Fleet Feet Group Runs

There's a new store preparing to open in early October in the Proctor District-Fleet Feet! To keep you busy until the grand opening, this locally owned sports store is hosting group runs every Tuesday.

Fleet Feet's group runs are open to the public and start at 6:30 p.m. from the still-in-progress storefront at 3812 North 26th Street. Joining in is free! You can walk or you can run, so don't shy away if your feet aren't so fleet!

"There is a three-mile loop and an approximately 6.5-mile loop," says store manager Jena Winger. "The run/walk begins at 6:30 and are typically preceded by a presentation by one of our vendors. In the past few weeks, this has included New Balance, Brooks and Saucony."

The schedule of presentations is available at the store's website: http://www.fleetfeettacoma.com/calendar

Along with the weekly run, Fleet Feet is several weeks into a 10K, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon training program with participants prepping for the You Go Girl 10K/Half or the Portland 10K/Half/Full Marathon.

Bourbon and Bites in Tacoma

Libations and delicious food at Maxwell's Speakeasy

I've been noticing a trend lately — one I'm quite fond of — the pairing of delicious dishes and libations in the form of tasting events at local establishments. You can find beer dinners, wine tastings and now add to the list the Kentucky Bourbon Trail this week at Maxwell's Speakeasy.

Beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 22), hosts Todd Buckley and bartendress Liliana Franz will guide you through a historical bourbon trail with seven bourbons paired with seven perfect bites. Yes, not only is this a bourbon tasting with complimentary dishes, this is also a history lesson on the brown liquor. Now you can be educated and know all about your booze of choice. Featured bourbons of the evening include Heaven Hill, Four Roses, Jim Beam Devil's Cut, Wild Turkey Rye, Maker's 46, Woodinville Whiskey and Woodford Reserve.

Maxwell's new executive chef Hudson Slater (who has been with Maxwell's Speakeasy sporadically since its inception and recently has moved up the ranks from Maxwell's sous chef to his current position) has produced a menu exclusively for this event with dishes infused with loads of flavor and peppered with Cajun influence, starting with an ahi crudo served with a radish salad and chimichurri and candied green peppercorns. Main dishes like an espresso and cinnamon rubbed, seared duck breast, ginger carrot puree and crispy tarragon and orange oil, and finishing with sweet eats in a smoked chocolate pate and a grilled peach desserts.

Tickets are only $39 must be purchased before the event, as space is limited to 25 guests. Be prepared for a historical and tasty journey.

Cupcake love

While the Tacoma area has many cupcake shops to choose from, Hello, Cupcake remains my favorite. Maybe it's because that's where I got my first adult cupcake-one without a little plastic topper of a ballerina or a soccer ball. They sell toppers like that, but I'm a grown up now. I don't buy them. The memories of that first chocolate-chocolate cupcake remain strong, lodged in my heart like a hunk of cholesterol.

Hello, Cupcake continues to mix it up a bit with seasonal flavors. Why have that chocolate or red velvet or vanilla? Live a little. Get the seasonal cupcake.

This month, there are two special cupcakes on tap-rootbeer float and lemon blackberry. I sampled the lemon blackberry-a lemon cupcake topped with blackberry buttercream and a blackberry. While it could have had more lemony kick, I enjoyed the mild tartness and there was even a secret blackberry lurking within the cake itself.

Hempfest in Olympia

Grab the rolling papers; Hempfest is happening this Saturday in Olympia.

“I encourage people to come out and enjoy this year’s event, we have a brand new crew and they have done a great job putting this year’s event together,” says Jeremy Miller, founder and director of the Olympia Hempfest.

Saturday, from 10 a.m – 8 p.m., Heritage Park in downtown Olympia will be filled with live performances, vendors, food, raffles and more.

Guest speakers and live music will get festival participants in the mood, and information regarding hemp and marijuana will be readily available.

“I’m looking forward to raising awareness about the most misunderstood plant on the planet,” says Miller, who became a hemp activist in 1992 after meeting Jack Herer at an event in Berkeley, California.

Olympia Hempfest has been a free gathering for the people since 2003 and continues to be a beacon of awareness, support and fun surrounding the medical and recreational use of cannabis.

“This event is important because it raises awareness about the social injustice of marijuana prohibition and reminds people about our heritage,” says Miller.
