John Lydon and PiL to play Showbox

FUTURE THINGS ARE COMING >>>

Remember in 2004 when - to the dismay of aging punk fans (most of whom are apparently sad, married, balding taxidermists with only their deep love of gutting Bambis to remind them of happier, more anarchic dances with the Sex Pistols) - a British TV company announced that John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) had agreed to appear in the reality show "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" He lasted 11 days to finish in eighth place. Bobble Tiki remembers thinking the line between true authentic raw art and commercial commodity might never actually have existed. Thank you.

Anyway, Public Image Limited - the rock/dance/folk/ballet/pop/dub band Lydon formed in 1978 - will perform at the Showbox at the Market Tuesday, April 20, AEG announced.

Public Image Limited - Lydon (vocals), Lu Edmonds (guitar), Bruce Smith (drums) and Scott Firth (bass) -earned critical and public acclaim for their concerts in December 2009, with many British media outlets championing them as the shows of the year.

This year sees the 30th anniversary of the band's first U.S. tour and also their U.S TV debut on American Bandstand, where Lydon invited the audience onstage to dance with the band.

Tickets for the Seattle show are $39.50 at Ticketmaster, or $45 at the door. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 5 at 10 a.m.

Weekend of a 1000 composers

WELL, MAYBE NOT A 1,000 BUT CERTAINLY A LOT >>>

Forget less is more. As far as we're concerned, more is more - which is why the more composers the better.

Confused?

It's simple: The University of Puget Sound will be hosting classical music composers from around the world (OK, our nation plus Canada) Friday and Saturday as part of the Society of Composers 2010 Region VIII Conference — and it includes free concerts for the public.

Yup, highlighting the conference will be seven concerts - free and open to the public - that showcase the diverse work of the attending composers. According to conference host Robert Hutchinson from the UPS School of Music, the concerts will lean toward modern classical music, also known as Western art music or contemporary music.

"Some music is very accessible, borrowing harmonies and rhythms from pop music, whereas other pieces will be dissonant and challenging," Hutchinson states in a press release.

Hutchinson's own work, Jeux d'Enfants for orchestra, will have its premier performance in a new version for band.

The event will also include a lecture by guest composer Carter Pann titled, "The Confidence to Be a Tonalist." No doubt that lecture will tonally rock.

Details for the free performances:

Friday, March 5

10 a.m.: Chamber Music Concert 1, Schneebeck Concert Hall

1:30 p.m.: Percussion Ensemble and Electro-Acoustic Concert

3 p.m.: Carter Pann's Lecture, Music Room L6

7:30 p.m.: Symphony Orchestra, Schneebeck Concert Hall

Saturday, March 6

9 a.m.: Chamber Music Concert 2, Schneebeck Concert Hall

11 a.m.: Voice and Choral Concert, Schneebeck Concert Hall

2 p.m.: Brave New Works String Quartet Concert, Schneebeck Concert Hall

7:30 p.m.: Wind Ensemble, Schneebeck Concert Hall

Butter. Milk. Cream. Buttermilk. Saturday.

Aimee Machiels

SHOULD BE A MAGICAL NIGHT ON SIXTH AVENUE >>>

If Israel is the land of milk and honey, maybe Northern India is just the land of milk. Butter, milk, cream, and buttermilk are mainstays of northern Indian cuisine.

Butter. Milk. Cream. Buttermilk.

Are those not the absolute best things in life?

So it's not surprising that Bombay Bistro's "Northern Indian Classical Dance and Dinner" Saturday night will be overflowing with those creamy, buttery dishes. Oh sure, a few other Indian dishes such as tandoori will be in the house tomorrow night, but expect northern India staples such as stuffed "naan" and "parantha" breads to land on your plate, too.

Bombay Bistro will aim this narrow culinary scope toward its buffet line for $25 a person, which translates into multiple return trips for buttery, creamy goodness.

You'll notice that I wrote "Classical Dance" two graphs earlier. Yes, the night will feature two performances by ... hula dancer Aimee Machiels. You read that right. Machiels was born and raised on the island of O'ahu.

That's fantastic!

Well, all signs indicate than Machiels will perform Classical Odissi Dance - a dance she's studied intensively - instead of the hula, but I'm praying she breaks out the grass skirt. Hula dancing is another one of those best things in life.

Reserve your spot at 253.761.9999.

Get to know Psychostick Thursday

Psychostick coming to Hell's Kitchen May 14.

WARM UP FOR MAY 14 IN TACOMA >>>

As I broke worldwide early this month, Nashville Pussy is headed to Hell's Kitchen May 14 with Green Jelly and Psychostick in tow. Tickets are $15 at ticketweb.com.

Psychostick drummer Alex Preiss will host a live webcast Thursday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. PST to discuss the tour.

"I like to do webcasts to make a better connection with our fans," says Preiss in a press release. "I get to meet a lot of them on tour, but there are so many that live in places that we haven't been able to get to yet. Sometimes there are lame age restrictions on shows and kids can't get in. So it's for all of them! Come say hi, ask some questions about whatever, or you could just watch. It's important to me that everyone knows that we are accessible."

Slamfest on sale Friday

SMASHING NEWS >>>

Watch people smash things. Smashing things is fun and cathartic. Watching others smash and smash and smash into each other can be equally entertaining and potentially cathartic in a vicarious kind of way. A sold-out crowd watched the Slamfest Demolition Derby at last year's Spring Fair in Puyallup. Afterward, families left the Fairgrounds with smiles, smashing their first together as if they were cars.

Therefore, Spring Fair folks have added Slamfest it to this year's spring shindig — April 17 at 6 p.m. and the large cars April 18 at 2 p.m. Both derbies will feature the oh-so-popular Rollover, Crazy 8 and Demo Derby Heat Races. New this year will be dare devil stunts with extreme automotive acrobats and fire walks.

Because it sold out last year, the Weekly Volcano suggests you purchase your Slamfest tickets when they go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets are $30 for the Golden Derby box seats, $15 for your run-of-the-mill adult seats, $12 for those skipping their studies and $5 from ages 3-5. A special $50 family pack will also be available. All tickets include admission into the Spring Fair.

Did we mention the new sizzling stunts this year?

What's on tap

Electric Minge

MUSICALLY SPEAKING >>>

It's a new week - and a new month, even - and it's a Monday. Some things never change. Cyclical monotony. Here we go again. ...

Say, did you hear Rick Talbert is running for a seat on the Pierce County Council?

Here's a look at what's coming up, musically speaking, in this week's Volcano.

RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW

I promised you last week that I was trying to track down Lino Fernandez of Bandolier to get the scoop on why the band announced prior to last Saturday's show at The New Frontier that it'd be their last in Tacoma, "maybe ever."

Well, Fernandez got back to me, and here's what's up:

"Ann is moving away and Paul (our drummer) is stepping down at the end of March. I'm not totally sure what's gonna happen," wrote Fernandez in a Facebook message. "It may take a long time to solidify another line-up. We're playing a couple more shows in Seattle and after that, who knows."

METAL SANAZ

Later this afternoon I'm expecting a call from Metal Sanaz, who will be hosting a balls-to-the-wall metal show this Friday at Hell's Kitchen with Church of Hate, De-Krep-It, Helles, Under the Red Door, Devils of Loudon and Hellfyre Empyre. Sanaz, of course, has interviewed just about every goatee in the metal business, and holds her own with any head-banger out there - so this could be interesting. Sanaz is likely to leave me in a puddle of man tears, emasculating me beyond recognition, tail between my legs and huddled in a corner.

Or it could go just swimmingly.

Either way we'll be posting the interview here on Spew later this week.

THE COLOFFS

Purveyors of Tacoma garage, the Coloffs are a mystery to many. We'll expose this band - that everyone should know - in Thursday's paper.

ELECTRIC MINGE

At first I thought this was an STD you could pick up in the South Pacific. Later, Rev. Adam McKinney set me straight. Turns out it's a Tacoma college band worth keeping an eye out. McKinney will give readers of Thursday's paper the whole scoop, but here's a taste of what Electric Minge has to offer according to McKinney:

"Electric Minge is a band that revels in the spirit of classic rock, placing an emphasis on solid songwriting over the more common college band tendency for self-conscious and distracting style. It's substantial, is what I mean to say. Good old-fashioned rock ‘n' roll delivered with youthful exuberance. They even sound relaxed, like they've got this shit down."

HONORABLE MENTION

Pioneers West, Loaded for Bear, The Dirty Birds, and Stop the Madness at Hell's Kitchen will all make cameos in this week's Volcano.

The South Sound Blues Association has secured Thursday night at the Happy Days Casino in Lakewood. Every Thursday night, beginning at 7 p.m., local blues musicians will do their best to drag folks away form the card tables to dance. They will perform every Thursday until 10:30 p.m.

  • The Randy Oxford Band, Feb. 11
