Took the car out for a spin this afternoon to check out the South Tacoma region and stumbled on a couple establishments worth mentioning. 
Ginger's Corner Cafe (4823 S. 66th St., across from the Manitou Community Center) is a sleek, northwest style coffee house serving prepared sandwiches, cookies, treats and, of course, coffee.  Nice colors inside â€" a beacon on an otherwise desolate stretch of street.  My black forest ham and swiss on a croissant was excellent.
Bill's Place (5420 S. Tacoma Way) is a sight to be seen.  Rough on the edges and everywhere else, the soup kitchen atmosphere is outshined by the low prices and decent burgers.  Bill is both friendly and missing some teeth, but that doesn't stop him from serving up an onion burger and fries for less than $5.  He serves dinner, but he is only open from 8-4 p.m. so let's call it lunch.  I'm going back for the Fish Wich.  Pray for me. â€" Jason de Paul

The MIchael Miller Band won the Memphis Competition held at the Freedom Fair on the Fourth of July. The South Sound Blues Association will be sending the Michael Miller Band to Memphis for the International Blues Competition.

The Martini Beach Party at the Beach House in Purdy July 25 promises to be a real shindig.  However, they have two warnings on their Web site.  One, reservations are due TODAY for the $18.50 per person soiree.  Second, it's not a nude beach.  Hmmmm.  The event includes two drinks and beach bites (appetizers).  RSVP at (253) 858-9900.

You won't want to miss this one.  Metro Parks will place 280 goats to work at Blueberry Park (East 80th and East D streets) Saturday to eliminate the weeds choking the park.  The goats arrive with herding dogs.  They are an eco-friendly way to munch stuff nobody else wants. â€" Ken Swarner

The bodies are splashing in water, to operatic singing.   Up the stairs, bodies are writhing, posing, spreading, to poetry: “There are so many beautiful bodies out there that don’t know it…but I do…” repeats the guy with the Old Navy-looking microphone. Down below where the beautiful bodies, different bodies are moving, stretching, reaching, expanding, and shrinking, to…silence?
“The city landscape provides sounds and images that could be the music for the piece,” explains Krissa Englebright, an observer with a super-cool Viszla and darn-cute kid.  She also happens to be a dancer and teacher of creative dance, who, along with her troupe, performed last week in the SiteWorks site-specific dance exhibit at the Museum of Glass, and has some expertise on the topic. We are watching Walrus Dance Company as they perform their improvisational dance on the steps going down the side of the hot-shop on the exterior of the MOG. 
I walked over from my own special secret-squirrel parking spot at the UWT (shhhh, don’t tell anyone!) and  was excited to see people â€" actual living, breathing, walking people coming over the BOG (Bridge of Glass, don’cha know.) It’s the first time I’ve seen so many people so enthused about third Thursday.  Call it hot weather, and people wanting to get out.  Call it a culturally enlightened T-Town (I like the sound of “DoTa,” for downtown Tacoma.)  Call it what you want.  I call it very, very cool. â€" Story and photography by Jessica Corey-Butler
