Top Heavy Crush terminated

BOBBLE TIKI: TACOMA'S THC PLAYS ONE LAST SHOW TONIGHT >>>

Top Heavy Crush Oh dear lord! The pain. The empty feeling. The loss of purpose.

It’s almost too much to take.

No, Bobble Tiki isn’t talking about recent life around Weekly Volcano World Headquarters â€" though much of the above certainly applies. Rather, Bobble Tiki is talking about the band known as Top Heavy Crush â€" a T-town fixture for the last five years â€" who recently announced they’ll be playing their final show tonight at Hell’s Kitchen.

Say it aint so!

Let’s put on a show!

STEVE DUNKELBERGER: TACOMA LITTLE THEATRE LOOKS AT THE BUDDY HOLLY LEGEND >>>

I have to say that Tacoma Little Theatre’s production of The Buddy Holly Story well exceeded my expectations and even got me laughing and smiling from time to time. At the center of why the show worked is the “Let’s put on a show” sort of feel it had at the community theater.

Director Brett Carr takes the show to a high level by using the theater’s revolving stage as a transition device as the show flows from one scene to the next. The stage becomes a recording studio or Holly’s house with a flick of a few switches and a few seconds of on-stage rotating of the sets.

Read my full review here.

[Tacoma Little Theatre, through June 28, 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, $18-$22, 210 N. I St., Tacoma, 253.272.2281]

Lovely Alice

ALEC CLAYTON: RON HINSON IN WONDERLAND >>>

Visual-edge-article-6_11 It’s been four years since I last reviewed Ron Hinson. At that time he was showing a series of paintings based on Aesop’s Fables â€" children’s book illustrations elevated to fine art with wit and a fine eye for color and design. What he did for Aesop then he’s now done for Alice in Wonderland, and you can see these delightful paintings at Childhood’s End in Olympia.

Read my full review here.

[Childhood’s End Gallery, Ron Hinson, through July 12, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, 222 Fourth Ave. W, downtown Olympia, 360.943.3724]

STEVE DUNKELBERGER: THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO IN LAKEWOOD >>>

Lakewood-Playhouse-612 Lakewood Playhouse hosted a one-night only evening of radio, tasty finger foods, and fine wines last night as a way to celebrate the Golden Age of Radio with adaptations of the radio plays The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca.

The one-time event was part of the Lakewood Playhouse’s 70th Anniversary celebration.

Lakewood Playhouse Production Manager James Venturini not only directed the show but played the role of the hard-boiled detective in the Maltese show. He nailed it.

Lakewood Players produce worthy radio stage shows. The next radio show will be Bram Stoker's Dracula for Halloween. Plan for it now.

Night Moves

STEVE DUNKELBERGER: SNAPPED THIS LAST NIGHT AT HELL’S KITCHEN >>>

Mephitis Members of the Tacoma-based Mephitis banged their heads at Hell's Kitchen to a crowd that can best be described at small but dedicated to the cause. According to their hideous Myspace page, they'll be back at the Kitchen June 15.
