Ch-ch-ch-changes

We should all be like David Bowie. We should all dress like David Bowie, wear eyeliner like David Bowie, do our hair like David Bowie. We should all try to become androgynous, bisexual rock stars from other planets, just like David Bowie.
And next Thursday, we should all go see David Bowie.
Puyallup Park's 2006 Concert Series includes a special July 27 tribute to the music of David Bowie.
We should all be like David Bowie.
July 27, 6:30 p.m., free, Pioneer Park, 324 S. Meridian, Puyallup. â€" Suzy Stump

Tacoma’s art assets increase

Roxanne Murphy, community relations specialist with the Tacoma Community and Economic Development Department, has produced another Forward Tacoma newsletter.  This item caught our eye. â€" Suzy Stump

  1. Tacoma will soon gain an art supply store downtown, an amenity that many have requested, near the Convention Center.
  2. The Modern Villa Gallery recently opened at 1703 C Dock St. For more information, go to their Web site.
  3. The Sixth Avenue Art Gallery will make its debut from 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at 2610-B Sixth Ave.

Puppet fetish

Are you aware the Pacific Northwest region of Puppeteers of America meets Aug. 4-7 at the University of Puget Sound?  Mallory Lewis, the daughter of Sherrie Lewis, is bringing Lambchop.  Pinch me! â€" Brad Allen

Noshing in South Tacoma

Took the car out for a spin this afternoon to check out the South Tacoma region and stumbled on a couple establishments worth mentioning.
Ginger's Corner Cafe (4823 S. 66th St., across from the Manitou Community Center) is a sleek, northwest style coffee house serving prepared sandwiches, cookies, treats and, of course, coffee.  Nice colors inside â€" a beacon on an otherwise desolate stretch of street.  My black forest ham and swiss on a croissant was excellent.
Bill's Place (5420 S. Tacoma Way) is a sight to be seen.  Rough on the edges and everywhere else, the soup kitchen atmosphere is outshined by the low prices and decent burgers.  Bill is both friendly and missing some teeth, but that doesn't stop him from serving up an onion burger and fries for less than $5.  He serves dinner, but he is only open from 8-4 p.m. so let's call it lunch.  I'm going back for the Fish Wich.  Pray for me. â€" Jason de Paul

Martini Beach Party at Beach House

The Martini Beach Party at the Beach House in Purdy July 25 promises to be a real shindig.  However, they have two warnings on their Web site.  One, reservations are due TODAY for the $18.50 per person soiree.  Second, it's not a nude beach.  Hmmmm.  The event includes two drinks and beach bites (appetizers).  RSVP at (253) 858-9900.
In other Beach House news, they start Sunday brunch July 30, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. â€" Jason de Paul

280 goats â€" oh my!

You won't want to miss this one.  Metro Parks will place 280 goats to work at Blueberry Park (East 80th and East D streets) Saturday to eliminate the weeds choking the park.  The goats arrive with herding dogs.  They are an eco-friendly way to munch stuff nobody else wants. â€" Ken Swarner

No nudes, but still cool

The Peninsula Art League in Gig Harbor offers would-be artists three hours with a costumed model on Wednesdays for free figure drawing, 1-4 p.m. at Skansie Park in downtown Gig Harbor through Sept. 27.  A few easels and paintbrushes are available, but bring your own just in case.  How cool is that?  Call (253) 265-6358 for more information, or hit their Web site. â€" Michael Swan

Thursday, July 20: SiteWorks final show at Museum of Glass

Siteworksone Stieworksimage2 Siteworksdancestarsone Siteworksdancestairs The bodies are splashing in water, to operatic singing.   Up the stairs, bodies are writhing, posing, spreading, to poetry: “There are so many beautiful bodies out there that don’t know it…but I do…” repeats the guy with the Old Navy-looking microphone. Down below where the beautiful bodies, different bodies are moving, stretching, reaching, expanding, and shrinking, to…silence?
“The city landscape provides sounds and images that could be the music for the piece,” explains Krissa Englebright, an observer with a super-cool Viszla and darn-cute kid.  She also happens to be a dancer and teacher of creative dance, who, along with her troupe, performed last week in the SiteWorks site-specific dance exhibit at the Museum of Glass, and has some expertise on the topic. We are watching Walrus Dance Company as they perform their improvisational dance on the steps going down the side of the hot-shop on the exterior of the MOG.
I walked over from my own special secret-squirrel parking spot at the UWT (shhhh, don’t tell anyone!) and  was excited to see people â€" actual living, breathing, walking people coming over the BOG (Bridge of Glass, don’cha know.) It’s the first time I’ve seen so many people so enthused about third Thursday.  Call it hot weather, and people wanting to get out.  Call it a culturally enlightened T-Town (I like the sound of “DoTa,” for downtown Tacoma.)  Call it what you want.  I call it very, very cool. â€" Story and photography by Jessica Corey-Butler
