their work.

Maybe, and this is just a theory, French will calm down after the baby is out. Return to last year's numbers. Have a clear head and a strong arm. Just a theory.

And French, if you are one of those robotic ‘professionals' that would never let the thought of a baby creep into your head while you're on the mound: fix your arm, dammit. We need you back to last year's numbers to give this team some umph.

- Fans can now vote for which Minor League players attend the upcoming Triple-A All Star Game. I trust the readers will perform their due diligence and vote for every Rainier on the ballot.

The Rainiers try to snap out of their funk tonight at 7:05 p.m.. And even if they don't, a decent day at Cheney still means good times and beers on the burm.

Clowning around with Olympia's Jusby the Clown

CLOWN CAMP CURRICULUM INCLUDES JUGGLING & JOKING >>>

Kids who want to run away and join the circus can get a head start at Clown Camp offered by Olympia's Jusby the Clown (aka Justin Wright).

The camp, for class clown types ages 7 to 14, will be held from Saturday, June 25, to Wednesday, June 29. Details can be found here. Among the offerings are laughter yoga, clown costuming and makeup, juggling, joking, balloon twisting, puppetry and dance.

But, parents, beware: Kids will also be learning Jusby's specialty: pie-in-the-face delivery.

If that doesn't dissuade you, Jusby's website (jusbytheclown.com) includes a description of what happens when you get a pie in the face: "I strive to plant my pies squarely on the intended face with no spillage on clothing. Nevertheless, faces come in all shapes and sizes, and the pie is filled with a viscous fluid (whipped topping) that will slide down and may reach your garments. You can plan to dress appropriately (machine washable in hot water). You can ask for a smock, bib or apron. You can have a towel handy. You can tell me no!"

Think about it. Does your child listen when you say no?

The camp ends with a circus performance. (No word on whether the campers' families will end up with pie on their faces.)

The cost is $250 for the whole camp or $50 per day. Go to jusbytheclown.com/clowncamp or call 360.888.2729.

Oh, and if you need to get back at the kids, Jusby offers a clown camp for adults on evenings and weekends. It's by invitation.

Constantly evolving - Jazzbones on Sixth Avenue

Jazzbones on Sixth Avenue in Tacoma

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE WHILE RECOGNIZING THE PAST >>>

What began over a decade ago as a jazz club featuring original music by local musicians (no cover charge and a casual menu of burgers and pizza)  has since morphed dramatically. In its prime, Jazzbones Restaurant & Nightclub presented Tacoma with performances by Grammy Award winners, $25 tickets and white-table-cloth-and-candlelight steak and seafood dinners. New ownership in 2006 brought DJs and cover bands. At the time, the Sixth Avenue nightlife destination had the distinction of being the only live-music venue of its caliber with a sushi bar. In 2008, live music took a serious backseat to DJs. A younger, heavier-drinking crowd overrode the thirtysomethings and blues-loving baby boomers. Salmon Oscar and T-bone steak dishes were replaced with deli sandwiches and fried hot wings.

Lately it seems the nightclub is changing shape again. General Manager Dan Rankin and the newly hired chef, Victor Cangie of California, share details of just what's taking place at Jazzbones.

In January, Rankin hired well-respected Northwest booking agent Reed Riley to redirect and improve the club's live music offerings. Riley is Vicci Martinez's former manager and Jazzbones' original booking agent.

"I'm really focused on bringing back some of those things that made Jazzbones so good in the past," Rankin says, nodding several times before shifting topic to a new dining menu.

In the kitchen, Cangie incorporates many elements from Jazzbones history. Cangie grins, "It's a bit of everything; like the people I've seen come here." Small, sharable plates of moderately priced Cajun, Asian, European and American cuisine are dubbed global-bar-fusion. Hand-formed burgers, pizza and full entrées are also offered. Rankin sounds pleased as he talks about hand-folded wontons, using farmers market produce and burgers made from grass-fed, 100% certified Black Angus beef from Misty Isle Farms. Check out Chef Vic's Tabasco-infused New Orleans sauce, a flavor-packed rémoulade that punches up alligator and frog leg appetizers. Also, his sushi-grade raw tuna poke spiked with black sesame and ginger sans seaweed is worth sinking your teeth into. A new menu will be fully launched by the end of June and is intentionally light on seafood so as not to detract from the sushi bar.

Those looking for a more intimate dining experience than the cafeteria-style main floor just need to climb the stairs. Rankin's efforts to reenergize the "Balcony Gallery," a name given to the nightclub's second floor in 2004, are already paying off. A fresh coat of paint, mural art by James Allan Tucker, bottle service at new half-moon booths and big screens for viewing entertainment achieve an upbeat, urban ambience. The balcony will once again feature rotating local artwork; Rankin enlisted the creative energies of artists James Hume and Tucker to that end.

"You can sit comfortably and have a conversation without yelling. It's just a better sound quality up there, overall," Rankin says.

Rankin adds that the club's sound system will be hardwired this month by Bandstand Music, eliminating visible cords and cables. Back downstairs, main floor lighting will be improved this summer to increase menu reading ability. New chairs have already been added to increase dining comfort.

Just as Jazzbones' original owner Jason MacKinnon did, Rankin is delving into philanthropic community involvement; Rankin says a "Jazzbones vs. Masa" employee softball game will be held in late summer or early fall at Cheney Stadium. Funds raised will go to a local charity or worthy cause still to be determined.

COMMENT OF THE DAY: The rules of trickery

ONLINE CHATTER >>>

Today's comment comes from Becky Knold in response to yesterday's "Clayton on Art" SPEW post, in which Alec discusses trompe le'oeil.

Knold writes,

Trickery and Illusion... no one likes to be tricked and fooled... unless they are somehow "in" on the joke. The job of the artist, it would seem, is to somehow let the viewer know that he knows that they know, and that it's cool to be "in the know". But if the artist is simply trying to fool the public, he will never succeed (and if by some chance he did, he will be resented for it!). Play nice with your friends.

WHAT’S THE WORD with Josh Rizeberg: Getting Leezy

Leezy Soprano

SOUTH SOUND HIP HOP FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS IT >>>

Leezy Soprano is doing it right now! He's getting props from The Seattle Times almost every time he drops a video, and he drops a lot of videos. These videos - plus his clever wordplay, cadence and all-around-coolness - have brought Leezy's buzz-up to an impressive level. I'd say Leezy's climb started when he released his last album, and continued through some dope cameos. Then he dropped the "Back To It" video, and ish just kind of got bananas. He's been on quite the roll ever since -- gaining more steam as the Y-Life Movement takes off. His new mixtape is titled Divided We Fall, and you can score it here.

THIS WEEK’S VOLCANO MUSIC SECTION: The Dignitaries, Yard Bird Benefit, Saucy Yoda and more …

The Dignitaries like to literally hang out in garages.

GOODNESS IN STORE IN PRINT & ONLINE >>>

Oh, yeah, sure. We did put out a cover story on Tacoma Hempfest this week. I get it. Very funny.  You think because of this, maybe we forgot the normal Volcano music section? You think maybe we just "spaced it out?" Maybe we accidentally ate it? Maybe we "put it in our pipe and smoked it?"

Silence! Your stereotypes are dumb! And unfounded! We're high almost every week. And, besides - we haven't missed a Volcano music section in our entire ten-year existence. It's not going to start now!

Here's a look at the musical goodness in store in print and online ...

THE DIGNITARIES

The Dignitaries are a garage band. This aesthetic is one they've honed to a fine craft. On the band's debut LP, Rocket Science, 15 songs blaze by in a fuzzy haze of two-minute bursts. Like the album's name might suggest, these songs are all fire and momentum - spent after a brief window, with the sulfury smell of damage left in their wake. - Rev. Adam McKinney

YARD BIRD BENEFIT

Skinny and Fatty: The Story of Yard Birds (Trailer) from Rob Hugo on Vimeo.

Saturday's Birdfest 2011 is Mattson's largest Yard Bird fundraiser yet, and he hopes to raise the $10,000 needed to complete repairs. A full day of all-ages activities in the Yard Birds parking lot, centered around Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artists Don Wilson and Nokie Edwards of the Ventures, along with Barry Curtis and Steven Peterson of the Kingsmen, with Lt. Gov. Brad Owen on sax, Birdfest 2011 will also have face-painting and bounce houses for the kiddies, and a beer garden for adults. Giveaways and raffles will play a prominent roll, including a chance at an autographed guitar from the Ventures. ... -- Nikki Talotta

LEEZY SOPRANO & TACOMA HIP-HOP NEWS

Leezy's climb started when he released his last album, and continued through some dope cameos. Then he dropped the "Back To It " video, and ish just kind of got bananas. He's been on quite the roll ever since -- gaining more steam as the Y-Life Movement takes off. - Josh Rizeberg

SAUCY YODA

The last time I saw Saucy Yoda, it was at an underground benefit show being thrown for a friend. Standing in front of the stage with just a microphone in hand, being accompanied by a prerecorded backing track, Saucy Yoda unleashed a flurry of absurd party jams that incorporate equal parts hip-hop and electro-clash attitude. - Rev. CUP CHECK: Promotions gone stupid

Find the Cup Check column in the classifieds section of the Weekly Volcano every week!

WEEKLY SPORTS COVERAGE LIKE NOWHERE ELSE >>>

While the major leagues are generally void of the bizarre promotions that help make the minor leagues so interesting, occasionally someone comes up with a good one.

More often, though, someone comes up with a really lame one ... like what we witnessed Tuesday night in Arlington, Texas, when the Rangers (with the help of an apathetic and trapped crowd) broke the Guinness record for "Most People Wearing Sunglasses in the Dark." A Yahoo Sports blog provided photographic evidence of the event via former President George W. Bush and Rangers President Nolan Ryan, sitting together in attendance during the feat, and both wearing the very chill-wave-looking, free, stupid sunglasses.

As was also noted by the Fort Worth Star Telegram, the previous record for "Most People Wearing Sun Glasses in the Dark" was 424.
