Mephitic stench

BOBBLE TIKI: BREAKFAST WITH BOBBLE TIKI >>>

THE DAILY WORDBreakfast11807

Mephitic \muh-FIT-ik\, adjective:
1. Offensive to the smell; as, mephitic odors.
2. Poisonous; noxious.

USAGE EXAMPLE: As A Rod left the apartment, he couldn’t help but notice his own sweat and mephitic stench. He’d grown accustomed to it, though. When he spent the night at Madonna’s he always left in this manner.

McManus does the market

SUZY STUMP: CHARLIE MCMANUS >>>

Charliemcmanus The Weekly Volcano has proclaimed Chef Charlie McManus of Primo Grill and The Crown Bar as a god many times. Besides owning mad chef skills, he’s a nice guy, too. You can discover both tomorrow at the Tacoma Farmers Market.

McManus will prepare several dishes from local market ingredients during tomorrow’s market in downtown Tacoma.  He’ll prepare fresh grilled peaches over vanilla ice cream.  Sound simple? Yeah, that’s your version.

McManus will fire up the grill beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Local Living Lounge area of the market. Afterward, stay and enjoy the musical stylings of Joshua Cain Band.

The Helio Sequence to play Showcase Tacoma

MATT DRISCOLL: RUMOR CONFIRMED >>>

Theheliosequence In a little over three weeks, the 3rd Annual Showcase Tacoma â€" a City of Tacoma and Metro Parks produced “multi-disciplinary arts experience” â€" will take over Tollefson Plaza and other nooks of Downtown T-town. The festival will take place over two days â€" Friday, Aug. 8 and Saturday, Aug. 9 â€" and will run both days from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Since this year will mark Showcase Tacoma’s third occurrence, and years past have been growing successes, there’s a good chance you already knew this.

But what you may not know is, in addition to musical performances by Kim Archer, Deborah Page, Speaker Speaker, Matt Coughlin, Kareem Kandi and others, Portland’s jaw-dropping duo the Helio Sequence â€" one of the hottest indie bands in all the land â€" will close out Friday night at Showcase Tacoma, playing in Tollefson Plaza from 7-9 p.m. It was a rumor confirmed today by Tacoma Art Administrator Amy McBride.

As with everything at Showcase Tacoma, catching the Helio Sequence will be free.

Mark your calendars now. It just might be the coolest thing to ever happen at Tollefson Plaza.

Music is only a small portion of the art Showcase Tacoma will have to offer. Click here to find out more.

Four stars: The Dark Knight

ROGER EBERT: MOVING THE GENRE INTO DEEPER WATERS >>>

Thedarkknight WARNER BROS. PICTURES

Batman
isn’t a comic book anymore. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is a haunted film that leaps beyond its origins and becomes an engrossing tragedy. It creates characters we come to care about. That’s because of the performances, because of the direction, because of the writing, and because of the superlative technical quality of the entire production. This film, and to a lesser degree Iron Man, redefine the possibilities of the “comic book movie.”

The key performance in the movie is by the late Heath Ledger as the Joker. Will he become the first posthumous Oscar winner since Peter Finch? His Joker draws power from the actual inspiration of the character in the silent classic The Man Who Laughs (1928). His clown’s makeup more sloppy than before, his cackle betraying deep wounds, he seeks revenge for the horrible punishment his father exacted on him when he was a child

Unusual events today

Volcanoblastart_2 ANIMALS
Valentines Performing Pigs
This is where we’re at, America. Valentines Performing Pigs. See them today at Tacoma Wheelock Library. The official event announcement says it all: “You will go hog wild watching these chubby mini pigs doing tricks and incredible athletic feats, including dancing and jumping in the air, playing catch with the audience, running up teeter totters, slam dunking basketballs, and madly roaring across the stage on scooters and skateboards!” â€" Simon Moon
[Wheelock Library, 11 a.m., free, 3722 N.  26th St., Tacoma, 253.591.5666]

LECTURE
Typography
There is nothing more dangerous than e-mail. One click, and that angry, angry letter has disappeared into cyberspace, my friend. And guess where it’s going to reappear? Your boss’s mailbox, or your mother’s or whomever you really needed to have a serious, calm discussion with, a discussion that’s a lot less likely to be calm after they read your e-mail. Stick to pen and paper, and â€" since letters can change history â€" typography. Lance Kagey of Beautiful Angle will discuss how the evolution of typography is woven into the history of world civilization. Come see how much happier life can be when you vent safely in the company of those who understand letters. â€" Suzy Stump
[Tacoma Art Museum, Thursday, July 17, 7 p.m., free, 1701 Pacific Ave., Tacoma, 253.272.4258]

ROCK
Red Elvises
With an energy that is unsurpassed, this Russian quartet combines the ethnic music of their homeland with good ol’ fashion rock ’n’ roll for a sound that is fun and fresh. Think polka music with a vintage Elvis Presley vibe. Adorned in metallic suits, the band is as fun visually as they are musically.

The Red Elvises were formed in 1995 by two Russian political refugees, singer/songwriter Igor Yuzov and bass-balalaika player Oleg Bernov, who initially played together in a Russian folk-rock band called Limpopo. Rumor has it that Yuzov saw Elvis in a dream wearing a red dress, and that is what inspired the name change.  After adding another immigrated Russian, guitarist Zhenya Kolykhaov and American drummer Avi Sills, the band hit the ground running and hasn’t stopped. In between their relentless touring of the U.S. and Europe, they have managed to release 14 discs, the last one being Drinking With Jesus this year. While their recordings are extremely fun, to fully appreciate the Red Elvises is to see them live. â€" Tony Engelhart
[The Swiss Pub, 8 p.m., $8, 1904 S. Jefferson Ave., Tacoma, 253.572.2821]

JAZZ
Lance Buller and Stephanie Porter
No, “Buller and Porter” is not a new cop show on UPN.  Trumpeter Lance Buller and singer Stephanie Porter front a local jazz quartet worthy of producing the love scenes soundtrack on said cop show.  Porter sings like an angel. She can run up and down the scales with the best of those divas on VH1 specials â€" some notes last longer than a cop show car chase.

Buller could stop the chase with one single blast.  He never admits channeling Louis Armstrong, but I bet a C note on it.

And like any good cop show, chemistry rules.  Buller and Porter own audiences. Each audience member feels like it’s his own private show in his own living room. Buller launches jokes, and Porter tosses back zingers.

Tonight’s Law and Order episodes will replay a jillion times on TNT.  Missing Buller and Porter Sunday is just criminal â€" especially outdoors under the stars. â€" Ron Swarner
[Mary Baker Russell Amphitheater, 7 p.m., all ages, no cover, Pacific Lutheran University, Wheeler Street South and Eighth Avenue Court South, Parkland/Tacoma, 253.535.7787]

The Tacoma Files: Carson Churchill

DANIEL BLUE: MEET CARSON CHURCHILL >>>

Tacomafilescarsonchurchi Tacomafilesart_2 Carson Churchill is a young activist. He is passionate about the injustice he sees in the world. He is angry with our immigration laws and the way we treat people who are not Americans on our soil and on theirs.  I have seen him on more than one occasion with a sign in his hand and message on his lips, attempting to make people pay attention to something outside of their own yard.

Carson is a man of good taste and a student at the Tacoma School of the Arts. He has exposed me to film and music alike that is both artful and sophisticated. When I was his age, I had no idea they let people make music unless they planned to play it on the radio.

When Carson went to China with the tips he earned working at the Mad Hat Tea Company's Farmers Market booth, I asked him to bring me back a throwing star. He brought me a fighter pilot helmet instead. I have no idea how he got it out of the country. He is a magic little crafty bastard.

Pictured above at Frost Park in downtown Tacoma, long before the Chalk Challenge was made popular, he knows he is the champion of the fountain.
