Mondo Bizarro in Tacoma

After last year’s last-minute attempt to put together a Halloween costume, I've learned there may be wisdom in planning a little earlier â€" like do it tomorrow.

I'm off to see the new Mondo Bizarro store inside downtown Tacoma's Sanford and Son. After six years of owning and operating a similar shop in Charleston, South Carolina, Peter and Julie Triplett have made their way back home to open Mondo Bizzaro decided that it was time to return to their home state of Washington and their new business on Tacoma’s Antique Row in the Theater District.

There's has to be something Halloween-ish in their store loaded with alternative comics, robots, vinyl toys, and curious gifts. â€" Suzy Stump

Short skirts, fishnets, and fangs in Tacoma

It was a dark, and foggy night.  The leaves scraped the Tacoma concrete, forced on their way by the wind as a crescent moon hung low and golden in the sky.

Halloweenswisskiss_1 Werewolves, ghouls, and the undead were less bountiful on Saturday than the scantily clad French Maids (this year’s hot pick outfit) and while Milli (or was it Vanilli?) from Just Dirt entertained a crowd at the Swiss Pub, Kiss was on hand, not as entertainment, but certainly entertaining in their handcrafted vests and platform footwear.

As the night progressed, Little-but-very-tall Red Riding Hood became progressively wasted, and was helped out by smoking Merlin. Strawberry not-so-Shortcake and a bevy of other gals with great legs in high heels brought forth moans of ecstasy from at least one man at a table by the front doors, who appeared to be on a rapid downward spiral toward incomprehension. I thought the three firemen walking through the Swiss purposefully looked legitimately attired, and in point of fact, they, like the policemen in front of the Swiss, were there on official business, unlike the policewoman in the “TWAT” hat. Marie Antoinette and Little-but-very- well-endowed Bo Peep made a showing, and while The Keg was gone for the evening, I think the mammogram man might have made a play for Bo.  I’m not certain, as I didn’t see him pushing his “free mammogram, press here” box toward the pair.

Special thanks to Gerry Collen for capturing the following shots at the Swiss Pub.

Halloween1 Haloween2 Halloween3 Halloween4 Halloween5 Halloween6 Halloween7 Halloween8 Halloween9 Halloween10 Halloween11 Halloween12 While The Swiss had the liveliest of the Halloween gatherings that I witnessed on Saturday, that party wasn’t the only game in Tacoma.

Syren Lounge appeared to be on light and kicking it, with French maids and taxis aplenty, and three other hall parties spewed smoking revelers out of their doors.

Halloweenspar1Halloweenspar2 While enjoying some creativity-with-sharp-implements in action at the pumpkin carving gig at the Spar, I ran into a dimpled clown and gilded Cleopatra. I was invited to a house party, but somehow managed to lose the truck I was following out.  I was feeling a bit under dressed, anyway, fearing my “incognito Volcano scribe” outfit might be a bit too subtle for most.

So then I was off to Magoos, where I found a table of ghouls looking dejected into their beers.
I decided to head out to my own version of home-away-from-home-on-evenings-out and ended my evening on a mellow note at Tempest Lounge, tempted by the new menu and the “Pink Pussycat.” It’s a drink, sort of like the Monsoon Room’s Boom Boom Room â€" simply put, gin and grapefruit juice with just a hint of pineapple loveliness. Thanks Larry!

And then, as I went home escorted by the watchful moon, fatigued by all I had witnessed, I realized the time was fully one hour earlier than it should have been: Fall forward and into bed. â€" Jessica Corey Butler

Night of the Living Tribute Bands photos

Although it's been done in the past, this seems to be the year that the idea of rock bands performing as other, more famous rock bands has caught on as the Halloween thing to do.  Last night at the Capitol Theater, Olympia rockers banded together to perform hits from The Sex Pistols, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, Blondie, Iggy and the Stooges, and Operation Ivy to raise funds for the theater's sound equipment.

While I will review Night of the Living Tribute Bands in Thursday's print edition of the Weekly Volcano, I thought I'd post a few photographs from the fun night, including Jimmi Davies who nailed Johnny Rotten, a female Iggy Pop, and costume contest winner who dressed as Elliot from "E.T."

More Halloween shots

Fake blood? Not so much.  High heels? Plenty were seen, even on the boys, for this year’s weekend before Halloween costume fun about the town. A sampling of Tacoma Halloween wardrobes showed that creativity and fun were paramount â€" with a liberal dose of sex appeal juicing up the scene.

Hallowround2pirate Jumpin’ Jack (Flash) Sparrow’s taste in women seems to have shifted to the ghoulish with Jill Dietz at the Swiss Pub.

Hallowround2redriding Little Red Riding Hood Maggie Tasse contemplates eras with her gladiator husband, Tim at the Swiss Pub.

Hallowround2cleopatra Renee Seamount clowns around with Cleopatra Chris at the Spar in Old Town Tacoma before heading out to a house party.

Hallowround2mullet Starsky John Vaughn and the Mullet Man Scrunt Jolies are joined by their random scary ghoul friend Brandon Pontbriant at the Swiss. â€" jessica Corey-Butler

Tacoma's Smartest Person Contest

It’s a dilemma.  Do I defend my title as the Universe’s Smartest Human (or at least, Tacoma’s best speller) on Nov. 2 at Doyle’s Public House and King’s Books? Or do I skulk away, because if I don’t show up, I can say I wasn’t beaten?

Twisted logic, I know, and actually it sounds like the Tacoma’s Smartest Person Contest will be wicked good fun, just like the spelling bee was.  The evening will start at 5 p.m., at Doyle’s, for the Trivia Challenge, which will be comprised of written trivia as well as a sort of “trivia bee.”  I know I would rock at that, because I have a mind like a steel trap that takes useless minutiae and holds onto it for far longer than it should.

And then there’s the spelling bee at King's Books, which registers starting at 7 p.m., and begins at 7:30.  I’ll bet that I could pool resources with Amanda again, and we could set knees trembling with our spelling prowess once again.

What if I do lose?  Would I have to wear the dunce cap sweet pea wore for the King’s Web site shoot? Because really, I’m not sure that particular shape of hat would suit my facial features.

It’s a good cause, with proceeds going to the Scholars and Champions Association.  And smart is sexy and fun.  Still, the dilemma rages. â€" Jessica Corey-Butler

Deck The Hall Ball 2006

Each holiday season, wherever Bobble Tiki goes â€" the office, the mall, his own hut â€" there’s always some cheer-drunk yutz with a cheap boombox and a stack of torturous Christmas CDs. John Denver's A John Denver Christmas. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s Once Upon A Christmas. Or that god-awful Barbra Streisand thing. And that hideous Forgotten Carols record. They all have that slick, feel-good warmth, the kind that doesn’t soothe so much as it causes your spine to shimmy in terror/discomfort. Bobble Tiki's refuses to even link the albums.

Bobble Tiki's favorite holiday music goes on sale Saturday at 10 a.m.  The 15th annual non-denominational 107.7 The End's Deck The Hall Ball 2006 will be held again on a Thursday, Dec. 7, at KeyArena.  Gnarls Barkley, Snow Patrol, My Chemical Romance, The Shins, Jet, Taking Back Sunday, Pete Yorn and Angels and Airwaves will fill Bobble Tiki's head with holiday cheer, as well as the  monster eggnog made with lighter fluid he'll be swigging from his coat pocket.

Tickets are $37.50 plus whatever Ticketmaster adds on. â€" Bobble Tiki
