Many faces of Murray Morgan tonight

SUZY STUMP: FIND THE MURRAY MORGAN TONIGHT >>>

Murraymorganclaudiariede For most people, laundry is a tedious, time-sucking chore. But for me, it’s a way to evoke the muse. While unloading the dryer one day, I noticed that the lint trap held a rainbow of wonderful colors and textures. My creative spin cycle kicked in and I immediately began to transform the fluff into the Murray Morgan Bridge.

Tonight, The Art Stop/LeRoy Jewelers joins BKB & Company for a juried show of art and contemporary craft celebrating the Murray Morgan Bridge.

Participating artist Claudia Riedener (that’s her bridge above) states in a press release: “Photos and other media depicting the now-closed-to-vehicular-traffic bridge are for sale with a portion of the proceeds donated to Save Our Bridge, a non-profit organization dedicated to preservation of the Tacoma icon.”

Check out animated, sculpted, 3D pictured and photographed views of the bridge by John Carlton, Dean Walsh, Lynn Di Nino, Chip Van Gilder and Riedener.

Who knows, maybe one of them ditched the dry-clean only-threads and created a Maytag Murray Morgan masterpiece, too.

The Tacoma Files: Oliver Doriss

DANIEL BLUE: MEET OLIVER DORISS >>>

Tacomafilesoliverdoriss Tacomafilesart The Artist formerly known as the glassblower Oliver Doriss is currently known as the Viceroy of Hilltop for a reason (somewhere in the background several voices are whispering the word "timeless").

"I was born in Davenport, Iowa, but I'm from Massachusetts," says the local gallery tycoon who purchased a building on 13th and MLK Jr. Way last September, renovated it himself (with the help of some choice friends) and opened the Fulcrum Gallery by December. Doriss has been blowing glass, teaching glassblowing, and rocking the hot shop for longer than I've been doing anything. His work has been featured, praised and sold on both coasts, and despite the gallery he still blows two or three times a week and teaches at the M-Space hot shop downtown.

When he's not wearing the hat of a gallery director or glassblower, you can catch him under the needle as DJ Broam, usually accompanied by a dance floor full of wild sweaty abandon. This innovative artist/businessman hybrid says when he grows up, "I want to get paid to be exactly who I am."

When I grow up, I want to be Oliver Doriss.

A love for Seaweed

MATT DRISCOLL: BANDS PAY TRIBUTE TO TACOMA BAND >>>

Hoursandhours The Engineer Records produced Seaweed tribute album Hours and Hours â€" which boasts 17 tracks from an array of bands and musicians ranging from Kane Hodder to Stephen Brodsky, is typical of a tribute compilation â€" some of shines; some of it, well, doesn't.

While it won't be released to the public until June 24, here at the Weekly Volcano we got our hands on a copy. Check out my review here.

Beach bars are back

BRAD ALLEN: DO WE HAVE A BEACH BAR? >>>

The Atlantic City Weekly claims beach bars are back.

Does Tacoma have a beach bar? Is the Beach Tavern (I don't believe they nabbed that Class H license yet) next to Titlow Beach the closest thing we have?

Kenny, Andre, Camile and the pop press

Volcanoblastart FILM
Kenny
The 2006 film Kenny brings to the surface a subject we normally cringe at: poop and pee. Its eponymous hero installs and cleans public waste receptacles for a living. Almost two hours of excrement- sounds like the perfect vehicle for Adam Sandler's juvenile brand of comedy, right? Kenny actually hails from Australia, and makes its North American premiere at the Grand today. Already having garnered multiple awards and won fans Down Under, Kenny smartly avoids the easy raunchiness of its premise, instead painting an enjoyable and sympathetic picture of a man- and occupation- that society ignores. Read full review here.- Christopher Wood
[The Grand Cinema, 2:30, 4:45, 7:05 and 9:10 p.m., $4.50-$8, 606 Fawcett Ave., Tacoma, 253.593.4474]

CLASSICAL GUITAR
Andre Feriante
If Andre Feriante ever decided to plug in, he would most definitely rival guitar gods such as Michael Schenker, Richie Blackmore and Eddie Van Halen as his nimble fingers move up and down the fretboard with flawless precision. Playing acoustic, Feriante has become one of the most sought after classical composers but doesn't limit himself to any one genre. From jazz to flamenco improvisation, he is a well-rounded artist who adapts well to any style he chooses to tackle. Catch him tonight at the Urban Grace Church.- Tony Engelhart
[Urban Grace, 8 p.m., $22, 902 Market St., Tacoma, 253.272.2184]

FOLK ROCK
Camille Bloom
Edgy, poignant, rough and honest are just a few adjectives one could use to describe Camille Bloom's music. Because her influences range from Shawn Colvin to Pat Benatar, the Seattle-based singer/songwriter has a style that is not genre specific. Her tunes range from heartfelt ballads to balls-out rockers with a PJ Harvey-Ani Difranco vibe, though her style is uniquely Bloom. While she is best known for her high energy shows, her three records are nothing to sneeze at as each one gives you insight into this singer's soul.

Fully endorsed by Gibson guitars, she has upped the ante and is ready to conquer the world one city at a time with her full band, the Recovery, in support of her brand spanking new CD, Ten Thousand Miles. The new disc catches the songstress doing what she does best, performing live.- TE
[Jazzbones, with Ian McFeron Band, Matt Hopper, and The Roman Candles, 8 p.m., all ages, $8, 2803 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 253.396.9169]

INDIE POP
The Newspapers
Producing a medley heavy on indie-pop quirk with dabbles of synthesized funk, the Newspapers are both catchy and creative enough to compete on the same turf that bands like the Shins and Menomena have marked as their own. The Newspapers will play Bob's Java Jive in Tacoma tonight. If you can dig on eccentric indie pop with a funk in its step, the Newspapers are your kind of band. - Matt Driscoll
[Bob's Java Jive, with Tree Roots in the Basement, The Upperhand, Banners and Darren Selector, Friday, June 20, 8 p.m., $5, 2102 S. Tacoma Way, Tacoma, 253.475.9843]

Palliate the pain

BOBBLE TIKI: BREAKFAST WITH BOBBLE TIKI >>>

THE DAILY WORDBreakfasthobnob110607

Palliate \PAL-ee-ayt\, transitive verb:

1. To reduce in violence (said of diseases, etc.); to lessen or abate.
2. To cover by excuses and apologies; to extenuate.
3. To reduce in severity; to make less intense.

USAGE EXAMPLE: Bobble Tiki is no doctor, but if there’s one thing he knows, it’s that there’s nothing like 8 or 9 cans of Bud Ice to palliate the pain of one’s seemingly miserable existence. It works every time.

Naked Tacoma: NSFW

ALEC CLAYTON: PUTTING IT ALL ON THE LINE >>>

Surely you’ve seen the posters by now: Naked Tacoma. 20 participants, 32 breasts, 16 vaginas, four penises, one butt cheek.

Attention grabbing, isn’t it? It’s the opening show of Paul Uhl’s new delight gallery inside Sanford & Son, and it’s the first of three similarly-themed shows planned for the gallery. By the time autumn comes, Tacomans may be sick and tired of naked bodies, or at the very least they might view naked bodies differently.

Uhl’s life partner and business partner, Deborah Page, was responsible for the unique display of the photographs, which are hung on clotheslines and clothes hangers with panties and bras draped between them. “She is responsible for the look and feel of the gallery,” Uhl says.

Check out my full review in Thursday’s Weekly Volcano.

[delight gallery, Naked Tacoma, Wednesday by appointment, Thursday-Friday 1-6 p.m., Saturday 11a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday noon to 5 p.m. through mid July, inside Sanford & Son, 743 Broadway, Tacoma]

I posted a few photos from the show on the second page. They are not safe for work.
