Worthy free show tomorrow

MATT DRISCOLL: GABY MORENO PLAYS DOYLE'S TOMORROW >>>

Better-Living-article-6_4 How’d you learn to speak English? Probably the usual, American boring way, huh? Your parents probably repeated words like potty, diaper and teddy bear over and over and over â€" and eventually you caught on. One day you put the bear on the potty and said something remarkable like “Bear potty!” and you’re parents had never been prouder. Well, not to make you feel average, but Gaby Moreno â€" originally from Guatemala â€"learned to speak English by taking in the timeless blues of luminaries like BB King and Robert Johnson.

If you don’t already feel a little inadequate, perhaps this is the time to mention that Moreno also plays a mean axe, and since moving to L.A. in 2001 to attend The Musician’s Institute, Moreno’s one-of-a-kind songwriting and captivating presence have had her on the fast track to, well, whatever it is that musicians strive for in the age of the Internet. (The cover of the Rolling Stone is sooo outdated, no?)

Check out Moreno and Tacoma’s Vicci Martinez tomorrow night at Doyle’s in what can only be considered a perfect pairing.

Wine Wednesday at Upper Crust

JENNIFER JOHNSON: ANOTHER REASON TO LOVE UPPER CRUST BISTRO >>>

Upper Crust Bistro is a casual, eclectic Tacoma neighborhood destination spot â€" a bakery, pizzeria, wine bar, coffee shop and bistro rolled into one.

On a recent visit, I discovered their Wine Wednesdays, a weekly opportunity to re-dedicate a love of vino. This mid week wine worshipping waives the usual restaurant mark-up; all bottles are sold at retail price (huge savings). It’s a guilt-free way to try that spendy wine you’ve longed for.

Grab a few bottles for the wine rack or upcoming patio dinner parties, also at retail price.

More warm weather looms; take a look at white wine selection and stock up.

The small restaurant enjoys full seats much of the time due almost entirely to the cultish frequency that repeat customers drop by for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Items made from scratch using organic products and hormone free meats populate the menu with a strong focus on ingredient quality and freshness.

Ladyfest comes to T-town

PAUL SCHRAG: IT STARTED IN OLYMPIA, TOURED THE WORLD, AND NOW IT'S COMING TO TACOMA >>>

Volcano-cover-article-6_4 OK, Ladies. Oh, and gentlemen. You’re invited … no, you’re strongly encouraged to head to Sanford & Son this Saturday for a celebration of one of Tacoma’s defining features â€" amazing, motivated, strong women. Yes, Tacoma, Ladyfest is coming, and you better be going.

Tacoma is flush with powerful women. Look behind the scenes. See who’s making things move. See who’s building, see who’s healing, see who’s patching, see who’s creating, and note who’s doin’ it and doin’ it and doin’ it well. Forgive me for polarizing, but in Tacoma, women are killing it.

ANNOUNCER: THERE'S TASTY GREEK FOOD WITH BOOZE IN PUYALLUP >>>

Rest-review-6_4 Originally the location housed America’s only Mr. Greek, a Toronto-based restaurant franchise that had ventured to Puyallup of all places. Now named My Greek Mediterranean Grill, it appears nothing was changed beyond the name and a few menu items. The interior décor still mirrors online pictures of other Mr. Greek restaurants. Unlike many of the smaller family-owned Greek eateries the boys have visited, this new My Greek lacks the typical clutter of mismatched bric-a-brac and climbing houseplants. Instead the large space has a slick modern feel.

Weekly Volcano editorial

MATT DRISCOLL: HAD TOO MUCH TO DRINK (SMOKE) LAST NIGHT >>>

You didn’t think I’d be able to resist, did you? You didn’t think I’d show rarely flashed self-control?

Well, if you did, bubba, prepare to be disappointed.

As I’m sure you’ve caught wind of by now, a 17-year-old Peninsula High School student made waves earlier this week â€" lighting up a J as part of a presentation he was giving in the schools performance hall about why he believes marijuana should be legalized. Apparently, about 150 students and teachers were present, and after smoking said joint in front of all of them, the student ate the charred remains.

Of course, he was then arrested and sent to Remann Hall. This is what happens when high school students toke up in the middle of school â€" whether they’re trying to make a point or not.

For this week’s Volcano editorial, I weighed in on Peninsula High’s new pot proponent.

Sink or swim?

PAUL SCHRAG: FELONS FACE A HOST OF BARRIERS WITH LITTLE SUPPORT >>>

News-to-us-article-6_4 Sometimes things just don’t make sense. Take, for example, the way we treat felons re-emerging into society. They don’t get much help. Thanks to a few recent bits of legislation, they get some education in hopes of determining whether or not they’re viable for training to take their place in the local workforce. Recent legislation has provided vouchers so some prisoners can pay rent for three months. Some of them. But more often than not, they’re given a little cash, their belongings, and a pat on the ass. It’s not pretty, and the effects are felt strongly in every community.

At a recent Tacoma City Council study session, State Sen, Mike Carrell (R-28th) offered some soothing statistics that dispelled, at least for now, the perception that Pierce County inherits more than its fair share of former felons. It’s a common perception that Pierce County has become a dumping ground for felons, who frequently end up living on the streets and frequently end up returning to a life of crime, draining public resources and generally mucking things up. According to some preliminary research, it looks like Pierce County is no longer a dumping ground. Something to be soothed about, sure.

But there’s a bigger problem, and it starts with thinking about felons as refuse, numbers, burdens, etc. Felons are people, and our perception of what kind of people they are, and what kind of treatment they deserve once they have paid their debt to society, needs to change.

Talking with Carrell made that clear. Read what he said here.
