Pierce County arts awards set for Thursday

MICHAEL SWAN: ARTS - THE MARGARET K. WAY >>>

Pierce County Arts Commission sent us this reminder:

The 22nd annual presentation of the Margaret K. Williams Arts Awards, sponsored by the Pierce County Arts Commission and the Pierce County Arts & Cultural Services Division, will take place Thursday, Nov.5 at the Tacoma Art Museum. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m.

Awards will be presented in four categories - Arts Education, Excellence in the Arts, Career, and the Jim Smith Award for Support of the Arts.  This year's recipients are David Craig for Excellence, Linda Danforth for the Jim Smith Award, Candi Hall for Arts Education, Barbara Lee Smith for Career and Lynn Di Nino for Excellence.

David W. Craig is a visual artist working out of his Four Winds Studio and Gallery in Eatonville.  Although he is best known for his watercolors, David also works in mixed media, sculpting, acrylics, charcoals, leatherwork and drum making.  He began private art lessons at the age of 9 and continued his passion for painting earning a degree from the Seattle Art Institute.  He recently designed the commemorative coin for the Eatonville Centennial.  His artwork can be seen in shows and galleries in the Western United States and Hawaii.  He also travels with his family throughout the Western states enjoying tribal gatherings, powwows, art shows, horseback riding, camping and fishing.

Linda Danforth is a jewelry artist who, in 2007, started the Jet Artist Cooperative and the Broadway Artist Cooperative, providing much needed affordable workspace and support for artists in Pierce County.  The same year she also founded Tacoma Art Place (TAP), a non-profit volunteer-run art facility which provides the community with affordable art instruction and access to art equipment including easels, sewing machines, kilns, dark room and more for creative pleasure and entrepreneurial endeavors.  In 2009, Linda founded the 253 Collective, a co-op retail gallery that allows artists to sell their works without paying a commission.

Candi Hall is the creator and Director of the D.A.S.H. Center for the Arts, a non-profit center dedicated to broadening the horizons on inner-city youth through the arts.  Candi, a formally trained singer and dancer, has been deeply involved in providing artistic opportunities to underprivileged youth since she was in college. The DASH Center offers young people the opportunity to take classes in many areas, including ballet, jazz and hip-hop, singing, poetry, computer design, graffiti art, yoga and emceeing.  The students also make trips to area theatres, dance companies, musicians and museums.  They also perform plays, enter dance competitions and write and perform songs.  Candi teaches them that they can achieve anything they put their mind, body and sweat into.

Barbara Lee Smith is an internationally recognized contemporary textile artist, teacher and author.  Her richly layered landscapes and seascapes are created using a variety of media and processes.  Works are painted, printed, collaged, fused, stitched and sometimes even melted.  She has combined techniques from the field of crafts, machine embroidery on fabric, with those of fine arts, collage and painting, to create a her own form.  Over the past 40 years, Barbara has participated in solo and group exhibitions around the United States and all over the world.  She has written books and articles for numerous publications, taught workshops and given lectures internationally.  Her works are held in museums, corporate and private collections in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and around the world.

Lynn Di Nino has been a freelance artist, teacher and entrepreneur for over thirty years.  In recent years, she has specialized in concrete sculpture and in collaborative performance art.  Her stylized animal sculptures feature a welded steel skeleton finished with concrete veneer, and may include household objects as body parts. She says "My goal is to capture the essence of the animal through its recognizable silhouette and thereby convey its beauty and global significance with a humor that honors its spirit." She has also become well-known for her spirited performance pieces for such occasions as New Year's Eve, the Glass Roots Festival, and the Fremont Solstice Parade among many others, which engage large groups of people to become part of the art experience.

Erotica, If You Dare

MICHAEL SWAN: HALLOWEEN PARTY AT THE ROBERT DANIEL GALLERY FRIDAY >>>

Erotichalloween Dracula. That intensely sexual, seductively amorous icon of male machismo and magnetism - the hypnotic set of eyes hidden beneath the silk top hat, the broad shoulders and refined neck subtly shrouded beneath the sweeping cape, elegant hands that coax a slow simmer from the blood of his prey, silent footsteps, lingering fingers, full lips that teasingly reveal the orgasmic crescendo of long white teeth hidden behind them.

I have complete confidence my Dracula costume will steal all eyes Saturday night at the Erotic, If You Dare Halloween party at The Robert Daniel Gallery. Although, party organizer T-Dub will try his best to shame me. He will install cages and stripper poles and load them up with hot chicks. Then, he'll adorn the gallery's walls with erotic art. Last, he's invited a dominatrix show from San Francisco, the burlesque troupe Fun Police and a couple of DJs.

Titillated yet? You will once you see the eternal he-hunk Michael Swan.

Poetry Vicissitudes Sunday

MICHAEL SWAN: TAMMY ROBACKER RELEASES BOOK OF POETRY >>>

Viciss-Bee-Front-Cover Quick question for you: What's the poetry scene like in Tacoma?

If you said, "Wait a minute! What poetry scene?" - you're exactly the type of person I'm looking for.

(Unless, I suppose, your idea of poetry is the stuff scrawled on the walls of Honeybuckets.)

Fact is, while it may be small and fledgling, there is a poetry scene in Tacoma - and it's growing.

People like Tammy Robacker - who has written for the Weekly Volcano in the past and has become a force within Tacoma's poetry scene-are making it possible.

And the City of Tacoma is also helping.

Through a funding from the Tacoma Artists Initiative Program (TAIP) and a grant awarded to her from the City of Tacoma and the Tacoma Arts Commission, Robacker is releasing her first book of poetry, The Vicissitudes, this week. Robacker will hold a book release, reading, and signing party Sunday, Oct. 25 at bellaballs art studio (747 S. Fawcett Ave., Suite B, Tacoma). Tacoma Poet Laureate Antonio Edwards Jr. will emcee the event, and fun is expected to be had by all.

Those who need proof of Tacoma's poetry scene need look no further.

Brew Revue: Full Sail Lupulin Fresh Hop Ale

CERVEZA SISTERS: THE TASTY ROAD TO THE TACOMA CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL >>>

The Tacoma Craft Beer Fest will host 43 breweries and 88 beers Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Foss Waterway Seaport in downtown Tacoma. Here is another beer that will be poured at the festival:

Full-Sail

Full Sail Lupulin Fresh Hop Ale
This beer is a veritable hop loverâs delight. Named for those tiny lupulin glands inside hop flowers, they are packed with sticky resins and essential oils that provide bitterness, flavor and aroma. This beer â" which was released mid-September â" is all about hops: itâs wet hopped, kettle hopped, hop back hopped, wet hopped and dry hopped in the fermenter with 135 pounds of hops per 24 barrel batch.

Its tasty, clean and flowery with a super long finish that keeps our mouths watering long after the empty glass. The fresh combo of crystal and cascade hops no doubt work out the citrusy, flowery, clean taste.

Hey stats!: The ABV is 5.8 percent; the IBU is 70.

Yay for the Lupulin gland in every hop flower, bursting with the resin that makes this a new favorite for us!

Brian Redman’s memorial service (band line up)

RON SWARNER: A CELEBRATION OF LIFE THURSDAY AND FRIDAY (UPDATE 5) >>>

A memorial service for Brian Redman will be held Friday, Oct. 2, at Doyle’s Public House in Tacoma’s Stadium District. The services will begin at 5 p.m.

Afterward, at 6 p.m., live bands will rock in his honor and memory in Doyle’s parking lot.

As those who knew Brian can imagine, whittling the bands down to something manageable will be difficult. Everyone wants to perform. Band names and details will follow as the information arrives.

UPDATE: Due to the overwhelming support of the musical community, Jesse Turcotte, booking agent at Doyle's Public House, has no choice but to start the music at 6 p.m. Friday.  The music portion of the memorial will start with acoustic solos and duos from, but not limited to, Daniel Blue, Westerly, Last Chance Romeos, Kyong Kim, and Jeff Angell.  Following that, Doyle's will host short performances on two stages with quick turnaround from, but not limited to, Ockham's Razor, Toughtimes, Blanco Bronco, Goldwing, Pioneers West, Helms Alee, The Revengers, The Fucking Eagles, Zeke, Top Heavy Crush, Glimpse, and members of Dirty Knockers and Left With Nothing.

"It'll start slow and sensitive and end hot and heavy, just like Brian would have wanted," says Turcotte.

There will be a taco truck in the parking lot for late night eats.

Doyle's is also establishing an endowment for music with Greater Tacoma Community Foundation. They are asking for either cash donations directly to this fund or items to be used for the raffle on the day of the event. After funeral expenses are covered all donations will go toward the endowment. All items and checks may be dropped off at Doyle's â€" 208 St. Helens Ave. in Tacoma's Stadium District. Checks may also be mailed to: The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, 950 Pacific Avenue, Suite 1220, Tacoma, WA 98402

Doyle's is asking for a $5 donation at the door. All proceeds will go toward Brian's funeral expenses and endowment fund.

SECOND MEMORIAL ADDED: A second memorial service will take place Thursday, Oct. 1 at the New Frontier Lounge. Zook, 12 Gauge Saint and Mico de Noche will perform.

Downtown Tacoma: Here comes the Firwood

STEPH DEROSA: HERE'S HOPING IT OPENS IN OCTOBER AS PLANNED >>>

Firwood-Rock-Lounge

As much as Hyon Luv Kil would love for me to forget, I will always remember that fateful day of May 16, 2008 when we all watched the Firwood Roadhouse in Fife burn down.  From the moment he learned of the landmark's demise, Luv Kil swore he would do nothing but fight for the return of the Firwood.  After considering many locations, the infamous nighttime hot spot has finally found a new home - right in downtown Tacoma.

Shedding the old "Roadhouse" surname, what will soon be occupying Pacific Avenue's old club, The Drake, will be Luv Kil's Firwood Rock Lounge.  Be gone old reputation of female patrons with fake tans, fake boobs, outdated French manicured nails, Katy Perry wannabe haircuts, matching Hot Topic shirts, and knowing no other way to take pictures but by making that dumb "kissy face" pose. Luv Kil promises me that while still catering to his loyal "Roadhouse" crowd, he is setting up shop with the intention of entering the awesomeness of what Tacoma has to offer.  Read: He's welcoming live, local music.

Oh, hell yeah.

He just said those three magic words that my Weekly Volcano-loving heart wants to hear.

As I sat inside the grand, rebuilt, relocated Firwood interior, I felt a dash of coolness being part of something so undeniably needed in this area.  With so many evolving, talented bands in the South Puget Sound, venues for citizens to appreciate local music have become an ever increasing need.  Acoustic engineers have taken over the new Firwood Rock Lounge in order to give the place the best opportunity for exquisite live music.  An elevated stage, three brand new bars (one of them extremely huge), re-built booths, and an entirely cleaned-up kitchen now occupy the once gutted business space.

Neighboring businesses have openly welcomed the new Firwood Rock Lounge to their entertainment-laden block of downtown.

"As long as it's not another Club Juno," says a neighboring business owner.

"This will be the farthest thing from that," states Luv Kil.

Luv Kil is hoping for an opening sometime in October 2009, though the Firwood Rock Lounge still has a few city hoops left to jump through, he says.

If the downtown Tacoma joint turns out to be what Luv Kil describes, expect this place to bear hug Tacoma's live music scene like you've never seen it hugged before.
