Broken Oars could kick our ass

MATT DRISCOLL: BUT THE BAND WILL BE BUSY AT THE SEAFARER TONIGHT >>>

Broken Oars Not long ago, Steph DeRosa, the Weekly Volcano’s resident drunk, asked for suggestions about which bar she should hit next on her dive bar tour. Seafarer’s, located at 3878 Center St. was the suggestion spewed forth by the Weekly Volcano’s original resident drunk, Pappi Swarner. Well, three weeks later, after DeRosa had checked the joint out, and Swarner had said “I told you so,” Seafarer’s shows up on the musical radar. What started two weeks ago with the Plastards and Electrolux show continues in full force this weekend, with Broken Oars along with Wildogz, and C.F.A. It’s the return of music to Seafarer’s, bubba â€" and rock and roll has never had a more Tacoma home. Broken Oars â€" all four members, either individually or as a gang of hellions â€" could absolutely kick every member of the Weekly Volcano staff’s ass. And their punk rock is as legit as it comes. Add Wildogz and Cody Foster’s Army, and you’ve got one hell of a show on your hands.

Battle Hymns at the New Frontier

MATT DRISCOLL: NOT AFRAID OF TACOMA >>>

Battle Hymns Cameron Elliott, the leader, singer, guitarist and driving force behind Battle Hymns, isn’t scared of Tacoma â€" at least not really.

“I’m more afraid I’ll be tempted to don an eye patch and start bossing glass blowers around, or go on a car crushing spree with my monster truck,” says the melancholy, indie rock songsmith â€" like a modern day Tom Petty without the bad haircut â€" when asked whether he was afraid of being jumped or pressured into methamphetamine use when his band plays the New Frontier Lounge tonight.

The Den at urbanXchange

MATT DRISCOLL: CHECK OUT THIS EVENT TONIGHT! >>>

Phil Elverum Holy shit this will be a good show. No joke. As far as indie rock wet dreams go, the four bands (musicians) set to play the newest (and coolest) all-ages venue in Tacoma â€" the Den at urbanXchange â€" are enough to induce an awful lot of stickiness. Forgive the graphic nature of my gushing, but Phil Elverum’s Mount Eerie, Calvin Johnson’s monotone croon, Karl Blau’s folksy exploration and the melodic thrashing of Kusikia (even though they moved to Portland from Tacoma) are more than enough to make blood surge to certain parts of my nether region.

Styx in a casino

RON SWARNER: SWEET MADAME BLUE THEN CRAPS >>>

752px-Styx-1 Tonight, show all your stick-in-the-mud friends that Styx inspires more than just a swell night of drunken karaoke. Seriously, they might think “Come Sail Away,” “The Grand Illusion,” and “Blue Collar Man,” belong in the VFW, but that’s just because they’ve never witnessed ’70s/’80s rockers in the Emerald Queen Casino make like Napoleon Jagger.

Hot chick alert

RON SWARNER: TWO CAR GARAGE COVER SHOOT >>>

Two-Car-Chick-What's-Your-N Matt Driscoll and I are afflicted with a syndrome we call "Poor Devil." Whenever we see someone less fortunate than ourselves  â€" the morbidly obese, Vashon ferry captains, Mrs. Bobble Tiki â€"  we are so overcome with pity that we find ourselves momentarily ruined. If this occurs at a bar, God forbid, we can’t even continue drinking for a few minutes until the bout of Poor Devil has passed.

I mention this because he and I are the Poor Devils right now. We gave up the chance to photograph a hot chick this morning. Yeah, I don't now what we were thinking. Instead, we turned the assignment over to a professional â€" Weekly Volcano photographer J.M. Simpson

Two-Car-Chick-Why-Hello Two-Car-Chick-Hot-Model As you will see by his shots, he nailed it.

The photo shoot was for the album cover for the upcoming split disc, Two Car Garage, that the Fabulous Wailers and the Ventures will release April 10 in celebration of their 50th anniversaries of rockin' Tacoma. Held at Austin's Pro Max at the corner of 56th and South Tacoma Way, Simpson captured Reanna Scott, stage name Fuchsia Foxxx, as she struck pose after pose.

Read more on Two Car Garage in Bobble Tiki's column posted a few week's ago on the Weekly Volcano Web site.

Two-Car-Chick-Hand-Up Two-Car-Chick-On-Set Two-Car-chick-glasses-off Matt, you Poor Devil, I think we need to rethink our priorities.

About last night

RON SWARNER: GOOD TIMES >>>

The-Den-Calvin-1 Last Night the Weekly Volcano dropped by the new Den music venue inside urbanXchange. It was too packed to see the scattered bits of furniture, but we did enjoy the bottomless, trembling baritone of Calvin Johnson (known for his part in the band Beat Happening, as founder of the label K Records and as leading man in Dub Narcotic Sound System) and the messy variety of noise and effects that is Mt. Eerie.

Seafarer's-Cody-Foster Seafarer's-Broken-Oars After a quick beer at The Harmon, we joined the masses at Seafarer's Sports Bar & Grill for the punk rock assault of C.F.A. and the Broken Oars. The back room was alive and deafening.

West-End-Pub-2 The night ended with karaoke dancing at the West End Pub & Grill.

Bartender beat

NATASHA GORBACHEV: BEHIND DOYLE'S BAR >>>

Jesse-Turcotte Word on the street and text messages have confirmed that once the legendary Brian Redman leaves his bartending post after Feb. 13 (such a sad day) at Doyle's Public House for sunny-San-Diego days that he'll be succeeded by another T-Town dreamboat and stellar bartender, Jesse Turcotte.

Turcotte has been crazy busy lately, between bartending gigs at Jazzbones, The New Frontier and Duke's, while performing with his latest band, Higher Vibes. This move to Doyle's will give him a chance to consolidate. He'll hold on to one shift at Jazzbones, and the rest of his time will be spent at Doyle's. As one of the sweetest and most hard-working peas, Turcotte will be such a nice addition to the Doyle's family.

And, I hope you'll all be sure to drop into Doyle's on Friday the 13th to send our beloved Brian Redman off in style.
