Lance Kagey blows

RON SWARNER: TACOMA ARTIST MAKES OWN HIS TROPHY >>>

As one of the prizes for the May 30 Frost Park Chalk Off the winner would receive the opportunity to create his own glass trophy during the Hilltop Artists in Residence Open House, which was yesterday at Jason Lee middle School.

Lance Kagey won said Chalk Off.  He drew an amazing multi-panel Pinocchio, with long pencil nose, which terminated around the corner with the words "RR Anderson is The Best Illustrator in the Universe."

Last night Tacoma Mama snapped a shot of Kagey working on his hand-blown glass trophy during the Open House.

Lancekageybloes Remember the next Frost Park Chalk Off is tomorrow at noon. Tacoma Urbanist has the scoop.

Thanks Tacoma Mama!

My kissing dock closed

BRAD ALLEN: NOT KISSING ON THE DOCK BY THE BAY >>>

The City’s Public Works Department will put a crimp on my love life when they close the Old Town Dock due to constructional concerns tomorrow. No more late-night kisses under the stars.

After a visual inspection Public Works will close the dock to the public and make “its use limited to special events and emergency police, Coast Guard and fire operations only beginning July 11.”

Crap.

Flying high today

Volcanoblastart EVENT
Circo Osorio
Ever spent a resentful, hung-over day wishing you could just disappear â€" maybe run off and join the circus? Starting Friday, marvel at those who dared to live that dream. Hide your kiddies, or bring them! The circus is in town â€" the Circo Osorio, that is. All the bells and whistles one expects from a circus will be out in full force: funny clowns (coulrophobics should stay home), wire-walkers, death-defying trapeze artists, mesmerizing jugglers, and an eccentric ringmaster. It’s all wrapped around a European-style one-ring show. â€" Brad Allen
[B&I Shopping Center, July 11-14, 6 and 8 p.m., 80th and South Tacoma Way, Lakewood, 253.584.2056]

STAGE
Peter Pan
Capital Playhouse is staging its version of Peter Pan this weekend only. Something of note for this show is that Flying by Foy, the company best known for bringing theatrical flying to Broadway in 1950, will be doing the stage magic for the production so Peter, Wendy, John, Michael â€" and even Liza â€" will float magically across the stage to Never Never Land in ways generally left to the imagination during performances at local theaters. â€" Steve Dunkelberger
[Capital Playhouse, 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Sunday, also 2 p.m. Sunday, $10-$15, South Puget Sound Community College’s KJM Center for the Arts, 2011 Mottman Road, Olympia, 360.943.2744, www.capitalplayhouse.com]

ROCK
Kids of Widney High
Widney High is a special education high school in Los Angeles for developmentally disabled kids. Since the creation of a songwriting class in the late ’80s, the Kids of Widney High have been charming the world with their rock and roll offerings â€" which include endearingly genuine tracks like “Let’s Get Busy,” “I Make My Teachers Mad,” “Doctor Doctor,” “Pretty Girls,” “Insects,” and a fittingly tweaked and retooled cover of Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.”  If you know what’s good for you, you’ll check out what the Kids of Widney High have to offer. It’s a powerful and entertaining package, to say the least. â€" Matt Driscoll
[Capitol Theater, 8:30 p.m., all ages, no cover, 206 Fifth Ave. S.E., Olympia, 360.754.5378]

METAL
Lurid
Apparently I’m not the only one who still listens to vintage metal as Tacoma’s own Lurid resurrects the nasty guitar licks of Sabbath, Maiden, and Priest while updating its sound for a new generation. Sporting a shaved head, baggy jeans and black T-shirts, vocalist Tony Dodge looks like your typical modern metal front man but unlike some metal contemporaries, this band actually has a singer who can sing and does not solely relay on speed and volume. â€" Tony Engelhart
[Hell’s Kitchen, with Negative 7, Focuspoint, and Angelo Fawcett, 9 p.m., $5, 3829 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 253.759.6003]

Spinning San Kazakgascar

MATT DRISCOLL: GREETINGS FROM BEAUTIFUL SAN KAZAKGASCAR >>>

The crap pile of promotional CDs I receive here at the Weekly Volcano was pretty dry this week, believe it or not. The pickins were slim, and I was forced out on a limb I would usually avoid. I was pushed into San Kazakgascar, and I believe I’ve still got some of it on me.

San Kazakgascar, if you’ll allow you’re mind to bend for a moment, is a “hypothetical nation state riding a wave of newfound optimism following World War III.”  Can you dig it?

Check out if I did here.

The Tacoma Files: Shawn McManus

DANIEL BLUE: MEET SHAWN MCMANUS >>>

Tacomafilesshawnmcmanus Tacomafilesart Shawn McManus knows more than you do.  The son of NASA parents has explained more complex mechanical and theoretical concepts to me than I learned in all of high school.

For a time he was a barista at the Black Water Café but more recently he has been repairing espresso machines and working as a master puller at Satellite Coffee, which makes his dad nostalgic.  Rocket science is an interesting metaphor for the construction of a latte or such magic.  Starbucks robot shot pullers can't touch Shawn's science.

An original member of scooter club T.A.C.T (Tacoma Alternative Community Transport), Shawn owns a vintage Honda Passport that is as yellow as his afro and as pretty as his cappuccino foam art.

Shawn's knowledge of the universe has come in extremely handy on multiple occasions, his enthusiasm for motor sports and coffee are unparalleled in the grand scheme of our cities destiny.  Ask him about anything. He knows.

Kiss my grits

JENNIFER JOHNSON: WAKE UP! >>>

The Pegasus Restaurant & Lounge is a throwback to the good old diner days when Flo drawled out "Kiss my grits" and a cup of coffee was less than dollar. The Pegasus is a bit off the beaten path down in the industrial part of Tacoma on East Puyallup Avenue.

Open for every meal every day, Pegasus hooks the Weekly Volcano on its no frills breakfasts. It'¢s down-home, salt of the earth food. Something a grown man could eat and have fuel enough for a full day's work. We're talking steak and eggs, hearty omelets, stacks of steaming flap jacks, slabs of tasty salty grilled ham.

You won't find an espresso machine or 12-grain tangerine muffin here, but after a Pegasus sausage breakfast sandwich that makes McDonald's version cry in a corner in shame, you'll agree the grilled English muffin with a fried egg and a real sausage patty with a plate of crispy hash browns for $4.95 is a superb way to get you going.
