Followed sign to tasty tacos

JAKE DE PAUL: TIM KNOWS >>>

Lobster Shop halibut tacos A sunny day calls for lunch along Ruston Way. Packed parking lots proved it today.

I find its easy to pull into Harbor Lights, The Ram, C. I. Shenanigan’s, Katie Downs and even Duke’s as my jalopy hits this grouping first. The Pluto of Ruston Way restaurants, The Lobster Shop, sits waaaaay down the road by itself. Out of site, and unless I'm with grandma, most likely out of mind â€" which is a shame due to its excellent dishes.

Today it was impossible to keep The Lobster Shop out of mind. Tim, the restaurant’s janitor, stood a few yards before the first grouping with a sign that read, “Lunch at The Lobster Shop 1 Mile Ahead.”

So I drove the extra mile. Good call.

My professional server pointed at the halibut soft taco with a smile. “This is the one,” he said.

It was.

I recommend the charbroiled Alaskan halibut wrapped in a flour tortilla with cilantro, slaw, juicy red peppers and slathered in ubiquitous avocado sauce, sliced into two tall towers and conquered with tortilla chip flags ($11.99). The peppers are front and center in taste. The halibut was moist rather than huge, dry chunks. A cup of zesty salsa rode shotgun. Crisp, favorable fries anchored half the plate.

The next time you find yourself drawn to Ruston Way on a sunny day, give Tim a wave and follow his lead.

Re:Fresh Fridays at The Royal

JOSE S. GUTIERREZ JR.: WHAT IS A DJ? >>>

Having been a DJ since I was 6 years old has been a blessing and a challenge. I grew up spinning (actually “scratching”) on my mother’s Technic turntable â€" yeah, just one! So, recently I have been asked by cats interested in the art and culture of the DJ, “What is a DJ?” There are many answers to that question, but here is what I suggested a novice do to earn an authentic answer.

I felt rather than just having the novice follow me, I would recommend that he/she visit a successful night at a club where a dope and accomplished DJ could be studied. I recommended that the novice visit The Royal Lounge in Olympia on Re:Fresh Fridays where, The 25360 DJ of The Year, DJ Drastik would be. There were many DJs I could have recommended … I chose to forward the novice to visit Drastik because he is a rarity in that he has excellent programming (music selection), he is a personality (he interacts with the crowd/audience), he is enthusiastic (he has a good time doing his thang-thang on the 1s and 2s) and he is an original, genuine party rocker! This is rare … most so-called DJs I have encountered are content to be followers and biters of other DJs, and few are focused on pushing the art and culture into new creative realms. Drastik does this with his attitude alone.

Delhi 2 Dublin

TONY ENGELHART: 2 LEGIT TO QUIT >>>

Delhi 2 Dublin A bit like Deep Forest minus the pigmies, Delhi 2 Dublin mixes an array of genres to create their unique sound. Included in their repertoire are dub, house, reggae, East India, and of course, Celtic. The five members play with obscure instruments like tabla, dhol, and electric sitar, but also include fiddle and guitar. Mixing organic sounds with synthetic beats, the Vancouver, B.C., quintet are slightly danceable and definitely trance-able. Their self-titled 2007 debut has garnered positive press, and the word of mouth about D2D has put them at the forefront of the world music scene. The disc was remixed by the band members in 2008 and involves more bass in your face and extra high octane energy.

Tonight, Delhi 2 Dublin will play Malarkey's in Tacoma.

Girl Trouble tonight at The New Frontier

MATT DRISCOLL: 25 YEARS OF BON, KURT, DALE AND KAHUNA >>>

GT Poster Ah, gawd! Another Girl Trouble article? Another Girl Trouble anniversary? The regularity with which I’ve written stories such as this prove two undeniable facts.

Number one: Girl Trouble â€" the iconic, quirky, punk band that’s about as Tacoma as Tacoma gets â€" has left an indelible and important mark on this gritty city of ours. People have memories built around this band â€" even memories of things that never actually happened. (That goes out to you, guy who claims they’ve played Clapton’s “Cocaine.”) Girl Trouble represents an innocent part of our past and a resilient and rough knuckled part of our fabric as a town. In more ways than one, Girl Trouble IS Tacoma.

Number two: I’m getting fucking old and the years are going by too fucking fast.

But it’s true. Tonight Girl Trouble â€" that is, mouthpiece and shirtless man candy Kurt Kendall, the guitarist known as Kahuna, bassist Dale Phillips and the band’s glue, drummer Bon Von Wheelie â€" will be celebrating 25 years of action at the New Frontier Lounge.
