Drinks are back at 1022 South

NATASHA GORBACHEV: 1022 SOUTH SOFT OPENING >>>

Chris-Langston You really know that times have changed in this city when you're in a room on Tacoma's Hilltop that's packed with people who are full of happiness.

Although it sounds wicked cliché, that's really the best way I can describe last night's soft opening of 1022 South (the former Monsoon Room).

Delightful memories rushed back as I took the fateful turn onto J Street for what I knew would be a good time.

Like so many others, I've dearly missed the social network of former Moo Roo regulars and employees, and I must also admit that I've missed the one-of-a-kind cocktail creations from bartender Chris Langston. He's running the joint, and quite happy to be home. He and Corey Lund, who is also helping out, created the menu (which even includes a Nietszche quote: Awesome).

Donning the same jacket that I would wear when my gal pals and I would take over the Moo Roo, I was delighted to find the same people that I loved running into at this happening Hilltop location.

T-Town celebrities were everywhere: sweet pea, Chesty Meow, Callie, DJ Big Chuck, The Mayor of Hilltop, Gregarious, Margauxlegs, EJ, the Naccarato brohamptons, J. Lock, Hammer, Jada-Moon, Heath, Melissa, Jaime Kay Newton, Oliver and oh gawd, I know there are so many others that I'm forgetting.

Two individuals who were most rightfully excited about 1022 were Denise and Michelle, the owners of the Tempest Lounge. They're so happy to have this neighboring bar back on the Hill.

1022 is owned by Neil Harris, the same bro who brought us The New Frontier Lounge. He and his crew have remodeled what we former regulars affectionately referred to as the little shoebox. The space now includes book shelves with all kinds of paperback and hard cover bliss, a long coat rack (thank you!), a vintage piano, a beautiful bar, industrial lighting that you've seen at places including the Pacific Grill and the Top of Tacoma, and the same intimate setting that you'll recall from this space's former days.

I was also happy to find that you can still experience highly individualistic cocktails. To me, the hit of the night was the feisty and spicy Garden of Forking Paths: El Jimador Tequila, mint, lime, cilantro and jalapeno, $9. Two other hits included the refreshing Sorrows of Empire: St. Germain, grapefruit and Barbados Rum, $10; and Paradise Lost: gin, Pimm's No. 1, fresh apple and lemon, $7. As for eats, you'll find pretzels and mustard, garlic sesame sticks and wasabi peas and Amy's Organic microwavable meals.

Most everyone in the house was feeling the same thing last night, and this is what I kept hearing everyone say: It's good to have this bar back because it's necessary for the Hilltop, and for all of the fun friends who have, and always will love this location so.

Please check out 1022 soon and let its intimate arms wrap around you.

McCabe's did a bad thing

NEWS TEAM: AT LEAST WE CAN PRE-FUNC THERE BEFORE JONAS BROS. SHOW >>>

We just received this release from the Washington State Liquor Control Board. McCabe's American Music Cafe is back in the news.

OLYMPIA â€"McCabe’s American Music Cafe in Tacoma was cited for alcohol violations following a joint undercover operation conducted on March 21 by the Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB) and the Tacoma Police Department. McCabe’s was cited for three counts of allowing an apparently intoxicated person to possess/consume alcohol. The 30-day suspension is considered an aggravated penalty. McCabe’s also received a written warning for disorderly conduct by an employee of the liquor licensed establishment.

New Thursday night music series

MICHAEL SWAN: ON THE HOUSE THURSDAYS >>>

"The Volcano goes out on Thursdays, why don't you?" asks Doyle's Public House booking agent Jesse Turcotte.

Snug.

Doyle's and the Weekly Volcano present "On The House Thursdays," an early, two-hour music set by local musicians. Every Thursday from 7-9 p.m. musicians will present an intimate, low-key show without a doorman collecting money.

The series kicks off this Thursday with the electric jazz and funk musical styling of guitarist Colby Sander.

The remaining April schedule:

April 9: Romeos un-plugged (acoustic country Americana pop duo)
April 16: Motopony, Daniel Blue solo with Greenfield opening (acoustic psychedelic pop)
April 23: Vicci Martinez (solo acoustic)
April 30: Josh Hegg and Jim Char (gypsy guitar duo)

All shows will be followed by DJ Platelunch from Maui, who will spin a musical segue back to the roots.

25 pounds to freedom

CHUCK DULA: THE PLATEAU >>>

Chuck Dula Fat Editor's Note: As you may recall Weekly Volcano scribe Chuck Dula struck a deal with a bisexual female friend of his. If he can lose 25 pounds by May 1, then said friend - and another female to be determined later - will have a three-way with Mr. Dula. That's what I call inspiration. Chuck will be chronicling his weight loss efforts every Tuesday here on Spew. Below you'll find the latest installment in Chuck's quest to be less fat and have sex with two women at the same time. Enjoy.

Beginning Weight: 180

There comes a time in every man’s life when they reach a threshold. This is a place where you either quit or you suck it up and power through the bullshit. I am at this point. I am running out of ideas while at the same time... running. I have completely plateaued and my body doesn’t want to lose any more weight. I have noticed that meth-heads tend to be on the slim side. Idea, possibly? But I like having my sanity and sleeping- way too much to go down that road. Tomorrow will mark the beginning of the last quarter of my weight loss timeline. I've lost 60% of the weight that I need to lose, and the last 40% of the weight might come off in an unhealthy fashion (like Indian sweat lodge, eating nothing, or doing laps between Portland and Seattle on my bicycle). I am beginning to believe that the joke will be on me. When I finally get down to 170 and confront the two females about “Fantasy-time” they might find it odd that I'm being held up by two friends because I'm too weak to stand.

Ending weight: 180
