South (Tacoma) of the border

Rest-review-article-4_2 ANNOUNCER: The month of April is special to the boys. Not for sports reasons, but it reminds them of their boisterous youth and of spring break. Jake fondly recalls a spring break spent in TJ (Tijuana, Mexico, if you don’t know) and wonderful, exotic foods and flavors that he tried. Jason barely remembers the trip. They agree that the way to tell if a Mexican restaurant is good is by the amount of English on the menu. Less is better. Taqueria La Carreta â€" a mostly authentic Mexican restaurant â€" has opened in the building on South Tacoma Way that once housed a Korean joint that made incredible humbow. La Carreta’s large point-at-the-picture menus have hardly any English. Whether there is any truth to the boys’ lunacy, you’ll have to visit and see for yourself.

Read what the boys thought of the joint on the Weekly Volcano Web site.

PAUL SCHRAG: STATE LEVEL CUTS ARE BAD >>>

News-to-us-article-4_2 And you thought the county budget situation was bad.

If Senate Democrats’ budget proposal is any indication, the impacts of proposed cuts at the state level will be deep and widespread â€" felt heavily in education at all levels, in social services, and state employment. What’s more concerning, however, is how cuts by the state will be felt on the local level.

The recently unveiled 2009-2011 budget recommendations would use $3 billion in federal stimulus money, part of Washington’s Rainy Day savings, reallocation of some capital project funds, and a substantial wage freeze for state and public school employees. After all that, they only have to cut an estimated $3.85 billion from various state-funded programs. Under the Senate Dems’ plan, about 7,000 state and public school jobs would be cut, college enrollment would be cut by 10,500, as well as state-run Basic Health funding, and several other state-funded health care programs, including care for state employees. The Basic Health Plan, which serves low-income families, would be cut by $250 million, reducing the number of people covered from 106,000 to 60,000. Funding for public schools would be cut by $1.2 billion.

Ouch.

Dating in the frozen food aisle

KEN SWARNER: NICE MELONS! >>>

Dish-feature-article-4_2 Does anyone date in the grocery store aisles anymore? Did anyone beyond the trashy TV shows EVER do this?

I met my wife in high school so I admit I haven’t tried dating in the frozen food aisle. I am not exactly sure how one would do this with any relative expectation of success. I know I’d likely miss the signs if a woman tried to pick me up.

WOMAN: Hey there handsome (shut up, this is my fantasy).

ME: Huh?

WOMAN: Nice cheese balls.

ME: Huh?

Those thinking about finding a date in a supermarket should also consider the scene as much as the message. Where you shop in the South Sound may be as important as what’s in a hot chick’s cart. Consider my list on the Weekly Volcano Web site before you grab a cart.

Weekly Volcano editorial

MATT DRISCOLL: HAD TOO MUCH TO THINK LAST NIGHT >>>

Last weekend the family and I headed down to the fabled city of Portland â€" quite possibly the “coolest” place on earth. There was plenty of time to revel in amazement at Portland’s public transportation system, and even a little left over to immerse myself in some OPB back in the hotel room.

The trip also provided me with an opportunity to do what so many other have already done â€" compare the City of Roses with my own, beloved City of Destiny.

While Portland certainly has a lot going for it, and Tacoma is, well, Tacoma - this week’s editorial serves as a reminder that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

McCoy’s Tavern

STEPH DEROSA: BAR EXAM >>>

Bar-Exam-spew-42 I’m pretty sure Charlie the bartender couldn’t have given a heaping, steamy shit about us, except we were accompanied by Sam, McCoy’s seven-foot bohemian doorman. There really is no ignoring Sam, so we got preferential PBR treatment from Charlie â€" but only after he did a shot behind the bar. Hell, the guy didn’t even try and hide the shot. Bandito gave him a “10” on his form.

Read what grade I gave McCoy's Tavern on the Weekly Volcano Web site.
